Chapter 255
Melindaâs parents exchanged a glance, and Maria started sobbing, saying, âMy sweet girl, youâre my own flesh and blood. Your death has left me heartbroken. You just left us like this and it broke our hearts.â Maria was crying her heart out, slumped on the ground, beating her own legs helplessly.
Jay was equally a wreck, sobbing, âMy poor Melinda, got into trouble at their club and didnât even get a dime in compensation. How are your mother and I supposed to carry on?â
In this situation, no one could console them; even the cops were at a loss for words. Their daughter had died, and their grief was only natural.
Anastasia was helpless too. Sheâd never seen parents this cold-hearted. At this time, they were trying to take advantage of their daughterâs death.
The cops came over and said, âMelindaâs suicide has been thoroughly investigated. It was indeed suicide, not murder. Her body is at the morgue, and youâre free to take it for burial.â
At the mention of taking the body for burial, Jay had a strong reaction, âNo way.â
Maria also chimed in, âNo.â
Their greed, preference for their son, and cold attitude towards their daughter reveal the ugly side of human nature without any disguise.
The cops continued, âThe case can be closed now. You have to take the body.â
In his desperation, Jay blurted out, âThatâs not possible. My son is getting married next month. How can we bring a corpse home? Thatâs very unlucky.â
This statement shocked everyone present. Was this something a father would say? His daughter had died, and he didnât want to take her home for burial because she was unlucky?
Jay also realized that he shouldnât have said that and hastily added, âIf youâre saying itâs a closed case, how can we believe that? My daughter wouldnât kill herself. It must be a murder. You cops have to investigate it thoroughly.â
Maria added, âYes, look into it more. There must be something fishy about that Neon Dreams place. You canât deceive us just because weâre from the countryside, saying our daughter killed herself.â
The cops were speechless again, âItâs been thoroughly investigated. Your daughter did commit suicide. The evidence is clear.â
Maria kept pressing, âThen why did she kill herself? We spoke yesterday, and she was fine. How could she suddenly commit suicide?â
âExactly, a normal person wouldnât suddenly commit suicide.â Anastasia coldly stared at Maria and said, âThatâs a question for you. What exactly did you say to Melinda on the phone? You used her money to buy a house for your son and didnât even tell her about his wedding. Were you afraid sheâd embarrass you if she came home? You lived off her money but still considered it dirty.â
Anastasia hit the nail on the head. Each word was like a sharp knife, pointing at their ugliest side.
Daria suddenly remembered something and said, âRight, when Melinda came home yesterday afternoon, she seemed off. Later, I heard her phone ring and her crying. She had been borrowing money lately. You must have forced her to give you more money. She couldnât take it anymore and jumped off the building. You caused her death.â
Jay and Maria, emotionally charged, vehemently denied, âWhat nonsense are you talking about? Weâre her parents, how could we harm her? You, young lady, have no manners.â
Maria angrily glared at Daria, who got scared and took a couple of steps back.
Anastasia said, âMelindaâs gone now, and weâll never know what she was thinking before she jumped. Anyone who isnât blind can see through you true intentions.â
Jay and Maria, a bit guilty, didnât dare meet Anastasiaâs gaze.
Anastasia sneered, âI just feel heartbroken for Melinda. You exploited her when she was alive, used her hard work and efforts for your sonâs needs. Now that sheâs gone, youâre still not letting her rest, trying to squeeze the last bit of benefit from her. Do you really have the heart for this? Melinda was born after ten months of your pregnancy too.â,
This last sentence seemed to strike a chord in Maria.
