ADDY
I step out of Asherâs embrace and spin around to face him. His captivating brown eyes lock onto mine, and I feel like Iâm under a spell.
âPrincess,â Xanderâs voice breaks through, and my head snaps in his direction. His face is unreadable, and thatâs when it hits me. I push away from Asher and move to Xanderâs side.
âWe need to go,â Xander finally says, and I nod. I take a step, but Iâm stopped. A hand wraps around my wrist, holding me back. I glance back to see Asher, his gaze never leaving mine.
âLet me go, Asher. Iâm with Xander right now!â I whisper harshly, tugging at my arm.
âCan we talk?â he asks, his brown eyes filled with hope. But I shake my head. Iâm here with Xander, and no matter how much I want to hear Asherâs explanation for his recent behavior, I canât.
~He canât just do whatever he wants and expect me to agree with everything he says.~
âNo,â I say firmly, but Asher doesnât let go.
âPlease, Buttercup, just listen to me once,â he pleads, but I shake my head.
âYou heard her. Let go of her hand, King!â Xander growls, pulling me away from Asher.
âThis is between Addalynn and me, Grey. I suggest you back the fuck off.â
My eyes go wide.
âJust stop, both of you,â I beg, taking Xanderâs hand. But Asher pulls my hand away again. Xander whirls around, furious, and shoves Asher away. I gasp.
âXander, stop it, letâs just go!â I pull at his arm, but before he can respond, Asherâs fist connects with the side of his face. Xanderâs head snaps to the side.
âXander!â I scream, trying to get between them, but Xander ignores me and punches Asher in the jaw.
Before I can plead for them to stop again, theyâre pulled apart.
âWhat the hell is going on here?â Kaylee demands, with Blake and Gabe appearing behind her. Jalina immediately clings to Asherâs side, fussing over him.
~Seriously, woman, heâs not a baby!~
âNothing,â Xander mutters, pulling away from Kaylee and storming off.
âJust talk to him, Addalynn, one time,â Kaylee whispers before running after Xander.
âBlake, I want candy!â Gabe whines, pouting, and Blake just smacks him on the head.
âJalina, letâs go get a drink,â Blake suggests, grabbing her arm.
âNo, I want to go with Asher!â she protests, but Blake drags her away despite her complaints.
âHeâll catch up with us soon.â
Gabe chuckles at my confused expression, winking at me before following the others.
I glance at Asher before turning and walking off in a random direction.
~If everyoneâs going to ditch me, fine. I wonât let it ruin my night.~
âWhere are you going?â Asher asks, catching up with me quickly.
âNone of your business!â
âIf I buy you ice cream, will you listen to me then?â
My ears perk up at the mention of âice cream.â
âYou had me at ice cream,â I grin, my mood lifting just a bit. Iâm still angry, but who can say no to ice cream?
Asher laughs, pulling me along with him.
~Why is he holding my hand? It feels so damn good.~
~Get it together, Addy!~
We stop in front of a small ice cream parlor, and my mouth waters at the sight of all the different flavors.
âI want a scoop of mint chocolate chip,â I say, and Asher orders the same. He pays for our ice cream, and I thank him. He rewards me with a dazzling smile.
Once weâre away from the parlor, we walk in silence.
âWhy are you here with him?â
I raise an eyebrow at Asher, and he sighs.
âWith Xander, why are you here with him?â
I frown. ~Whatâs wrong with being at the carnival with a friend?~
âHeâs my friend,â I shrug.
âYou just met him!â he grumbles, and I raise an eyebrow.
âWhat do you mean? I only met you a few weeks ago.â
He falls silent at that.
âThatâs different. Weâre neighbors.â
I give Asher a look.
âYou do realize youâre not making any sense, right?â
He doesnât answer, and I canât help but laugh at his frustrated expression.
âStop hanging out with him.â
My mouth drops open in shock.
âWhat do you mean?â ~He canât be serious.~
âExactly what I said. Heâs not good for you.â
Something snaps inside me, and Iâm suddenly furious.
~He ignores me for days and then comes back to tell me who I can and canât hang out with?~
Asher opens his mouth to speak again, but I donât want to hear it. Before he realizes whatâs happening, my ice cream is smeared across his forehead. I keep rubbing it in, now that Iâve started.
âWhat the fuck, Addalynn?â he exclaims.
âDonât âwhat the fuckâ me!â I snap.
âYou donât want me to fuck you?â he asks with a cocky grin, and my mouth drops open in shock.
~Donât deny it, Addy. You know you want himâ¦~
I shake off the voice in my head.
~Stop it, Addalynn. Stop it.~
âI didnât say that!â I smack his arm, my other hand still pressing the ice cream cone to his forehead.
âSo, you do want me to fuck you?â
âNo!â I shout.
Asher grins at me.
âI meant I didnât say that I wanted you to fuck me!â
âMommy, look at what theyâre doing!â A little girl points at us. Her mom just shakes her head and pulls her away.
âYou pig,â I retort.
I glare at him.
~Did he just call me a pig?~
I smash the rest of my ice cream into his face and pull back.
âAddalynn!â he bellows. I glance down at my ruined cone, not at all bothered by the fact that heâs covered in my mint ice cream.
âCan you get me another one? I wasted mine on your hair.â I give him a sheepish smile.
I look up to see him glaring at me. ~Oops.~ If looks could kill, Iâd be six feet under.
***
Luckily for me and unluckily for him, Asher had to go home after the ice cream incident. He handed me his cone before he left. I felt bad, but I couldnât help it. He was messing with my head.
Iâd promised to let him talk, but I avoided him for three straight days. Something was nagging at me. What did he want with me?
I survey my work. Iâve just finished cleaning the entire dance studio. Iâve started practicing a new dance routine and I canât wait to show Kaylee.
âSweetheart!â
I turn to see Margot, the studioâs cleaner.
âYou know cleaning is my job, right? Thatâs what they pay me for!â she chides.
I just laugh.
âI know, Aunt Mar, but I finished practicing and thought, why not? The mirrors were smudged and the floor was dusty.â
She just shakes her head at me.
âWell, thank you, sweetheart, but you need to get home. Itâs almost midnight!â she scolds me again, and my eyes widen. I quickly say goodbye and rush home.
Thank God my parents are away on a business trip. They would have freaked out, probably even called the cops. I hurry home and fifteen minutes later Iâm fumbling with my keys to unlock the door.
I jog up the stairs and try to open my door, groaning when it doesnât budge.
~What the hell?~
I give it another push and the door swings open. Suddenly, Iâm yanked inside.
âAhhhhhh!â I scream, but my voice is muffled against a chest.
âYou scared the shit out of me!â a voice scolds me, and their grip tightens around me. I freeze.
âAsher? What the hell are you doing in my room?â I try to push him away, but itâs no use.
He buries his face in my hair, and I smile, my heart pounding.
âYou scared me!â I scold him, stepping out of his arms. If I stay, Iâll never be able to leave.
âWhat the hell were you doing out so late?â
I flip on the lights to get a better look at him. He looks adorable.
âDancing.â I shrug and push him toward my window.
âNow go, I need to sleep!â I yawn at him.
âNo, we need to talk!â he insists, but I just mumble a later and head to the bathroom to brush my teeth.
âTomorrow!â
~Asher King, you better be gone when I get back!~
