It was nighttime, two days following our interrogation.
There was a person here, right outside of the Imperial capital city, paying a visit to a certain merchant.
Unable to stay calm, he examined his surroundings and behaving truly suspiciously suspiciously.
ââ¦â¦ Why did this have to happenâ¦â¦â
He held his head as if he was afraid of something.
A certain voice reached his ears.
âAchim-sanâ¦â¦ Whyâ¦â¦â
âAhhâ¦â¦â
That person was Achim Balser.
Right now, he was hearing a voice that he shouldnât be hearing.
âArnaudâ¦â¦ Arenât you supposed to be deadâ¦â¦!â
âYesâ¦â¦ You were the one who killed meâ¦â¦â
âT-That wasâ¦â¦ because there was no other choice! If I didnât do it, my son wouldâveââ!â
Achim shook his head around as if trying to get the voice out of his head.
But the voice continued.
âWhy did you kill meâ¦â¦ Even though I gave it my all for the sake of the companyâ¦â¦â
âI had no other choice! If I hadnât done it, Iâ¦â¦ Iâ¦â¦!â
âThatâs rightâ¦â¦ You were the one who killed meâ¦â¦ It was youâ¦â¦â
âPlease stop alreadyâ¦â¦ Stop itâ¦â¦!â
Achim started moving away from the Imperial capital city like he was trying to run away from the voice.
It seemed that he was heading towards a building that was just around the corner.
Howeverââ
âCould you tell us more about what you just said?â
â!?â
Of course, the dignified voice that broke the air in the darkness belonged to none other than Claire-sama.
The voice that Achim was hearing was created using Mishaâs wind magic.
âY-Youâ¦â¦ Why are you hereâ¦â¦?â
âAchim Balser. You are under arrest on the charge of Arnaud Jansenâs murder.â
âPrincessâ¦â¦â
When he heard Philineâs proclamation, Achim looked like he had just realized something.
âWe will take those words as a confession. Please admit to your crimes, okay?â
ââ¦â¦.â
If this were a democratic nation from the 21st century, going on a confession alone was not enough to detain somebody, but this was a completely different world.
A confession counted just as much as concrete evidence did.
ââ¦â¦ How did you know it was meâ¦â¦?â
âYou said it yourself, didnât you? That you are a very busy merchant, to the point where your schedule is always filled to the brim.â
âI did say that, but what of it?â
Achim looked like he couldnât understand where my words were going.
I continued.
âHowever, when you gave us your alibi, you testified to it without even checking a notebook or anything.â
âPerhaps my memory is just really outstanding. Iâm a merchant, you know?â
âBut you mentioned something else as well. Recently, your memories have become increasingly vague. For something as important as providing an alibi to a murder case, I canât even imagine somebody providing one without even double-checking. Especially if youâre a merchant.â
âCato, the person you mentioned during your alibi, also provided a confession. He said he was bribed with money and forced to cover for you.â
ââ¦â¦ I seeâ¦â¦ You arenât revered as the heroine of the revolution for nothing, huh. If itâs you guysâ¦â¦ perhaps I could even entrust this to you.â
Achim said something that we couldnât quite understand.
âEntrust? What are you talking about?â
Philine asked.
âThat would beâ¦â¦â
âOh? Well, if it isnât Achim-san?â
A person came out of the building and showed his face to us.
It was Cato, the person that was bribed and forced into assisting Achim with his falsified testimony.
ââ¦â¦â
âWhatâs up? What are you doing here?â
âCatoâ¦..! Please help me!â
Achim, who had looked composed up until now, suddenly started pleading Cato for help.
Oh?
Did you think you could escape from this situation?
âSo thatâs whatâs going on, huhâ¦â¦ Donât touch me, you lowly human.â
â! You, donât tell me you-!?â
As if she had realized something, Claire-sama assumed a ready stance after Cato changed his tone of voice.
I braced myself for a fight as well.
âIâve tried to meddle around in various ways, but it looks like nothing went well, huh.â
Catoâs appearance began to change quite dramatically.
