The girls were basically on their fifth shot by the time they settled into the party. There were so many people there, especially because the men's and women's basketball team had won their game. So, the celebration was due.
The beat of a Brent Faiyaz song buzzed through the house as Robin placed the cup of God knows what up to her lips. She watched as the college kids danced around her, smiling at her best friend who drunkenly talked to one of the girls from the women's basketball team.
"Congratulations on the win tonight." Harper said to the player, holding her forearm, "I saw you scored like 21 points this game."
The girl looked at Harper with an amused smirk, "Oh, so you were keeping up with my stats?"
Harper smiled confidently, "Yeah, I like to know my shit when I'm talking to people I want."
Aubrey Griffin was one of the players on the team that Harper had her eyes on since last year when she watched her play. While she would never have the confidence to do this soberly, so she allowed the liquor to give her the courage to do it tonight. What better moment than the party celebrating their win?
"I like that 'bout you." Aubrey said, pulling Harper closer. Robin only smirked, mouthing to her friend that she was about to go look around the party and her friend subtly nodded. She knew how long she'd been waiting for the moment to approach the girl, so Robin did not want to interfere with whatever was going on between them.
Robin fluffed out her curly hair as she walked through the house party. The music was extremely loud, but it was okay with her since they were playing all of her favorite songs. The heartbreak was slowly leaving her system due to the alcohol, but suddenly came back as she watched Miles and Celeste walk into the party hand in hand.
The familiar tightness in her chest returned as she stared at the couple. How was he going to hard launch this relationship and it had not even been twenty four hours since they broke up? Did he even care how it made them look? How it would make Robin look?
Miles had no shame as he flaunted Celeste around as if she were his arm piece. She watched as his teammates walked up to them, dapping Miles up and congratulating him. The same teammates who claimed to love Robin like a sister.
Robin turned around, feeling the hot tears begin to build up in her eyes. She didn't want to cry. Not in front of all of these people, plus, she did her makeup so pretty. She did not understand why she thought that she would have the balls to go out the same day she'd found out she'd been cheated on. She wanted so desperately to push the feelings of uselessness away and to channel peace, but she could not.
Instead, she sped walked up the stairs, pushing past everyone who was in her way. She didn't care. She would have hated it if anyone saw her in a vulnerable state. She felt embarrassed. She knew that people would be talking about this, I mean who wouldn't?
Robin Ali, starter on the UCONN Volleyball team, gets dumped by Miles Davis, starter on the UCONN Men's Basketball team, for Celeste Deem, head Cheer Captain for the Huskies.
This breakup was going to be messy, sending her unwanted attention from most of the sports fans at UCONN. She wanted nothing more than to be out of the limelight. She even hated when she'd get highlighted for her games as an athlete. She hated the attention.
But now, it was inevitable.
Robin pushed into what seemed like a bathroom and immediately grabbed tissue to dry her eyes. She didn't give a fuck about anything, all she wanted to do was fix her makeup. After years of giving Miles her all, she'd gotten toyed with. He was no better than any other man. Did she not learn from her father?
That thought crossed her mind, causing her heart to beat faster against her chest. Thoughts of her father's actions began to blur her mind as she compared him to all of the other failures in her life. It was as if men were repulsed by her. Or as if she had a sign above her that said, "mistreat me!" How could she expect anyone to love her when her own father didn't?
Her breathing started to speed up, chest becoming tighter. Warm tears spilled out of her eyes and onto her perfectly smooth makeup. She couldn't help it. There was a panic attack coming. Her fingers gripped the side of the counter as she tried to focus on her breathing, but nothing helped. Suddenly the sound of the party began to be muffled and the sound of her heart pounding flooded her hearing. The liquor was fucking with her head. Images of her father began appearing in her mind alongside the pictures of Miles and Celeste together.
Robin slid to sit down on the cool tile of the bathroom as she held her chest. That feeling of abandonment was slowly returning, causing her breathing to come out faster. She couldn't help it. For some reason, she was just not good enough.
Why wasn't she good enough? Why could no one see the good in her?
The door then opened, and someone walked in. Robin couldn't even mutter the words 'get out' because her breathing was out of control. The person grabbed her face, and Robin, so desperately, wanted them to go away. She did not want them to see her like this. The person's cold hands sent electricity through her body. They began telling her to slow her breath intake, and Robin tried to focus in on the person's blue orbs and mock their breathing.
"Come on, love, deep breaths for me. Like this." The person then demonstrated and asked her to do the same thing. This eventually got her breathing under control. They removed their hands from her face, causing the feeling of the sparks to go away immediately.
Grabbing a tissue, she began dabbing under Robin's eyes, attempting to fix the mascara streaks that were on her face. Once she regained her focus, she was taken off guard. She recognized the person helping her as Paige Bueckers, one of the players on the Women's Basketball Team. Embarrassment immediately came upon Robin as she put her hands over her face.
No way she'd just had a fucking panic attack in front of the star athlete of this school. Paige forced Robin to put her hands down, holding them between her cold ones, this caused Robin to hesitantly look up.
"Are you okay, beautiful?" Paige asked, concern laced in her eyes as she looked at the woman in front of her. While she'd initially had to pee, the urge went away when she saw the volleyball player having a panic attack.
She recognized her from being with Miles, which she couldn't believe. They were so different. While Robin was a presumably sweetheart, Miles was a douchebag. Paige could only have assumed that this attack was because of him.
Robin only nodded in response, not trusting her voice at all. There were more tears that threatened to fall as she looked at Paige. She'd never been so vulnerable in front of anyone besides Harper and her mother. But, for some reason, she felt comfortable around the basketball player.
