The Magi Shibley broke into pieces that now lay scattered on the ground.
We could only look on in shock.
âWith this, youâve lost your trump card.â
Rates laughed menacingly.
Though frustrating, it was just as he said.
If we didnât have the Magi Shibley, we had no way of breaking the Demon Queenâs magic barrier.
âNow then, you really did a number on me, perhaps I should have you depart.â
âQuite the line coming from you. Werenât you the one pulling us around?â
âWas that the caseâ¦? In my old age, I canât seem to remember.â
âHah, get real.â
Rodd-samaâs attitude suddenly worsened.
Rates had really pulled a fast one on us, so it was understandable.
In retrospect, the guy had regenerated repeatedly during the Popeâs failed assassination attempt.
This was an error on our part.
âMei, Alea, lend me your ears.â
âââ¦?ââ
Rodd-sama whispered something directly into their ears.
The two nodded in response.
âHaving a strategy meeting are we? I donât mind. Struggle as much as youâd like.â
It seems that Rates was feeling quite good now that he had completed his task.
Without even trying to interfere, he calmly waited.
âYou got it?â
âYup.â
âI understand.â
Finishing their discussion, they promptly took formation. Rodd-sama and Alea in front, with Mei in the back.
âHave you finished?â
âYeah, sorry to keep you waiting.â
âI donât mind. After all, you will all soon die.â
âToo bad for you, Iâm a bit of a sore loser.â
âYou sure do talk. But well, seeing guys like you lose heart is one of the things that brings me joy in my old age.â
âHeâs coming!â
Rates again rushed forward for a heavy strike.
ââ!â
Though Alea momentarily tensed up, she quickly moved her body to dodge Ratesâ rush.
âThere!â
As his attack was avoided, Rates needed time to recover his stance. Alea took the opportunity to land a sharp slash.
The sword, a magic artifact inherited from Dorothea, left a deep scar in Ratesâ tough skin.
âMm. That stung just a bit.â
âItâs my teacherâs sword. Of course it would!â
âAlea, donât! Itâs a trap!â
â!?â
âIt hurts.â
Alea tried to run, but it seemed that her sword had cut too deep and couldnât be pulled out.
Rates harshly whipped his arm, bouncing Alea off like a rubber ball.
âAlea!â
âI-Iâm okayâ¦â
Claireâs expression soured, but it seems that Alea hadnât sustained any major injuries.
âHm?â
âYou really saved me, Mei!â
âLeave it to me!â
It seems Mei had cast some sort of magic to form a cushion between Alea and Ratesâ arm.
For my daughter, she had displayed wonderful tact.
âHmph, how bothersome.â
âDonât you think youâre giving them too much attention?â
As Rates sighed, Rodd-sama slashed at him from behind.
Though his sword was broken, fire filled out the broken part of the blade.
âYou should just sleep.â
â!?â
Though Rates looked vulnerable, he had actually read Rodd-samaâs actions.
Dodging Rodd-samaâs sword by bending his upper body backward in a way that would be impossible for human joints, he quickly corrected his stance and brought his sickles down on Rodd-sama.
âGahaahhâ¦!â
Rodd-sama was sent flying.
He narrowly managed to put his sword between himself and the sickles, but was unable to get into a proper position and brace the fall. His body slammed into the Magi Shibleyâs debris.
It seems Meiâs defense did not make it in time.
ââRodd-sama!ââ
âHmm, this boy has quite the head on him. If it were just you girls, I doubt you wouldâve been able to make that last call.â
So thatâs what had happened.
Mei had likely formed a telepathy channel. Using that channel, Rodd-sama was giving instructions to Mei and Alea in real time.
Thatâs why she made it in Aleaâs case, but couldnât do the same for Rodd-sama.
âIt looks like Iâll need to dispose of you first after all.â
ââ¦â
Rates once again charged forward, this time at Rodd-sama who was struggling to get up.
âStop!â
âI wonât allow it!â
Mei launched magic and Alea swung her sword, but neither were enough to stop Ratesâ momentum.
âItâs over.â
Along with the sound of a car crash, Rodd-samaâs body flew up into the air.
âRodd-sama!â
Claire-sama screamed.
As Rodd-samaâs body slammed into the ground, a heavy noise could be heard.
âThereâs one. Well then, girls, itâs yourââ
â⦠Heh⦠hehehâ¦â
This weak laugh had come from Rodd-sama.
â⦠Your stubbornness is quite astounding. Youâre still alive?â
âDidnât I sayâ¦? I couldnât bear⦠to show the woman I love⦠such a pitiful sight.â
Though he was putting up a brave front, Rodd-sama could no longer stand.
