Chapter 375
Salma returned from the grocery store, arms full of fresh produce, to find Monica and Anastasia deep in conversation.
Anastasia got up to help. âNah, donât worry about it.â Salma waved her off with a chuckle. âIâve got it, sweetie. You just relax. Monica, are you joining us for lunch? Iâm making meatballs.â
Monica grinned. âAbsolutely, Salma. Your cooking is irresistible. I can never say no.â
Beaming at the compliment, Salma said, âWell then, you should come more often. Iâve got plenty of time on my hands, and I love
cooking.â
Salma didnât have the heart to return to her job at the hotel when Anastasia was pregnant.
Anastasia settled back on the couch, giggling. âMom loves it when people compliment her cooking.â
Monica laughed. âSalma, your cooking is far better than my momâs. I dare not eat her cooking, itâs a disaster. Poor dad, heâs been eating her food for over twenty years.â
Anastasia laughed. âWhen was the last time you went home?â
âAbout two months ago.â Monica shrugged. âTheyâre busier than I am. Itâs pretty quiet when I go back.â Monica had bought a two-bedroom apartment in the city.
Salma, peeling garlic in the living room, shared, âI ran into Penny earlier. She was asking around about her son, and she had been following me and Pattieâ
âPenny was following you and Pattie?â Anastasiaâs heart skipped a beat. âAnd?â
Salma reassured her, âNothing. Penny just misses her son, I guess. Weâre moving out this weekend anyway.â
Monica frowned. âYouâre moving?â
Anastasia nodded. âWeâre moving to a house in Southridge Estates where Herman used to live. Heâs hired a nutritionist to take care of my diet. The doctor said I need to take care of my health and not overeat.â
Monica agreed, âThat makes sense. This place is too small, especially with the baby coming. Thereâs just not enough room. Plus, having Salma take care of you and pick up Pattie from school is too much.â
Anastasiaâs phone rang, interrupting their conversation. The caller ID showed a number she didnât recognize. Anastasia answered, âHello?â
âMs. Jewell, this is the director of the orphanage on Southern Mountain Road. We have some news about the child you were. looking forâ¦â
Anastasiaâs heart pounded. âReally? Where is my daughter?â
Anastasia had never given up the search for her daughter. She had visited all the orphanages near the area where her daughter was last seen, leaving her contact information in case anyone had any leads.
The director on the phone said, âMs. Jewell, the situation is a bit unusual. A couple has adopted the child. Why donât you come in, and we can discuss it further?â
âThank you, Iâll be right there,â Anastasia replied, her heart still racing as she ended the call.
Anastasia turned to Salma, excitement shining in her eyes. âMom, they found her. They found my daughter.â
The news took Salma by surprise. She exchanged a worried glance with Monica. Their excitement was overshadowed by
concern.
Anastasia stood up. âI need to go to the orphanage right away. Monica, can you drive me?â
âAna, hold on,â Monica cautioned. âThis is a big deal. If it really is your daughter, whatâs your plan?â
Anastasia didnât understand Monicaâs concern. âI would bring her home, of course.â
Monica explained, âYouâre part of the Salstrom family now. If you suddenly show up with a daughter, your own flesh and blood, how will the Salstroms react? What about Herman?â
Salma agreed, âAna, Monica is right. You need to think this through. Youâre pregnant, and Grannie Anita is already not happy with you. This isnât the right time.â
