After Micah discussed with Abby, they both decided to keep the news about her pregnancy a secret from everyone else. Even though they both understood how important a piece of news this was to the whole kingdom, especially since all of their people had been waiting for the kingâs firstborn, who was going to inherit the throne next, for quite a while now.
This was in no way a small or trivial matter, but Micah still felt it wasnât as serious as protecting Abby and their yet to be born baby. With that matter pushed to the backs of their minds, Micah urged the healers to help Abby recover as soon as possible.
Surprisingly, even his little stubborn mate, who would always complain about taking bitter medicine, didnât make a fuss and focused on recuperating as soon as possible.
âYou have changed so much.â Micah couldnât help but grimace one evening, when he saw her almost choking on the bitter medicine.
She quickly stuffed the candied fruit Micah prepared for her before turning her eyes to her mate.
She had been actively asking for her meals and medicines to be taken care of timely, which was truly unlike her.
âYes, because I want to regain my previous vigor and more,â Abby said, her eyes flashed with this sudden look of determination. âWhy are you looking at me like that?â
âI know what you are thinking, but you really donât have to get involved anymoreâ¦â Micahâs voice trailed off when his little one glared at him. Even though she was concerned about the baby and came forward to cultivate her health, she was also focusing on things he believed he could handle alone just fine.
âWe already talked about this.â Her tone conveyed that she wouldnât back down from her decision.
âAnd, we decided we would do this together, long back.â
âI know, but I donât think you need to exert yourself, especially given your current condition.â The King still tried to persuade her.
âThatâs why I suggested that I will work remotely,â Abby asserted, wiping her lips, feeling a little repulsed by the strong taste in her mouth. âSo I wonât need to go anywhere.â
âSending Mirella to investigate on your behalf was indeed effective, but do you need to rush so much like this?â The king should agree, his little mate was even more stubborn than himself.
âYes, because no one will wait for us to prepare fully before attacking us.â Abby was adamant, and the king could only give up.
They had been having this conversation almost every other two hours since Abby woke up, and the answer he got was always the same. But he still tried one last time to talk her out of it.
âWhy do you need to investigate that groove anyway?â Micah couldnât understand this part. âYou said that place spooked you out.â
Abby told him the strangeness of that place. But he didnât understand why she thought it wouldnât be as simple as them accidentally landing there.
âPrecisely because of that,â Abby said, but then she didnât know how to explain her actual reasons.
âThat place reeked of something really strange, there was both dark and normal magic there.â
But it didnât make any sense to even herself, let alone to Micah, who wasnât really knowledgeable about magic.
Both normal magic and dark magic at the same place? Was it even possible?
âOnce Mirella returns, she will elaborate on the situation.â Abby sounded sure.
In fact, she regretted why she didnât think of asking Mirella to take a look when she found Abby and Micah with the assistance of the royal gamma and the others there.
She was too occupied then, her mind was filled with getting Micah medical help as soon as possible, and those ominous rusty gates slipped from her mind. Only after deciding to restart investigating the strange deaths in the Silver Moon pack did she remember that groove again.
And she immediately asked Mirella for this favor.
âThen at least relax until she does,â Micah coaxed her, but he was in for a disappointment because Abbyâs next statement stressed that she had other plans, those that didnât include rest or sleep.
âNo, I will continue assisting you in gathering information on Calpin.â
That crazy fucker was still on the lose, while they had already been silent for around two weeks already. She didnât believe he didnât realize what transpired during her so-called reunion with her father.
âRyan not going back to report would be suspicious enough to him, he will strike soon.â She wasnât making up these from thin air, but after observing his attack patterns. âHe always tries to attack after baiting us with a distraction. So we must be prepared and do everything to prevent him from succeeding.â
âWill you be at ease if I say I already get enough assistance from Dax and Alpha Samuel?â Micah probed one last time.
âThey donât understand how magic works, Micah.â
This was enough to stop him from coming up with excuses for Abby to continue resting. He could only sigh. âOkay, you are not to leave this study until I give a pass, though.â
The guest bedroom where she was treated had been turned into a study, so that she could summon various pack members for investigation. With Mirella away, it was Dax who was assisting her for the time being.
âMicah, Abby!â Dax arrived just as they finished talking.
âI think thatâs my cue to dive into work.â Abby almost clapped her hands, but her brow furrowed when she realized the royal gamma came alone.
Then she saw the two men exchange a glance, before Micah turned toward her. âLittle one, Dax wants to talk about something, wait for me while I see what he needs, okay?â
Micah only stepped out of the room after his queen nodded her assent for him to leave, even though she felt something was off with that chatterbox called Dax. He was too quiet just now.
*********************
When Dax requested a private audience with Micah, the king didnât imagine that the news awaiting him would be something that could make his blood boil with rage.
