Chapter 13: The Tower of Unwritten Paths

THE KEY TO ME (english)1,947 words~10 min read

The step through the portal is a perfect dissolution. There is no movement, no pull, no swirling colors. For the fraction of a second, I cease to exist. There is no Mark, no body, no thoughts—only pure, white, conscious being without form and without time. It is not frightening. It is the ultimate silence, purer than at the Mirror Lake, more peaceful than at the Inn. It is the feeling of coming home for an infinitely brief moment.

As gently as I dissolved, I am gently reassembled. I am standing on solid ground. The feeling of Elara's presence at my side returns, a calming anchor as she, too, takes form again. We look at each other, and in her eyes, I see the same wordless astonishment at the experience we have just shared.

We are in a place that pushes my mind to its limits.

We find ourselves inside a tower of impossible size. It has no visible outer walls; instead, we are surrounded by an infinite, gently glowing expanse reminiscent of the golden shimmer of the archive, but much brighter and more ethereal. The tower itself seems to extend upward and downward without beginning or end. In its center floats a colossal pillar of soft, mother-of-pearl light, which is the only constant light source.

But what is truly astonishing is the structure of the tower itself. There are no conventional floors. Instead, countless bridges, stairs, walkways, and floating platforms wind around the central pillar of light in a chaotic yet strangely harmonious spiral. They are made of a shimmering, milky-white material that looks like solidified light. And every single one of these structures is unfinished. An elegant bridge ends abruptly in the void. A wide staircase dissolves into soft mist after twenty steps. A floating platform flickers at the edge as if it isn't entirely real.

Each of these unfinished paths pulsates with a quiet, palpable energy. It is the energy of pure possibility.

"Incredible," I whisper, feeling completely lost in the face of this architecture of potential.

"This is it," Elara says with reverence. "The unwritten paths. The decisions that have not yet been made. The futures that are still possible."

The Tower of Unwritten Paths. A place that seems to consist of pure, unrealized future. It is a place of infinite hope and, at the same time, of crushing responsibility. Every single one of these shimmering paths represents a possibility, a different course for history.

We are standing on a stable, round platform, our point of arrival. From here, three unfinished paths lead away. A narrow walkway that ends in nothingness after a few feet. A broad, descending staircase that dissolves into mist after a short distance. And a small, floating disc that seems to be slowly drifting toward a more distant platform.

"And how are we supposed to know which path to take now?" I ask. "Is there some kind of universal navigation system for destiny?"

Elara steps to the edge of our arrival point and looks at the narrow walkway that ends in the void before her. "I don't think we're meant to choose a path," she says thoughtfully. "I think we have to create it. Or rather… complete it."

She takes a hesitant step onto the unfinished walkway. The moment her foot touches the surface, the walkway glows more brightly. But it does not extend. It remains as incomplete as before. She steps back again.

"Okay, so not like that," I observe. "Maybe it needs a specific kind of… impetus?"

I think back to our last lesson in the archive. The Seal of Shared Intent. It wasn't about the power of an individual, but about the resonance between us.

"Elara," I say. "What if the tower reacts to the same kind of energy as the crystal wall? What if a path only completes itself when we both step onto it with a clear, shared intent?"

Her expression brightens. "That… that feels right. It is the next lesson. We learned how to open a path. Now we must learn to walk it together."

We look at the three unfinished paths. The descending staircase doesn't feel right, like a step backward. The floating disc seems aimless, passive. But the narrow walkway, leading directly into the luminous expanse… it feels like a step forward.

"Let's try the walkway," I suggest. "What's our intent? Simply 'forward'?"

"Perhaps it needs to be more specific," Elara muses. "What does this step represent? We have just left a place of pure truth. Perhaps the next step is to apply that truth? To put it into action?"

Transforming clarity into action. That makes a strange but profound kind of sense.

"Okay," I say, feeling a new resolve. "Our shared intent is: we walk this path to manifest the recognition we have gained in the next world."

It sounds pretentious, almost ridiculous, when I say it out loud. But Elara nods seriously. "That's it. Feel it."

We stand side by side at the beginning of the unfinished walkway. We are not holding hands, but our shoulders are almost touching. I close my eyes, focusing on the feeling of clarity that the Mirror-splinter has anchored within me. I think of Elara's quiet strength, of our shared power with which we restored harmony in the caves. Our intent becomes a silent, clear thought that we both share.

Then, in the same moment, as if we had received an invisible signal, we take the first step onto the walkway.

