Fuck, I'm late. Oh, not today, please not today!
I press the pedal down, still five minutes away from Alec's clinic. So stupid. I shouldn't have done paperwork after patrol. Ugh, he's going to be so pissed.
Last night was the end of covering night patrol. I've been immersing myself in studying and to stop thinking about finally going on a date with my little mate, not that its helped much. I went to my office to make sure that I cleared my desk of anything that would interfere with my time with Alec today.
Unfortunately, it meant I was there to answer the call from the Alpha of Dark Rains pack. I've known Evan almost my whole life because our packs are both part of the Northwest region. Like me, he's also taking over the reins recently from his father and he's been trying to convince me to come for a visit.
I've only told my pack about finding my mate and I was hard-pressed to come up with a reason to avoid leaving the area right now. As an Alpha now, I need to maintain the pack relationships, so I had to try and remain diplomatic. When Alec accepts me, I'll visit all of the packs in our division so that they can meet my Luna properly.
I pull up and park next to Alec's car and I'm almost twenty minutes late. Climbing out, I pause to check myself over before heading up. I usually keep my hair short enough that my cowlick isn't out of control but I run my fingers through it just in case.
After I showered earlier I dressed in a pair of jeans and a shirt. The jeans are one of my more uncomfortable pairs because they're a little tight, but I've noticed that when my pants are tight, Alec's eyes tend to drift downward. Oh yeah, he's been checking me out.
I mostly have tee shirts but I'm required to dress up from time to time so I paired the jeans with a nice, crisp white dress shirt. Though, the heat of summer is still in effect and I'm regretting the long sleeves, even though they're folded up. I really hope that I don't end up sweating all day long.
I start to head up the wooded stairs off to the side of the two-story building but jerk my head up when I hear, "You're late."
Alec is already heading down towards me. I know I shouldn't but a grin stretches across my face. I can't help it, I haven't seen Alec in two days and he looks so beautiful with the early sun shining behind him. Even his disapproving glower can't dampen it.
Alec doesn't stop as he squeezes by me on the narrow steps, continuing down to the ground. I sink my teeth into my bottom lip as I watch. He looks just as good from the back. He's wearing shorts in some sort of beige fabric that are perfectly tailored to that ass. His short-sleeved button down is a light wine color and tucked in, showing his figure off to perfection.
"Most people don't smile when they're late, but I guess you haven't learned that yet." Alec's annoyed voiced drifts up to me and he doesn't look back as he starts across the gravel towards his car. I'm still standing part-way up the stairs and quickly hurry to join him.
"I'm sorry! About being late, I got held up- " I get cut off by Alec raising his hand up, silencing me. He doesn't turn to look at me until he's standing between our two vehicles. He spins on his heel and puts the full force of his angry eyes on me. Adorable.
"I don't care. Can we go?"
"Of course!" I step forward to open the door for him, but he turns to his own little car instead. "Oh, I thought I'd drive."
With a pinched look, Alec turns back to me. "Why?"
"Well, I know where we're going... "
Alec looks at me before fixing a glare at my truck. "I'm not riding in that."
I hold my hand up to my chest in mock offense. "What's wrong with my baby?"
"That you call it your 'baby' is the first reason that comes to mind." Alec runs his scrutiny over the all-terrain tires and lifted frame. "The second is that I don't hate mother nature. You said this drive was an hour away, didn't you? We'll take my car."
Shrugging, I start around to the other side and squeeze myself into the tiny little space of the passenger seat. I push the button to put it all the way back but my knees are still bent up rather high. After Alec climbs in and starts the engine he rolls his window down.
"I don't like driving with the AC on, so I hope you're not feeling too hot," my mate smiles at me in false cheerfulness before pulling out a pair of sunglasses and putting them on. I'm sweltering but I just silently roll down my window as well. He pulls out of the spot and we start on our way.
I'm not going to complain or argue. I finally have Alec all to myself and I'll be damned if the day gets ruined. I give Alec directions that he puts into his GPS. Even if it's hot, the wind causes Alec's rich smell to blow around the car and as we hit the highway I'm smiling fully again.
Leaning on the small armrest, I take this chance to let my gaze run over my mate. "You look really nice today."
"Nope." Alec doesn't even glance my way. He reaches out and turns on the radio, raising the volume to an incredible volume before ignoring me completely. He can't stop from staring at him though and we proceed to make the journey without speaking.
As we near the city, I lean over and turn the volume down again. "If you want, I can show you my campus?"
Without looking my way Alec scoffs. "No, thanks. I just want to buy my furniture and go home."
"Come on, it will be fun," I cajole. Did he really not figure out that I intend to make a day of this? "Besides, we have tons of time before the store opens."
Alec finally turns to look at me, turning so slowly that I start to glance nervously at the road in front of us. He still drives steadily but doesn't seem to be focused.
"What do you mean before the store opens? Aren't we going there now?"
"Um, Alec... the road."
Reluctantly, Alec turns back to front. I can tell his jaw his clenched with annoyance. Trying to relieve some of his tension, I force a chuckle. "What furniture store opens at this early on a Sunday, Alec? I thought we could get some brunch."
"Brunch!" Alec's voice is thunderous even over the sound of the wind blowing in through the windows. He pulls off his sunglasses in annoyance, tossing them onto the dash. "I've been driving us to brunch?!"
"Yes, but then to furniture shopping!" I can feel my mate's anger pulsating through him. His tiny frame is tensed, his knuckles gripping white on the steering wheel. Surprisingly, it's sort of working for me.
I mean, I've seen him get riled when I visit at the clinic but he was already riled when I picked him up. I thought maybe riding without bothering him as he preferred would have cooled his ire, but now he was really upset with me. So hot.
Unexpectedly, heat is spreading down to my groin. My body is already sensitized from inhaling his scent for the last hour, so getting hard is rather easy to do. I imagine Alec under me, his body just as tense, but also trembling. The same fire in his eyes, only for a different reason. Moans coming out from between his lips.
"-ey! You half-witted gorilla, are you listening to me?"
Shit! Shaking my hid, I try to rid myself of those wonderful images that I will return to later, in private, and try to focus.
"I'm sorry! I should have asked you before making plans." Alec throws me another glare, but I keep talking. "If you don't want to do anything else, we can go straight to the store and wait for it to open, then straight home."
If that's what he wants, that's what we'll do. Silently, I hold my breath and wait for his answer. I never would have thought he'd get so upset spending time with me. Thankfully, my apology must have been in accord to whatever he'd said that I'd missed. After a few, slow and deliberate, breaths Alec has calmed himself down. Though, when he speaks his teeth are still clenched together.
"No, it's fine. We'll go to... brunch."