âHm⦠while your efforts are praiseworthy, what can you do? You appear to be on deathâs door.â
âIâm not gonna do anything⦠itâs already over.â
â?â
Ratesâ face was filled with doubt, but he suddenly dropped to his knees.
âMm? Whatâs thisâ¦?â
âHeh, still havenât realized itâ¦?â
âM-my strength is fadingâ¦!â
Ratesâ large frame was visibly deflating, akin to a balloon.
âYou, what did youâ¦!?â
âThe Magi Shibley you destroyed⦠I let it take its revenge.â
It appeared that the Magi Shibleyâs sword-like protrusion was sticking out from Ratesâ back.
âWha!?â
âThat part is a magic artifact. Its job is to release the collected magic energy. I have no idea how your regeneration works, but Iâd bet it needs magic energy, yeah? Then Iâll just have this guy scatter it all.â
âGnnhâ¦, I canât pull it outâ¦!â
Rates desperately tried to separate himself and the Magi Shibleyâs part, but as though it had merged with his body, it wouldnât move an inch.
âRemember this as your souvenir to hell. In a battle of wits amongst the weak, no one tops us humans.â
âIn this way⦠to something like this Iâllâ¦!â
Ratesâ body, which had shrunk to the size of a cow, continued to shrink.
âPass on, old man.â
â⦠Hmph. To think you had this up your sleeve. Luck is also part of skill, eh? This is why I despise humans.â
Perhaps having given up, Rates spoke as though sighing in lament.
âSo, in the end, how does your regeneration work?â
âWhy do you want to know?â
âAinât it obvious? If someone likes you pops up again, I want to be able to kill them reliably.â
ââ¦Kufu⦠hahahaâ¦!â
Ratesâ shrinking body shook in laughter.
After laughing for some time, as though saying itâs fine as heâll be dead either way, he continued.
âWhen cells are purged from this body, they momentarily become magic energy and decompose before rebinding in their original shape. However, if they are constantly decomposed and dispersed regardless of my will, the command to rebind wonât make it in time. Haha, Iâll finally die! What a good feeling!â
Unexpectedly, Rates seemed very cheerful as he laughed.
âMy apologies, Demon Queen. Iâll take my leave here. Iâll be praying for your fortune in battle.â
âYou served me well.â
Having exchanged his final words with the Demon Queen, Rates body became but a speck, this time disappearing without a trace.
The Magi Shibleyâs part fell onto the ground with a clank.
Rates, who we had thought mightâve been immortal, truly vanished this time, leaving nothing.
âAhh, that was roughâ¦â
âRodd-sama!â
âMei, heal him!â
Mei and Alea rushed to Rodd-samaâs side and began healing him.
Though he was still breathing, his wounds were by no means shallow.
âââââ
âSo Rates has passed tooâ¦â
The words seemed to spill out of the Demon Queenâs mouth.
Iâm sure that the grief that tinged her voice was not something I imagined.
It seems that they were not simply throwaway pawns to her.
âThat said, theyâve done me well. As long as that is gone, you all have no way to harm me.â
âKhhâ¦â
Claire-sama big her lip in frustration.
Claire-samaâs Magic Ray, my Absolute Zero, Manariaâs attack magic, Lilyâs sword attacks⦠we had tried it all.
However, the barrier blocked all of them.
We had no options.
âI lost all of the Three Great Archdukes but⦠perhaps Iâll start by killing everyone except for Claire-sama and think about what to do after that.â
The Demon Queen casually waved her hand horizontally.
I quickly brought up a bulwark composed of tungsten carbide, but the Demon Queenâs black shockwave easily cut it apart.
âGet down!â
I was pushed down onto the ground from behind.
â⦠You saved me, Claire-sama.â
âThat isnât something weâre able to block. Concentrate on dodging.â
Remaining cautious of follow up attacks, Claire-sama stood and stared at the Demon Queen.
âYouâre really struggling. Am I that important to you?â
âItâs not you. Having lost sight of yourself and fallen to evil, I donât find you attractive in the slightest.â
ââ¦â
âThe Rei I loved is the one that never gave up, continued to love me, and lit my path forward.â
âIâm doing the same⦠though itâs the path to destruction.â
âIâm saying that I reject such a thing.â
Claire-sama tried to take my handâ, however.
âGuhâ¦!â
âI wonât allow you two to form a chorus, thatâd be a bit dangerous after all.â
The chorus was the one thing we had yet to try against the Demon Queen.
However, the Demon Queen had been wary, refusing to give us a chance.
âRegardless of what you may think, I will carry out the decision that Iâve made.â
âYou stubbornâ¦!â
âSay what you like.â
The Demon Queen shrugged before continuing.
âI have but one desire. To end everything⦠and disappear myself.â
It seems that even Claire-samaâs words could no longer reach the Demon Queen.