The effect is instantaneous. The walkway beneath our feet becomes more solid, its light more brilliant. And before us, out of thin air, the next section of the path materializes, connecting seamlessly to the one on which we stand. It is as if the tower is reading our shared intent and preparing the way for us, step by step.

We walk on, and with each shared step, a new section of the walkway forms before us. It is an incredible feeling of power and responsibility. As long as we are in harmony, as long as our intent is clear, the path is safe. But I also feel how fragile this balance is. A moment of doubt, a spark of disagreement between us, and the path before us would probably vanish back into nothingness.

As we walk across our self-created path, we notice the other unfinished ways floating around us. And on some of them, we see fleeting, ghostly images, as if they were projections of possibilities.

I see a bridge on which another Mark stands. One who never found the key. He has quit his job, is sitting in a park, drawing in a sketchbook. He doesn't look happy in an ecstatic sense, but he seems… content. At peace with himself. A pang of longing for that simplicity shoots through me.

Beside me, Elara flinches slightly as well. I look at her questioningly. "I saw… a garden," she whispers. "My garden. But it was completely consumed by the shadows. And I was sitting alone in its center."

The temptation to get lost in these images, in the "what ifs," is strong. But the Mirror-splinter in my pocket seems to radiate a cool clarity, reminding me of what the innkeeper said: what is real is what you feel now. And what I feel now is the solid path beneath my feet and Elara's present strength beside me.

"They're just possibilities," I say, more to myself than to her. "Echoes of choices not made. They are not our reality."

"You're right," she says, shaking off the barely perceptible sadness. "Our reality is this path here."

Our walkway leads us to a large, central platform that acts like a hub in a giant wheel. From here, dozens of new, unfinished paths lead off in all directions. It is overwhelming. But our gaze is captured by the path leading upward, toward the luminous heart of the tower, which appears much closer and larger here.

Here, at this great crossroads, the paths seem to have archetypal qualities. A broad, solid path radiates an energy of order and stability. Another, winding and colorful, vibrates with creativity and chaos. A third, almost invisible walkway of pure light seems to lead directly to the heart of knowledge.

"We have to decide," Elara says. "What kind of future do we want to create? What energy do we want to nurture next?"

I look at the paths. The path of order and stability speaks to a part of me, the part that longs for security, for a firm foundation. But I also feel Elara's gaze resting on the creative, chaotic path, which seems full of life and unpredictable possibilities.

Our intentions are no longer the same. And I feel the solid ground beneath our feet begin to wobble slightly.

"I… the stable path feels safe," I admit.

"But it also feels rigid," she replies gently. "And the creative path… it could lead to chaos."

Here we stand, at our first true fork in the road. Not just a puzzle to be solved, but a fundamental decision about our shared direction. A conflict.

"I'm afraid of chaos," I say honestly. "My whole life has been chaotic enough. I long for something solid."

"And I am afraid of stagnation," she answers, just as honestly. "A life without growth, for me, is like a garden without blossoms."

We look at each other. And in this moment of potential conflict, something important happens. I feel no resentment, no impatience. Only her honest admission. And she seems to see the same in me. We don't want to argue against each other. We want to find a solution.

"What if it doesn't have to be one or the other?" I say slowly. "What if we don't take her path or my path? But our path?" I think of the seal we created, how it united our two natures. "What is the synthesis of stability and creativity? Of foundation and growth?"

Elara looks at me, and a deep understanding shines in her eyes. "Steady growth," she says. "Creativity that is rooted in a strong foundation. Creation that doesn't drift into chaos, but follows an intent."

"Purposeful creation," I nod. That feels right. That feels like us.

We turn our gaze back to the paths, but we no longer look at the pre-made ways. We look at the empty space between them. We close our eyes. Our new, shared intent is clear: we are not seeking stability or chaos. We are seeking the path of conscious, grounded creation.

We project this will, this shared, synthesized truth, into the empty space before us.

And the Tower responds.

Out of nothing, between the rigid, stable path and the chaotic, creative one, a new path begins to grow. It is made of the same luminous material, but its form is unique. It winds upward in gentle, elegant curves, creative and full of life, but its base, every single step that appears before us, is broad and solid. It is a perfect fusion of our two desires.

We open our eyes and gaze in wonder at the path we have brought into existence together.

"I think," Elara says with a soft laugh, "we're learning this pretty quickly."

With a new kind of certainty, born not from choosing a given path but from creating our own, we step onto the first stair. It is firm and secure beneath our feet. The path winds upward before us, directly toward the luminous, mother-of-pearl heart of the tower. We are ready to see what lies at the end of the path that we ourselves have written.
