Chapter forty-nine

❱ Sterling noticed the way Rory and I gazed at one another.

"Tell me" he said but I didn't dared to say anything. I quickly removed my eyes from Rory's and focused on Sterling. He knew something was going on and he knew that we were hiding something.

"Thea doesn't feel comfortable living with her uncle anymore" Rory suddenly said. When sterling looked away from, I sighed softly and closed my eyes.

"Why? What did he do?" Sterling looked at both of us but locked his eyes on me.

"After what he's done to you, I don't feel safe being around him" I quickly made something up which made sterling understand. It was true but it wasn't the whole truth and it should stay like that for now.

"That's why I was telling Thea to say at my house for while." Rory suddenly suggested it once again. Sterling swiftly switched his gaze towards Rory. His expression changed from concern to confusion.

"Wait, are you being serious?" Sterling asked and for some reason he looked bothered.

"Are you actually going to?" He suddenly turn towards me.

"No, of course not" I said almost angrily.

"Why not?" Rory asked.

I hesitated before answering.

"Because if I want to ruin Bruce, I need to have prove of something to show the police so they can throw him to jail." I said as I groaned in annoyance.

The thought of Bruce walking freely while doing his dirty business bothered me. He was secretive with everything he did so everyone wouldn't suspect he was a criminal.

"And you're going to do that all alone? Or do you have someone else?" Sterling asked, almost like he knew I wasn't doing this all alone.

"I'm not doing it alone" I responded quietly. I looked away from Sterling, to avoid his curious but concerning look. I did the mistake to lock my gaze towards Rory. He had his arms across his chest as he leaned onto the love seat, and all along staring at me.

He was trying to read me.

"With who?" Asked sterling but my eyes didn't look back at him. My gaze was glued to Rory, and I felt compelled to only look at him.

I felt the need to explain myself to him.

"I did the mistake of getting involved with Raine and Alec. A couple of weeks ago, Raine had told me she wanted to get revenge of Bruce and asked me if I wanted to be part of it. I accepted, of course. But at that time, I didn't know who she truly was. I wasn't aware that she was going to be manipulative and cruel, just like Alec. They were both just full of shit when I met them. Telling me that Bruce has done something to them and they wanted revenge but I never really understood why they wanted me to be part of it" Rory only furrowed his eyebrows.

"What if they are just setting you up?" I looked back at sterling, confused.

"You were saying that you never understood why they brought you with them. Maybe they are trying to fool you into doing something, to frame you instead trying to involve you?" he tried to explain himself but he seemed unsure.

"Why would they do that?" I asked, questions running through my head.

Soon it was quiet, our thoughts taking over.

"Alec and Raine aren't framing you, they are trying to take revenge.." sterling and I snap our head towards Rory who was looking down at the floor, with a thoughtful look.

"What? Why? I haven't done anything to them"

"Maybe not them, but someone else. They might be working for someone else" sterling added.

Someone else?

"Bruce" Rory and I said at the same time, our eyes locking as well.

It had to be Bruce, who else would do this?

"He was the one who engaged me with Alec, and I could see how close they are. It has to be Bruce who is making them play with me. What is the point of it anyway? To laugh at my face because I fell for it?" I said as realization started to hit me.

"Thea, it might not even be true, please calm down" sterling tired to comfort me but I pushed him away.

"Its Bruce, he's capable of anything. God, I'm just angry that I actually fell for it." I rubbed my face in frustration.

I sat on the couch and all these questions and thoughts ran through my head. I ignored sterling calling out to me and focused on how I was going to get out of this.

"I'm going to go on a date with Alec but I'm not going to let him know I know." I lifted my head and up and found them staring at me.

"And right after I'm going to confront Bruce and make him tell me the truth"
