Chapter 19
R&D was the companyâs key department, and the staff werenât usually out and about. Herman didnât call out Casonâs bull when Cason fibbed to protect his dignity because he was not even fit to be Hermanâs rival
Cason fell like he was punching cotton, his efforts fruitless. Seeing the couple standing together in perfect harmony made him feel all sorts of unease. âI donât really know about the R&D department, Cason said, forcing a smile, then continued to probe, âAre you the head of the department?â
âNope.â Herman replied coolly, making Cason seem petty in comparison
If he was not the boss, then he mustâve been a grunt Everyone exchanged looks, their suspicions confirmed Anastasiaâs hubby didnât seem too hot. Just a regular Joe, not on their level at all, just a pretty face
The round table was full, with twenty people in the seats. There was no room for one more. Cason, the party planner, didnât ask for an extra chair when Herman arrived. It was clear Cason was trying to make Herman feel awkward, the old flame meeting the new. No one was going to risk upsetting the successful, upâandâcoming lawyer Cason for a regular company worker.
Seeing Herman being sidelined, Anastasia was upset and angry. She grabbed his hand and said blankly to everyone, âMy husbandâs here to pick me up. so weâre heading out. We donât share the same values, so thereâs no need for us to mingle. Maybe we wonât see each other again.â
The room fell silent.
They disrespected Anastasia, and she returned the favor She had already been uncomfortable when Demi snatched her phone, and now she exploded Herman felt her protection, a hint of warmth in his eyes. This girl was always taking his side.
Anastasia said, and then she said to her teacher, âMs. Sherry, Iâm sorry today. I will find another time to visit youâ
Ms. Sherry noticed something was wrong and smiled, saying, âTake care on the way.â
Seeing Anastasia about to leave, Cason quickly said, âI have a car, Iâll give you a rideâ
Herman declined, âNo need, I drove hereâ
He didnât care about the attitudes of these people, but Anastasia clearly didnât like them either, so there was no need to argue with them.
âThen Iâll drop you off at the entrance, Cason insisted, âI also have something to do, so I can go along with youâ
Casonâs reaction displeased Anastasia. After not seeing each other for many years, she felt that the Cason in front of her had become somewhat unfamiliar and forceful
Demi smiled and said. âTâll walk with you too, Cason, give me a rideâ
Cason called the waiter, paid the bill, and then reluctantly walked with Anastasia and the others.
Herman parked the car in the open parking lot and walked towards it with Anastasia. The headlights of a Maybach turned on nearby Cason approached from behind, opened the door of the Maybach, seemingly showing off, and looked at Anastasia, saying, âAnastasia, let me drive you.â
Anastasia fully understood Casonâs intentions who deliberately flaunted the millionâdollar luxury car he owned.
âNo need,â Anastasia said while looking at Herman, âLetâs go home.â
âWeâre going home, Anastasia said, looking at Herman,
Herman cracked a smile, choosing to ignore Casonâs existence, and opened the car door. âLetâs head home.â
Watching Anastasia get into a regular Chevy, Casonâs face turned sour Herman drove off, leaving Cason with a dark expression. Unable to control his emotions, he kicked the tire. Demi, who followed him out, saw this and laughed. âAnastasiaâs husband seems like a good guy, he treats her well, theyâre a good match.â
Cason sneered, âA poor guy driving a Chevy, how can he make Anastasia happy?â
Hearing this tone, Demi knew Cason wouldnât let it go, he hadnât given up. Demi said, âYou and Anastasia have been apart for years, youâre not getting back to where you left off. Maybe she likes a peaceful life.â
Cason looked in the direction Anastasia had gone and said unwillingly, âEverything depends on the person.â
Demi said in shock, âCason, Anastasia is already marriedâ¦
âThat guy, heâs not good enough for her.â
On the way horpe, Anastasia kept stealing glances at Herman. Hermanâs face was expressionless, not showing any emotion Anastasia hesitated and said, âIâm really sorry, are you mad?â
âNo,â Hermanâshook his head with a smile.
âReally?â Anastasia said. âMy classmates tried to embarrass you earlier, I thought youâd be mad. Iâm really sorry, please donât take it to heart. If youâre angry, you can vent at meâ
Herman was amused by her carefulness. âI really am not, and I didnât take it to heart. I was actually quite happyâ
Cason and the others were not worth Hermans attention.
Anastasia asked in surprise, âHappy?â
Herman smiled and said, âThe way you defended me, you were quite fierce. I didnât expect you to have such a temper
Anastasia was a little embarrassed and laughed awkwardly. âIâm usually very peaceful, I never argue with peopleâ
She wondered, would Herman think she was a shrew?
Herman glanced at her and suddenly asked. That guy from before, was he your exâboyfriend?â
