She recognized me and she hugged me.
She started to cry as I pulled her close and I knew I couldn't let her down.
I wanted to apologize,
to tell her I'm sorry for all she's been through, but she disappeared before I could even say a word.
I wanted to love her a little longer or hold her.
I knew I couldn't ever hurt the girl that was compressed into my chest.
I couldn't find it in me to show her even a bit of distaste.
I wanted to tell her that I'm here for her.
That her life gets worse before it gets better but it does get better.
The words I wanted to say to the poor girl.
I wanted to hold her longer, comfort her and reassure her.
I couldn't let her down.
I can't let her down because she needs me most.
The little girl was me.
As she stood hugging me, I knew I had to protect this girl because she means so much to me.
I forgot about her for so long and it saddens me.
I tried helping everyone around me that I forgot about her in the corner.
I forgot that she's needed me this whole time and all I've given her is neglect.
I'm sorry I let you down.
