Chapter 16: Chapter 15: Someone New

A Vet for the AlphaWords: 3949

"No, I don't think you can learn Korean." Reed's voice sounds in my head, although we're over a mile apart from each other. Nose to the ground, my paws keeping a sharp pace along the pack's boundary line, I'm checking for any scent that is unfamiliar.

"Alec learned it." I keep tracking along the West side border, towards Alec's clinic, while Reed is tracking along the South. One of the patrol scouts had picked up a new scent just outside our land about twenty minutes ago and we joined to check it out.

New scents pop up from time to time, it isn't necessarily a threat. It could be someone driving had stopped to let their dog run around the woods for a bit. Sometimes, it's a regular wolf, attracted by the large scent of the pack.

"And our Luna is much too good for you. But didn't you say he did an exchange program when he was a teen? I heard immersion is the key to learning a new language. And your ass is here."

"But I could talk to Alec in Korean."

"Considering you already talk to Alec in English, I'm going to guess that you're still jealous."

"I'm not jealous." Anymore.

Not like I first was when I heard Alec cheerfully greet some man over the phone. It wasn't the voice he used to greet Dee or any of his clients. It was the voice he uses to greet...other dogs.

That afternoon, I learned that Alec knew a second language. I learned that he had an exchange family that he keeps in contact with. And I learned that I still don't know much about Alec's personal life.

That thought had sobered most of my jealousy. Not to mention, Alec looked so happy and relaxed after talking to who I now know is his exchange brother, that I couldn't really be jealous. Anyone that makes Alec genuinely happy is okay by me..

Although, I would also like to be someone that makes Alec happy. Possibly, even the happiest.

When I saw him in his office a couple of days ago, I ended up angering him. But instead of me having to start over in gaining his trust, Alec forgave me. I hope this means that Alec's feelings for me are deepening, that our mate bond is growing in him.

"I'm getting close to the clinic, keep your head down and focus on any possible threats."

"Yes, Alpha."

With Reed going silent, I started to think about bringing Alec lunch tomorrow. I have some time in between work and class and I told Dee I would bring it myself, since the cat's out of the bag.

The pack meals are prepared as shared chores since there's a lot of people to feed. Also, we patrol in shifts so werewolves are coming in and out twenty-four seven. And werewolves can eat a lot. So there's almost always food being cooked and someone in the kitchen. So, when I told the main wolves in charge of the kitchen that I was going to send food to my mate, they were very excited to do so. Alec's been getting some of the best of the best of pack fare.

Breaking past the tree line to Alec's field, I could sense only recognizable scents, one of which being my mate's. Good. Whatever was traveling through here hasn't gotten close to my vet.

Crouching low, I move through the waving grass towards the clinic. Alec's scent was too irresistible, delicious as always.

I settled my large wolf form down in the grass as close to the clinic as I dared. It doesn't smell as if Alec has any patients right now. Maybe I should go to the tree where I keep my spare clothes and stop in and see him? He should be getting done with work soon.

The wind shifted and I could smell it. Not a wolf, but a person, downwind. Still far enough away to hide in the thick trees. Still too close to Alec.

I didn't even see where the arrow came from. Ripping into my chest. I try to stand on all fours but even a slight breath sends pain radiating out from my chest, rippling through my whole body, causing me to whimper.

I need to call for Reed.

I need to get to Alec.

And...I can't seem to keep... my eyes op...en...
