Prophet Mirror's POV
The mist hung heavy as Prophet Mirror crouched behind a boulder, his hawk, Shadowwing, circling silently above. The hearing had ended, but Kaelonâs smirk lingered in his mind, that black stone pulsing in his grip like a heartbeat. It wasnât just power he wantedâit was control. Prophetâs juju sharpened his ears, catching Kaelonâs low hiss near the eastern gate: âThe boyâs power is too strong to waste. We take him tonightâforce it out before Wolo hides him. And Aanyaâsheâs tied to him through Old Brass, through that orphanage. If she meddles, weâll use her too.â
A scarred minion nodded, chains glinting in his hands. âBound, heâs nothing.â
Prophetâs chest tightened. Zuri, Aanya, Kenteâall kids from Old Brass, tangled in something bigger than them. He whispered to Shadowwing, âFind Wolo. Hurry.â The hawk vanished into the blue-lit night.
Miss Wolo's POV
Miss Wolo paced the stone hall, her staff tapping a steady rhythm. Zuri sat against the wall, wrists still roped, his red eyes glinting like embers. Sheâd moved him here after the hearingâsafer, sheâd told the Priestessâbut the air felt charged, like trouble brewing.
âWeâre not waiting for Kaelon,â she said, glancing at Anya. Her second-in-commandâs silver eyes flickered as she traced juju runes, a shimmering veil cloaking the room. Miss Wolo cut Zuriâs ropes with her staff. âI saw you fight at Old Brass, Zuri. You protected Kente back then. I trust that.â
Zuri rubbed his wrists, voice low. âThat was a long time ago.â
âNot to me,â she said, lava eyes fierce. âStay close.â Shadowwing swooped in, screeching. âProphet,â she muttered. âItâs starting.â
Zuri's POV
Zuri followed Miss Wolo and Anya through a hidden passage, the walls glowing with blue juju lines. His pendantâOld Brassâs gift, the one he shared with Kente and Aanyaâburned warm against his chest. Orange sparks flickered in his hands, unasked for, wild. He remembered the orphanage: Aanyaâs quiet songs, Kenteâs goofy grin, nights whispering dreams under Old Brassâs dust. That bond kept him grounded, even now.
The air turned icy. âSomethingâs off,â he warned, power surging. Before Miss Wolo could respond, the wall explodedâKaelonâs scarred minion stepped through, chains swinging, the black stoneâs light twisting shadows into claws.

âYouâre ours, boy,â the minion growled.
Zuriâs power roared, orange light flaring. He saw Aanyaâs face in his mindâher promise to find him if they ever got split. He wouldnât let Kaelon break that.
Kente's POV
Kente jolted awake, pendant buzzing. Zuriâs voice from the hearing echoedâtired, defiant. He grabbed his stick, sneaking past Chioma and Tamara, drawn toward the Priestessâs quarters. Near a side gate, he overheard Kaelonâs men: âWoloâs moving him. We hit the passage. Grab Aanya tooâsheâs from Old Brass, tied to the boy.â
His heart sank. Old Brassâthe orphanage where Zuri taught him to fight, where Aanya patched their scrapes with juju and a smile. Kaelon knew. Kente turned to run, but his boot scraped stone. âWhoâs there?â a man barked. He bolted, panic driving him.
Chioma and Tamara's POV
Chioma woke to an empty cot. âKenteâs gone,â she hissed, shaking Tamara. His shell glowed as they tracked him through the misty streets. âHeâs scared,â Tamara whispered.
They found him sprinting, two men on his heels. âTamara, light!â Chioma ordered. The shell flared, blinding the pursuers. Chioma tackled one, pinning him with Old Brass strength. Kente gasped, âTheyâre after Zuriâand Aanya! From the orphanage!â
Aanya's POV
Aanya lingered near the passage, silver eyes glowing as she traced juju to stay hidden. Sheâd overheard Kaelonâs planâZuri, Kente, herâall Old Brass kids, marked by its dust. The passage erupted, Zuriâs orange light clashing with Kaelonâs stone. Miss Wolo fought, Anyaâs shield shimmered, but the stone drained Zuriâs power.
Aanya stepped out, runes blazing on her palms. âStop!â she shouted, flinging blue-green energy at a minion. âYou wonât take my family.â She saw Zuriâs red eyes widenârecognition, relief. Old Brass bound them, stronger than Kaelonâs chains.
The minion sneered. âOrphan brat.â He lunged, but she held firm.
Zuriâs power exploded, orange waves crashing into the minion, cracking stone. Miss Wolo yelled, âControl it!â but it drowned her out. Anyaâs shield blocked debris, Kaelonâs stone pulsed, stealing light. Kente burst in with Chioma and TamaraâKente swinging his stick, Chioma slamming a minion down, Tamaraâs shell pulsing chaos.
âKente!â Zuri rasped, their pendants glowing in sync. Aanyaâs voice cut through: âKaelon, youâre no protectorâyouâre a Harvester!â Her juju flared, shoving Kaelonâs men back. Miss Woloâs staff unleashed a heat wave, silencing the fight.
Resolution
Anya dropped her shield, trembling but resolute. âThat woke everyone,â she said as footsteps thundered above. Miss Wolo pulled Zuri up, Kente rushing to his side, Aanya close behind. âOld Brass holds us,â she whispered, silver eyes on Zuriâs red ones.
The Priestess arrived, furious. âWhat happened?â
âProof,â Miss Wolo said. âKaelon attacked. Zuri, Aanya, Kenteâthey fought back. Theyâre Old Brass, and theyâre ours.â
The Priestess eyed the trioâtheir pendants, their scars. âEmergency meeting. Now.â
Kente gripped Zuriâs hand, Aanya smiling softly. âWeâre safe,â Kente said. Zuri nodded, but the power hummed, untamed, whispering of costs to come.
