Sometimes, hostility might not be stemmed from someone elseâs actions. It could merely be because the personâs existence accentuated the weak point of one and caused one to suffer injustice.
This new receptionist was Wendy Skeen. She had put in a lot of effort to gain a job at Presgrave Group. Though she was the most outstanding one among her peers, right now, she appeared to be the worst compared to Ellen.
Furthermore, she had just witnessed with her own eyes how Jared saved Ellen from trouble earlier, so that was a cause of annoyance for her.
Inside the office of the finance department, Selena could not seem to focus on her work. She remained in her seat with a thunderous expression and kept fussing over Ellenâs date with Jared tonight.
Perhaps the rumors about them would spread like wildfire in a couple more days. At that moment, it was hard to describe how horrible Selena felt. She was worried and fearful that Ellen would surpass her in the future.
She could not accept her cousinâs excellence or lead a better life than her because, to her, it seemed that Ellen deserved a life of impoverishment.
âLena, do you want to join me for dinner tonight? Iâll book a restaurant for us,â one of her male colleagues invited fawningly as he walked past her.
However, Selena rejected him immediately. âIâm busy.â
At that moment, she was contemplating how to crash Ellenâs dinner date tonight. She paid no heed to my request and didnât even care to invite me, but that doesnât mean I canât pop over by myself! She revealed a cold sneer. Letâs see how Ellenâs going to kick me out of the place by then!
To approach Jared, Selena had resorted to every plot and scheme she could come up with because she wanted badly to get to know him. If only she could get hold of his phone number, she would do everything she could to win his affection.
As such, tonightâs date was critical to her, and there was no way she would miss this dinner.
Suddenly, a male colleague who was interested in Selena walked past her. She clung to his arm and revealed an affectionate face while saying, âKenny, can I ask you for a favor? If you succeed in helping me, Iâll treat you to a meal tomorrow.â
âSure! What is it?â
âTrail someone for me and find out which restaurant sheâs heading to later,â she requested.
âThatâs easy enough. Who is she?â
âShe works at the reception. Sheâs the one seated on the furthest to the left. Sheâs about to leave work soon, so please hurry. Thanks!â After Selena said that, she winked at him suggestively.
The man known as Kenny instantly felt his heart flutter and agreed. After all, it was only a small matter, and he would even get the chance to have a meal with Selena, so this was undoubtedly a good deal.
As such, Kenny left work earlier and stood in the lobby staring at the reception area. It was then he was momentarily stunned by the pretty young girl on the furthest left. He did not expect the girl Selena wanted him to trail to be a beauty.
Ten minutes before work ended, Ellen received a text message from Jared. He told her that he would pick her up from the front entrance in ten minutes.
When the time came, she gathered her belongings and left work, after which Kenny immediately followed her. He was shocked to see her walk toward a gray sports car parked by the side. This girl has found a rich prospect. The cost of obtaining this sports car is substantial!
At a glance, the sports car appeared to be an internationally limited edition. There were not many people in Averna who could afford this top-of-the-line luxury sports car.
Despite Kennyâs shock, he saw a cab parked by the side and instantly entered it before instructing the driver, âPlease follow that sports car.â
The cab driver was skillful and trailed behind the sports car steadily. Twenty minutes later, the sports car turned into a junction leading to a high-end food street before parking at the entrance of a Mediterranean restaurant. Subsequently, a young man and girl came out of the car.
Kenny immediately snapped a photo of the restaurant and sent it to Selena. âLena, Iâve found out what youâre after. They entered this restaurant.â
Selena was currently waiting for his reply at the entrance of the company, so as soon as she realized that he had succeeded in locating them, she sent him a love emoji. âThanks, Kenny. Iâll treat you to a meal tomorrow!â
After Selena replied to Kennyâs message, she immediately started her car and headed over to the restaurant. To her surprise, she did not expect him to enter the restaurant and snap a photo of the window seat for her. âThis is where theyâre seated.â
As she waited at the traffic lights, she noticed that text message and was delighted. Ellen chose a spot in the main dining hall, so itâd be much easier for me to pretend Iâd encountered them by chance.
She texted Kenny again to inform him that he could leave. Coincidentally, he had another appointment, so he left accordingly.
By the window seat, Ellen fidgeted nervously as she sat across from Jared. She could no longer keep her cool and behave naturally upon getting to know his identity. She appeared to behave cautiously around him in everything she did.
âTake a look at the menu, President Presgrave,â she said.
Jared browsed the menu and selected a few dishes that were tasty and relatively inexpensive.