Paige didn't ask anymore questions as she embraced the girl, pulling her into her arms and allowing her to cry. She didn't know what was going on but she had the sudden desire to beat the hell out of whoever made her feel this way. She soothingly stroked her back until the tears stopped, and pulled away.
"This is so embarrassing." The girl muttered, looking down at her hands and shaking her head. "I'm sorry."
Paige shook her head, and pulled her chin up so they could look at one another, "You don't have to be sorry. There's no reason to apologize or feel embarrassed."
Robin looked at her, thankful that she'd been there to help her through this.
"Thank you, I owe you big time." She said, still staring at the woman, who only chuckled.
"No problem, I'm glad I came when I did." She said, standing up and reaching her hand out to help Robin up, "I recognize you from the volleyball team. What's your name?"
She gladly took her hand and stood to her feet, "Robin,"
And for some reason, which neither of them knew, Paige erupted into a song, "Pretty little bird, pretty little bird!"
This caused Robin to burst out into laughter after hearing Paige's horrible singing voice and being confused as to why she'd even tried to sing SZA's song in the first place.
"Y'know, because your name is Robin, and Robin is a bird? And you're pretty?" She said, smiling as she tried to make sense of her singing.
"Right.." Robin said, still laughing, "You're Paige, right?"
"Yeah,"
"I'm sorry we had to meet under these circumstances. I hope I didn't scare you away," she mumbled, avoiding making eye contact.
"I told you not to apologize, Robin. We all have these moments and I'm just glad that I was here to help you through it. Do you want to talk about what caused it?"
Robin immediately shook her head, not wanting to think about what had just happened. She much rather go back downstairs and resume her drinking and dancing. She wanted to forget Miles and Celeste. She wanted to forget all of those feelings she'd had a second ago.
"I much rather just go back downstairs and party some more." Robin said, totally wanting to avoid the conversation that felt like they needed to have. After all, she did just help her overcome one of the worst attacks she ever had.
Paige chuckled, "I'm cool with that,"
After taking around five minutes to fix the makeup that ran down her face, Paige led Robin down the stairs and towards where her teammates were at. They all turned their heads towards them with an intrigued look on their faces. The girl that their teammate was bringing over was extremely beautiful.
"Y'all," she said to them, quickly licking her lips, "this is Robin, Robin these are my teammates."
The girls smiled brightly at the volleyball player, immediately making her feel welcomed. They could tell that she was on edge, and wanted to make sure that she felt comfortable.
"This is KK, loud ass," she said pointing to a shorter girl who wore a big smile on her face. She was standing beside the bar, mixing some kind of alcoholic concoction together.
"Hey, girly pop!" She shouted, immediately making Robin giggle at her excitement.
"This is Azzi, Ice, Nika," she said, pointing to three beautiful women sitting on the counter of the kitchen, "and Aubrey is somewhere around here."
"It's nice to meet you guys." She said, giving them a warm smile.
"That red looks so good on you," Azzi said, admiring the girl's cute outfit. It consisted of a matching satin red top and skirt set and she paired them with some cute dunks. The color allowed the woman to look vibrant in the dimly lit party.
"Thank you," she said, a blush forming on her cheeks because of the complement.
"Do you want something else to drink? We got Pink Whitney, Hen, Fireball, and some seltzers." Ice said, hopping down from the counter and showing her their collection of alcohol.
"I'll just grab a seltzer, thank you."Â She said, taking the alcohol from the girl and looking at her. Robin had already known Ice because they competed a little in volleyball together.
"Oh my goodness, I literally knew I recognized you! Ice, we literally competed against each other in Club Volleyball in high school!" Robin beamed.
"Oh my goodness, yes! Your team always whooped our asses. I literally dreaded playing you, dude." Ice said, giving Robin a small hug.
"I'm surprised we didn't realize we went to the same school earlier. It's so good to see you! I knew I recognized you!"
The girls chatted for a moment, catching up with one another, until Aubrey and Harper finally joined them where they were sitting.
"There's Aubrey!" KK said, pointing over to the girl, who was standing closely next to Harper, "Uh oh, who's this, B?"
"This is Harper, I see y'all already met Robin." Aubrey said, gesturing towards the girl who sat next to Ice and Paige.
"Let's take some shots!" KK yelled, causing everyone to agree and grab some liquor. The two girls seemed to click with the basketball players almost immediately. Throughout the night, they continued to share laughs as KK and Harper bickered over who could drink the most alcohol. While both girls were making a fool out of themselves, they were unintentionally bringing the group of women closer together.
As of right now, Robin was watching as Harper took another shot of Pink Whitney with KK, and she shook her head. She knew that her best friend would wake up with one of the biggest headaches in the morning, but she allowed her to have her fun. Luckily, the party was a walk away from their athletic dorms, so getting back home would be no problem.
"Hey," Paige said, causing Robin to tear her eyes away from the girls, "I wanted to check in, and make sure you're still good."
Robin smiled kindly, appreciating the girl's concern, "Yeah, I'm fine. I guess I was just overwhelmed by something that happened earlier, but I'm fine now, thanks to you."
"That's good to hear," she responded, "I wanted to let you know that whatever it may have been to cause you to be in that state is not deserving of your attention if it's going to make you feel like this. You have some type of brightness within you, Robin, and I'm not just saying that to say it. Do not allow minor setbacks like this to steal your joy or dim your light."
"Thank you. I didn't know that you were so wise."
"There's a lot more to me than my looks," she said, popping her imaginary collar, "and I am willing to share all of it with you."
