âWait⦠if Iâve killed so many⦠what did I get?â
Ariel furrowed his brows and summoned the runes.
They flickered to life in the silence of his mindâeach glowing faintly like embers in the dark:
-[ Echoes of Origin ]-
[ ⢠Rank â 0 (Dormant?) ]
[ ⢠Origin Ability â The Void? ]
[ ⢠Origin Attributes â Empty Vessel? ]
[ ⢠Echoes Collected â 938 ]
[ ⢠Soul Core â Dormant? ]
Ariel blinked, confused. He let go of the vision, and the runes vanished like breath on a cold window.
âDoctor⦠what is this? I donât understand it clearly.â
Walter leaned back, ever the calm storm behind round glasses.
âI didnât expect you to. But itâs easier to teach someone once theyâve seen what theyâre asking about.â
âYeah⦠that does make sense.â Ariel nodded slightly.
Walter gestured lazily toward the ceiling. âFirst thing you sawâyour rank. Youâre Rank 0. Dormant. Everyone starts there. You remember the seven ranks, donât youââ
Before Ariel could reply, Walter turned to the door and lifted the tool of silence with a casual wave of his hand.
A faint knock.
Ariel looked upâand the door creaked open.
A girl stepped through. She had golden hair, soft as sunlit silk, and eyes that shimmered with quiet authority. Her presence didnât belong in a hospital room. It belonged on a stage, or a battlefield.
âAh. I see our foodâs arrived,â Walter said, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. âBut why you, I wonder? Is it an honor, thenâbeing served by the heir of a Great Clan?â
Arenya smiled politely and placed the tray on the empty chair beside the bed.
âItâs nice to meet you, Sir Walter,â she said, then glanced at Ariel. âAnd you.â
Walter tilted his head. âWhat are you doing here, Arenya? Delivering food doesnât seem like something the heir of the Golden Vow Clan should bother with.â
âI told Marik I wanted to meet him,â she said plainly, gesturing toward Ariel.
Walter chuckled. âWell, the timing is impeccable. Care to stay and eat?â

âIâd love to.â She dragged a chair from beneath the old ventilator and sat beside them.
Ariel tensed, eyes narrowing. Something felt⦠off.
âWhy now? What does she want from me? Oh⦠right. Sir Marik said theyâd try to recruit me.â
âWhatâs your name?â she asked, then immediately corrected herself. âAhâmy manners. Iâm Arenya, heir of the Golden Vow Clan. Itâs nice to meet you.â
âAriel,â he replied simply, still watching her carefully.
âArielâ¦â she repeated, musing over it. âLike wind and storms. Fitting. You certainly gave off that feeling the first time I saw you.â She smiled, then picked up her food. âLetâs eat. We can talk after.â
They ate quicklyâthree mouths, two trays, one quiet tension lingering in the air. When they finished, Arenya wiped her lips with a cloth and turned to Walter.
âThank you for the meal, Doctor.â
âDonât mention it. Now⦠why did you want to see Ariel?â
âIâm here to warn him,â she said, her voice suddenly heavier.
Arielâs fork paused mid-air. ââ¦Warn me about what?â
âThat the Great Clans know about you now. All of them. They know what you didâand how exceptional you are.â She sighed. âIâm sorry. I tried to keep it quiet⦠but I couldnât stop them from acting.â
âWe already figured as much. But is that really something to fear? Wouldnât being known by the Great Clans be⦠a good thing?â Ariel asked cautiously.
She stared at him for a moment, then spoke slowly.
âAre you sure you want the truth? Can you handle the consequences of knowing?â
Ariel didnât reply. His silence was answer enough.
She leaned forward. âThereâs a cold war happening between the three clans. Just one push could turn it into an all-out bloodbath. And if you join one of them⦠you will be that push.â
ââ¦Why me?â he muttered. âWhy would my joining change anything? Iâm still just Dormant. Iâm no one special.â
Walter and Arenya laughed togetherâlight, amused, almost sad.
âYou really donât see it, do you?â Walter said.
âYou give yourself too little credit,â Arenya added. âDonât you realize how strange you are? You used Dormant powers no oneâs managed before. You killed a Phase 4 Forsaken monsterâits CI was nearly 0.98. And you did it in under ten seconds, along with everything else in that hellhole.â
âNo Dormant couldâve done that,â Walter said. âNot even most Blessed. Only heirs of the clans could match itâand thatâs because of their vast resources.â
ââ¦CI? Phase?â Ariel frowned. âMarik said something like that too.â
âWaitâhe doesnât know?â Arenya raised an eyebrow.
âI was getting there,â Walter muttered. âBut you crashed the party.â
He turned to Ariel, expression sharpening.
âRemember the corruption I told you about? Dormants using their powers before awakeningâdrawing from the soul power inside them too early? Monsters are also Rank 0. Dormants, like us. But the more corrupted they are, the more powerful they become.â
He paused for effect.
âThe monster you killed had reached Phase 4. That means its Corruption IndexâCIâwas 0.98. It was on the verge of breaching into Rank 3.â
Arielâs mind raced.
âIf you hadnât killed it, it wouldâve evolved. A disaster.â Walter finished.
Arenya nodded. âYouâre not normal, Ariel. And the clans know it. Thatâs why Iâm warning you.â
Walter leaned forward. âAnd you should listen to her. Arenyaâs one of the few decent ones left in the clans.â
Ariel frowned. âFew? Arenât the Great Clans⦠protecting humanity?â
Walter sighed. âIn theory, yes. But let me ask youâhow many elite forces do you think the Clans sent to save this continent?â
âThere should be⦠a lot. Few Pristine , dozens ofTranscendents. Hundreds of Blessed, at least.â
Walter shook his head.
âNo. The combined forces of all three clans amounted to six Transcendents. And a few dozen Blessed. Thatâs it. Just enough to keep up appearances. Arenya is here of her own willâthe rest came only because they had to.â
Arenyaâs voice was gentle, but firm.
âWhich is why I suggest⦠you donât join any of them. Even if their offer sounds sweet. If you do⦠youâll be separated from your sister. Thatâs not a âmaybe,â itâs a promise.â
Ariel stared at the floor, his thoughts drifting like ash in the wind.
He had power now. But power meant attention.
And attention, in this world, came with a price.
