ADDY
I toss the duvet aside and climb out of bed. After freshening up, I head downstairs to find Mom and Dad sharing a laugh in the kitchen.
âMorning, sweetheart. Youâre finally up?â Mom greets me.
âYeah,â I mumble, sinking into a chair.
âItâs already 7:36 p.m. You never sleep all day on a Saturday.â
Dad chuckles, and I just shrug in response.
âJust felt tired.â
âHungry?â
I shake my head, my gaze fixed on the kitchen table. I havenât had much of an appetite these past few days.
âBut, Muffin, I made your favorite,â Dad says, gesturing toward the rice and curry on the table with a grin.
I manage a smile. âThanks, Dad, but Iâm really not hungry.â
When Iâm upset, I either eat too much or not at all. This time, itâs the latter.
âYou should go finish checking those files in your study,â Mom suggests to Dad, raising an eyebrow.
âWhat filesâ?â Dad starts, but quickly catches on. âRight, those big files! I better get to it!â He stands up and hurries out of the kitchen.
âCome on, honey. Letâs watch ~Iron Man~ and have some cheesecake.â
She grabs two plates, spoons, and the whole cake she baked earlier for dessert, then gestures toward the living room.
âMa, Iâm really not in the mood for ~Iron Man~!â I protest.
Mom pouts, and I canât help but laugh. âMa, stop it. Donât give me that face. Iâm really not in the mood!â
âNonsense. Come on, honey.â She strides out of the kitchen, and I follow her, shaking my head.
Mom has a way of getting me to do things.
We settle on the sofa, and she turns on the TV, starting the movie. Halfway through, Iâm already feeling better. I sit with my legs draped over Momâs lap, both of us engrossed in a movie weâve seen four times already.
As the credits roll, I finish my second slice of cake.
âThanks, ma!â I say, and she smiles back at me.
âWant to tell me whatâs been bothering you, baby?â
I glance at her through my lashes.
âWhat? Nothing!â I laugh awkwardly, trying to brush it off, but she wraps an arm around me.
âTell me!â
âYou wonât let this go, will you?â
âNo. I want to know why youâve been moping around for days. My baby is a happy girl. I want her back!â I groan.
âSo the guy I likeââ I start.
âYeah, the neighborsâ son.â My mom nods, expecting me to continue.
âMom!â I shriek.
âWhat? It was obvious. I may be away on business trips, but that doesnât mean I donât pay attention to my daughter.â She shrugs, and I laugh.
âMom, youâre crazy!â
âYeah, people tell me that every now and then. Now, whatâs the problem?â
I shake my head at her.
âEverything was good, and now heâs suddenly ignoring me. I donât know why or if I did something wrong. I just donât understand.â I rest my head on her shoulder.
âHave you tried talking to Asher?â
âYes, but he wonât listen to me.â
âYou know what I think?â she asks, flicking my nose.
âHmm?â
âI think that heââ
âAha, I knew it was a boy!â Dad bursts into the room. âIâm going to kill him! Who is he to make my Muffin cry? Iâm going to hurt him so bad he wonât know his own name!â
âDad, were you eavesdropping?â
â...No?â
We shake our heads at him, laughing. Mom points toward the door, and Dad whines.
âWhere was I? Yeahââ Mom starts again, only to be interrupted by a loud noise from my pocket.
I pull out my phone.
Xander.
âTake the call, honey. We can talk later. You can always talk to me if you ever need anything,â she says, kissing my head.
I smile up at her before answering the call.
âHey, Xander.â
Mom takes our plates and heads back into the kitchen where Dad disappeared to.
âHey, princess. Listen, I know itâs late, but Iâm really sorry about what happened.â
âDonât worry about it.â I sigh and drop the bomb. âThe thing is...I like someone else. I went out with you just as a friend.â
Xander is silent, and I bite my lip waiting for his response. âI get it. Friends?â
âYes!â I say, relieved.
âHa-ha, good.â
âUm, by the wayâ¦â
âYeah?â he asks.
âI was wondering if you could help me with my German. My teacher is going to kill me if I donât pass the next test. I know youâre probably busy, but youâre fluent and Iââ
âAddy!â He interrupts my rambling. âIâd love to teach you German!â
I smile.
~Thank God!~
âOMG, thank you so much! I owe you a big favor!â
He laughs.
âWhere and when?â
âSaturday, my place? Mom will be home, but sheâll probably be in her room. We can sit in the living room. Dad has a big-ass whiteboard there.â
âHa-ha! Well then, Saturday at your place!â
âCool, then.â
âMuffin?â
I look up to see Dad rushing toward me.
âYouâre turning eighteen on Saturday!â he exclaims, grinning.
I chuckle.
âIâm aware, Dad.â
âDonât go blabbing to her now!â Momâs voice rings out from the kitchen. âDidnât you get the âsurpriseâ part of our plan?â
Dad flashes Mom an apologetic grin, and I quickly cover my ear.
âI didnât catch a thing.â
âShe didnât hear a thing.â Dad points at me, playing innocent. Mom just sighs and heads back into the kitchen, Dad trailing behind her.
âYour birthdayâs this Saturday?â Xander sounds surprised.
I let out a nervous chuckle.
âYeah, the big one-eight.â
âThatâs awesome. We can reschedule our study session if youâve got plans?â
âNo, itâs fine... donât worry about it. Just swing by my place on Saturday. I really appreciate your help.â
âNot a problem, Addy! See you then.â
âSee ya!â I pull the phone away from my ear, ending the call, a wave of relief washing over me.
~Friends.~
~Thank goodness he gets it.~
ASHER
I glance over at her window, like I do every night.
Her room is dark.
Is she asleep?
âAsher, you there?â I draw my curtains closed and slump back onto my bed, phone still pressed to my ear.
âYeahâ¦â
âIf you donât spill your stupid reason for giving her the cold shoulder, Iâm gonna tell her what you just told me.â
âBlake, shut up!â
âIâm serious!â
I grip the phone tighter. âWhy are you siding with her after what I just told you?â
âIâm not. I just donât get why sheâd do that in the first place. I thought she was into you.â
âWell, sheâs not.â
âBut I still think she is. Kaylee says sheâs been down in the dumps for days. She hardly leaves her room, doesnât laugh much, and barely eats.â
âWhat do you mean, she barely eats?â I sit up abruptly.
âShe only eats when Kaylee and her mom make her. Other than that, sheâs not taking care of herself.â Blake relays what Kaylee must have told him.
I clench my jaw and stand up, pacing my room.
What the hell, Buttercup? You need to eat.
âGo talk to her. She wouldnât be like this if she didnât care about you. But she does.â
âI saw it, though. Jalinaââ
âYouâre choosing to believe Jalina over Addy? You know Jalinaâs never liked Addy. That girlâs always been out to sabotage whatever you two had. Even if youâre hurt by what you saw, ask her. Find out why she did it!â
âYou usually give crappy advice.â
âYou usually keep everything bottled up. Iâm glad you finally opened up.â
âShut up!â
Blake groans.
âGo fix things before itâs too late.â And with that, he hangs up.
Confront Addyâ¦
Ask herâ¦.
She doesnât like you.
Sheâs in love with Xanderâ¦.