His skin looked like liquid metal and he had one huge eyeball.
Along with the bat wings on his back, this grotesuqe-looking creature was unmistakablyââ
âA demon!â
âCall me Cato, you human.â
What was this?
A demon was involved in this incidentâ¦â¦?
âYou dirty human beings. Allow me, Cato, to kill you allâ¦â¦ Hey, Achim! Quit clinging onto me! Youâre a failure.â
Cato looked at Achim like he was even lower than dirt and waved his hand up in the air.
That very hand began to change into the form of a long sword.
I rushed to shoot an ice arrow at it, but I couldnât make it in time.
Howeverââ
ââ¦â¦ Itâs fine, this is all going according to plan.â
âWhat?â
âCato, you are the mastermind behind this incident!â
As soon as Achim spoke, his body lit up into flames.
âGaaaah! Youâ¦â¦!â
âHeroines of the revolution! Thereâs a letter I left on my desk! Iâll leave the rest to you all.â
Achim exclaimed as he engulfed Cato in the flames.
The flames didnât seem to be natural, and Achim was burned in an instant.
None of us knew what was going on.
We were clueless, but we knew what we had to do.
âClaire-sama, letâs take this guy down!â
As we made our preparations, Cato peeled Achimâs body off of himself.
âYou bastard human beingsâ¦â¦! Donât look down on me!â
Catoâs wings were tattered from Achimâs flames.
I had no idea what happened between them, but thanks to that, Cato could not escape.
âEven this kind of scratch wonât hinder me from destroying the likes of you!â
Cato extended his arm.
The tip was just as sharp as a spear, and he tried to stab Claire-sama and Lily-sama with it.
âT-That wonât hit us!â
Lily-samaâs body looked light as she dodged the attack and she quickly managed to close the distance.
Sheâs fast.
It seemed that her body was being enhanced with Mishaâs wind magic.
âNah, Iâve got you, Saint!â
The arm that just passed by Lily-samaâs side suddenly curved and was about to attack her from behind.
âI-I messed upâ¦â¦!â
âI wonât let you!â
Claire-sama immediately fired a flame spear and melted Catoâs arm.
âGaaah!?â
âNow, Lily!â
âY-Yes!â
Lily-sama was right in front of Catoâs eyes as she pulled out a dagger from her right hand.
ââ¦â¦. Just kidding!â
Catoâs face was painted with delight.
A spear-like object extended out from his chest as he tried to skewer Lily-sama.
â!?â
However, Catoâs spear only pierced the air.
The ground underneath Catoâs feet was raised about one head up..
I used my âUpliftâ spell on him.
âThis is the end.â
Lily-sama, who instantly wrapped around to his backside, held both of her daggers in a cross.
In the next moment, she sliced the area around Catoâs heart in four.
âYou humansâ¦â¦ Why wonât you just accept the fate of destructionâ¦â¦â
Cato cried as his head hit the ground.
Without lowering my guard, I answered.
âMore than anything, I donât really understand the feelings of the people that are so eager to pursue death.â
âRei Taylorâ¦â¦ Youâll understand it someday.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âThe meaning behind wanting to pursue the end.â
As Cato left us with a statement that seemed to suggest something, he turned into dust.
I wonder what he meant.
âClaire-sama, Lily-sama, are you both alright?â
âIâm fine.â
âM-Me too.â
It seemed that our encounter with the demon this time around ended without sustaining any injuries.
As expected, compared to the Three Great Archdukes, a regular demon was much more inferior.
âI wasnât of much help, huh.â
âThatâs not true. If you werenât here, Misha, we wouldnât have been able to corner Achim-san to begin with.â
âAbout Achimâ¦â¦ He said something interesting, didnât he?â
âY-Yes, he said heâd leave the rest to us or somethingâ¦â¦?â
The four of us tilted our heads in confusion.
But anyway,
âFor the time being, letâs return to the Imperial capital city.â
The full truth behind the incident was still not revealed yet, but we left things like this for the time being.