He and his gamma shifted to the strategy room of this pack house to have this conversation, and now the king was leaning on the long table while his gamma was standing before him.
âItâs not even two weeks since I ordered you that not even Alan should find out about this matter, but it still made it back all the way to the capital somehow?â Micah couldn't believe his ears, as he gripped the edge of the table âYes, Micah!â Dax was also furious, this would bring so many changes to their plans. âThis bastard is someone really sneaky.â
âWhat is the actual situation there?â Micah couldnât help asking, because Daxâs tone indicated that the matter was not as simple as just leaking news about the queenâs pregnancy.
âActually, the whole capital was filled with a festive mood at first, but then some other rumors started flying around randomlyâ¦â
âWhat rumors?â Micah felt a little uneasy at the word.
âThisâ¦â Dax hesitated a bit before deciding it was best to let him read the missive himself. âHere, I think you should read it yourself.â
Micah didnât waste a second to go through the missive, but the longer he read, the redder his eyes became.
âHow dare they!â Micah roared as he slammed the small paper on the table behind him, almost breaking it in half in his rage.
âCalm down, Micah!â Dax tried to calm him down.
âYou read what they were saying and you are asking me to calm down?â Micah roared, as he breathed harshly. âAsk Alan to investigate who started the rumors. I want all the names, Dax.â
âYes, my king!â Dax bowed to take the order before Micah dismissed him saying he wanted to be alone for a moment. âDonât seek the Queen, I need to talk to her first.â
Micah tried to reign in his temper, but the letter seemed like a nasty scourge in his eyes, fueling his anger further until he felt like ripping it into shreds.
âI wonât let anyone, who dared to slander her, off.â He promised to himself, almost crushing the cheap excuse of a paper.
Later that evening, just when Abby started to contemplate whether she should go searching for Micah and Dax herself, her mate finally returned to her side.
âWhat took you so long?â Abby asked him impatiently, but when she looked behind him, she couldnât find Dax this time. âIt is already getting dark, we still need to talk to a few people, where is Dax?â
âLittle one, come here and read this,â Micah suddenly called her out, and his voice told her that he was conflicted about something.
âWhat is it?â Abby skipped to him but her entire demeanor changed after reading the first few lines.
âHow did the news get out there?â
âContinue readingâ¦â Micah had a hard time saying these two words, he knew she would be heartbroken but he promised he would never hide anything from her again.
âT- this⦠this is absurd.â Abby felt her legs give away as she collapsed onto the sofa behind her.
âNo, no.. this is not true⦠how could they say those things about me?â
âLittle one,â Micah tried to reach her, when he saw that she was spiraling from the shock. She kept shaking her head while repeating the same thing over and over again.
âMicah, say you donât believe this. You donât believe it, right?â Abbyâs eyes were filled with unshed stubborn tears to the brim, as she looked like a puppy that had just been kicked hard. âNo, you mustnât believe anything in this. I wouldnât do that to you.â
She almost flinched when Micah reached over to pull her into his lap. âItâs just me, little one, donât be afraid.â
Abby felt like she was back to those days in her dark past, where people always found fault with her no matter what she did. It was always fun for them to make false accusations on her and bully her, with her older sisterâs support.
Now the letter seemed like a portal to another such type of situation, where the entire capital was boiling over the rumors that she had committed adultery.
âNo, Micah, itâs not trueâ¦â Abby started shaking again, but this time Micah gently kissed her to stop her from overthinking, because he knew his mate really well.
âI believe you, so relax first.â Micah said, when he finally sensed that the girl was calm enough to realize that he wasnât here to blame her.
And immediately, the tears she had been holding back started flowing down her cheeks. âI really don't have anything to do with him, I sincerely treated him as my brother, but they created such nasty rumors. I feel disgusted.â
Micahâs arms tightened around her waist. âYou were just not cunning enough.â
Had she been cunning enough, the situation wouldnât have escalated to this point.
Now, the entire capital was roaring that she cuckolded the king with Ezgar, as there were quite a few people who claimed that they spotted the queen with the cheater several times, alone.
All those times she seeked warmth from a brother like person looked like stages of a clandestine affair, and it didnât stop there.
âMicah, Iâm carrying your baby, you shouldnât sway with their words.â
The king felt his blood boil with rage, when he heard her words. They were actually saying the baby wasnât his.
He didnât know how the word got out, but they didnât spare Abby any mercy at all, because now they were connecting the exemption of Leonâs family to Abby.
The rumors of Abby begging the king to spare Ezgarâs mother and sister joined this fray, acting as fuel to support the rumors of their affair.
It was truly a mess now, and the people who started this couldnât even imagine what hit them when Micah finally took action. He would show them hell, he swore on his life!
