"He ruffled your hair?" Henry asked unsure.
I was sitting in the cafeteria with them as I nodded my head at him enthusiastically.
I was just telling them about how things went at Alec's place, from the point I entered his house to me hitting him with notebook (Excluding his mother's death part).
"It's cute, isn't it?" I asked with a grin on my face.
The both of them looked at me weirdly before I saw Max leaning in a little. Bringing the back of his hand to my forehead he tried checking my temperature. I smacked his hand away before muttering at him.
"What?" I asked frustrated.
He passed his hand through his ginger hairâ stifling his laugh. I turned my gaze to Henry hoping that he will understand me but he just smiled sympathetically at me, shaking his head.
"Just say it out loud for god's sake. Stop giving me those looks." I rolled my eyes sinking back in my seat.
"Are you a dog?" Max asked me out of nowhere. He was still trying not to laugh.
I could almost feel myself falling off my seat. Taking the grip of the table I sat straight.
"A-a dog? Why?" I asked looking around unbelievably.
Max nodded his head at me closing his eyes momentarily, "Yes, a dog. Don't you think you just got treated like one?"
This was just wrong. Why would he think of me as a dog? How was I treated like one? What is going on?
"How?"
"Alec ruffled your hair for every answer you got right. Just like a dog is petted after every time he does a trick right. Isn't that the same?" He finally burst out laughing followed by Henry.
I sat there numb trying to absorb everything he just sputtered out of his mouth. I wasn't liking the fact that they just compared me with a dog! I am pretty sure that's not how Alec meant it either! It's just the two of these wicked men sharing same brain cells who are brewing stupid ideas in their heads. Yes. That's the case.
"A-and," Henry said trying to control his laughter and looking at Max, "She thinks it's cute, just like a dog loves it." He burst out laughing with Max again. They banged their hands on the table trying to catch their breaths while I sat there with a poker face just staring at the two of them.
I looked around our table and I could see people near us looking at us as if we have gone mad. Ignoring them, I looked back at the two idiots in front of me completely loosing it right now.
It's not funny. I wish I could tell them that it WAS cute. Is that how they pay me for being nice to them? I didn't laugh at Henry when he came to me saying how cute it was just because Max lend him a pen. A freaking pen.
I couldn't take it anymore. I slammed my hands on the table getting both of their attention.
"Max?" I said sweetly.
He hummed in response while trying to compose himself.
"Do you want me to narrate your embarrassing incident to everyone?" I asked with a mocking smile.
In a blink of an eye he caught onto what I was talking about. Even Henry knew what I was talking about because it looked like he could burst into another series of laughter any second.
The infamous Max incident in the cafe a few days back.
"Now Serene," Max said trying to sound persuasive, "it's not right that you play it dirty, is it?"
"Who started it?" I asked innocently.
"Let's stop it here, okay?" He asked cautiously.
I threw a crumb of bread towards him before nodding my head at him. Let's stop it.
"Serene?"
As soon as I heard my name I looked up and saw Olivia standing there with her tray of food in hands. She walked towards me and stood in front of the table, softly smiling.
"Can I join you guys?" She asked sweetly looking at me and then at Max and Henry.
My eyes automatically went to Max and Henry to know what they thought. Personally, I didn't mind because Olivia was already very sweet and trying to help me in chemistry. But it was just right to ask Max and Henry if they were comfortable enough to have someone else.
They nodded at me in a reassuring way. I couldn't help but smile excitedly as I turned to Olivia.
"Sure! Take a seat." I took a chair out for her as she thanked me before sitting down.
She turned towards me, "I was thinking that we should meet together after school so we can study together and try to cover the syllabus you missed."
"I-I would love to and I really appreciate it." I couldn't help but feel guilty, "but someone already doing that now."
Or forced me to study from him because he wants to take it into his own hands and because of his love for the subject. I didn't want her to be disappointed but again if only she was there that day we could have been partners.
"Oh." I could sense the disappointment in her voice but she covered it as quickly, "It's alright, we can definitely hang out together though, right?"
"Yeah. Definitely. We should."
She smiled contently before digging into her food while I did the same. I looked up at Max and Henry and found them looking at me proudly.
God damn their minds. Why do we have this telepathic connection? Why do I know everything they are thinking just by looking at their expressions. Couldn't they try concealing it a little that they were proud of me for making a friend which was not them.
"Serenity?" I heard a voice all too similar.
Seems like people are loving my name these days. I put on a smile on my face and looked at Alec. He gave me his signature smile before he started walking towards me.
"I was thinking that we should," he trailed off as his eyes turned from me and settled on Olivia who was next to me. The smile he had on his face was completely gone. And the eyes which had a spark in them just turned as cold as the colour of his eyes as he stared at Olivia.
"What are you doing here?" He asked sternly. Not moving an inch from his place.
I was confused by the change in his behaviour. Why was he like this suddenly? Why did he seem angry?
Instinctively, I got up from the seat and tried blocking his view. He looked at me automatically but I could still feel the coldness in them. And I wasn't liking it.
"Get out of my way, Serenity." He gritted his teeth.
Of course he was taller than me so he could see Olivia directly.
"What are you doing here?" He asked coldlyâhis eyes not moving away from Olivia.
I felt a shiver run down my spine upon hearing his voice but I continued standing in front of him, stopping him from going anywhere near Olivia because I was having a bad feeling about it.
Olivia stood up from here seat slowly and came towards us. I could feel her just behind me as she sighed and put her hand on my shoulder assuring me it was alright to step away.
I stepped away a little so that they were facing each other.
"I think I have been guilty enough for a long time now. Let's not bring it up again." She said trying to sound mature.
"What are you doing here?" He asked repeating himself and ignoring whatever she said.
Olivia looked around before meeting Alec's glare head on, "Trying to make friends."
"Ha." Alec said in a mocking way, "Do you think you deserve that after what you did?"
I could see Olivia taking in a sharp breath, "I already told you I feel guilty about it."
"Then act like it. You know you can't deserve to be someone's friend after what you did." He stated coldly.
"I am staying away from you guys. Do the same with me. Stop interfering." I could hear her voice getting strong.
I don't know what was going on. I didn't know what they were talking about. But it did seem serious. What did Olivia exactly do?
Alec suddenly turned to me and with the same cold eyes he asked, "Why?"
Looking into his eyes like that I could hear the rest of his question. Why her? When it could have been anyone why did it have to be her?
"Because she is my friend." I replied.
I could see the pain in his eyes.
"Not her." He shook his head at me softly.
"Why?"
"BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT SHE DID!" He suddenly burst out.
I was taken aback. Why did he just yell at me? I just asked him the reason to not be friends with her. Why did he have to yell at me like that?
"WHATEVER SHE DID, I DON'T CARE! SHE IS KIND TO ME." I yelled back at him.
By now, our side of the cafeteria was silent.
"She was kind to her too." Alec said, his eyes looking tired.
"Who?"
By now call it an intuitive or anything but I could see it coming. The name of the person Alec was going to say.
"Liya." He whispered.
I felt myself clenching my jaw. I don't know why. But hearing her name automatically made me not think clear.
Why? Why her? Always. Why does it seem like everything is about her? Why does it seem like everything revolves around her? A fight? It's her. A broken heart of a guy? Her.
"She was kind to her too," he continued, "but she still hurt Liya in the worst way possible. That's why I am saying stay away from her." He looked hurt even thinking about what Liya went through.
So he doesn't want me to be friends with Olivia because she did something bad to Liya. Why should I break my friendship for something she did to Liya? Why should I listen to him? What right does he have to choose whom I can be friends with.
Besides people change. Olivia feels guilty about it. She said it herself.
"I choose my friends however I want." I said sternly.
Alec stared at me blankly before running his hands through his hair, "Not her! I just told you!"
"YOU DON'T GET TO DECIDE WHO I SHOULD BE FRIENDS WITH!" I said agitated.
I don't know why I yelled. Was it because I was sick of hearing Liya's name all day? Or was it because I was sick of seeing him hurt because of Liya? Or was it both?
I could see him clenching his hands into a fist trying to control his anger as he dashed of the cafeteria without saying any other word.