While she was prepared to order and turned to the waitress, she realized the waitress was staring at the man and ignoring her.
âAhemâ¦â Ellen had no choice but to cough purposely. At that point, the waitress finally retracted her gaze with a reddened face and turned to her. âMaâam, would you like to add on to the order?â
âYes, two more.â
After Ellen was done, she turned around and realized that all of the young waitresses in the restaurant had their eyes on her table. Undoubtedly, Jared resembled a magnet, which attracted all of the young girlsâ attention in the restaurant.
He was a dazzling presence and caused all of the girlsâ hearts to flutter, even by just sitting there.
Ellen, too, could not help being drawn to him and stared at him. Under the lamp glow, the man had elegant features with a milky-white complexion. He looked exquisite, yet there was a manly air to his looks. He held a teacup in his hand while gazing out of the window, looking as if he was framed into a stunning portrait. He was indeed blessed with gorgeous looks.
Downstairs, Selena had just parked her car and no longer cared whether her actions were embarrassing as she grabbed her bag and went up the stairs. As she entered the dining hall, she immediately caught sight of Ellen and Jared by the window seat.
She took a deep breath before heading over toward the two.
Coincidentally, Ellen lifted her head to glance in the direction of the entrance. Her eyes widened in surprise when she saw Selena. Whatâs going on? Why is she here?
At that moment, Selena tugged her lips into a smile and called out Ellenâs name warmly, âEllie, youâre having dinner here too? This is such a coincidence! Iâm meeting my friend at this restaurant too!â
Ellen could tell at a glance that she was lying. How can it be so coincidental? Is she truly here to meet a friend, or did she follow me here?
Despite being well aware of the situation, Ellen could not possibly expose Selenaâs lie because she had taken a seat next to her, full of smiles.
At that moment, Selenaâs phone went off, and she quickly answered it. âWhat?! Youâre standing me up?
So, you canât make it today? Iâve arrived at the restaurant. Oh, well. Forget about it if you canât make it.
My cousinâs here too, so Iâll join her for dinner.â
After that superb act, she pretended to hang up her call. In reality, she merely set an alarm to go off.
She turned to Ellen. âIâm sure you wouldnât mind me joining you for dinner, right, Ellie?â Subsequently, she turned to stare beseechingly at Jared and said coyly, âPresident Presgrave, my friend happened to stand me up. Can I join you two for dinner?â
He nodded slightly. Naturally, he did not know that Selena had schemed hard to join this dinner date.
As for Ellen, she was stifled and overwhelmed by a heavy feeling within her. She had truly never encountered such a schemeful person in her life.
âEllie, President Presgrave has agreed. Iâm sure you wouldnât make me leave, right? How about this?
My treat tonight.â Selena smiled smugly as she turned to Ellen.
In the end, Ellen had no choice but to purse her lips and nod. âI said it would be my treat.â
Selena was pleased. I finally succeeded in joining their dinner date.
Along the way here, she had purposely retouched her makeup. At last, she could finally showcase herself in front of Jared.
âEllie, does your face still hurt? Let me take a look.â
At that, Ellen instantly grabbed her incoming hand to stop her from touching her face. âIt doesnât, Selena.â
Selena purposely said frustratedly, âI should honestly get my parents to tell Uncle Garrett and the others off. How could they do this to you?â
âThanks, Selena.â Ellen felt revolted in her heart. She knew for a fact that Selena was putting on an act, yet she was forced to play along with her. What she was experiencing now was utterly discomforting for her.
âPresident Presgrave, have some tea.â Selena stood up and took the teapot to fill Jaredâs teacup.
âThank you,â he replied in a low voice.
Compared to Selena, Ellen was naturally not as adept at interacting with others. After Selena took a seat, she lifted her cup. âPresident Presgrave, Iâd like to propose a toast.â
He lifted his teacup slightly to toast her. Instantly, she beamed widely and took over the role of the host instead. âPresident Presgrave, Iâm so impressed by your achievements. Youâre tasked to run such a major company at a young age. You must be outstanding!â
Meanwhile, Ellen sat by the side and remained silent. She secretly felt dejected and resigned. Before she knew it, she accidentally choked on her tea while out of focus.
âUhukâ¦â She coughed twice, and Selena slapped her on the back quite roughly. Though she appeared to be gentle, she exerted huge force on Ellen.
âAre you alright, Ellie?â
Jared turned to look at Ellen with worry. âSlow down.â
She lifted her head to look at him before turning to Selena and noticing the smug smile on her face that was only comprehensible to herself.
Throughout dinner, Selena was the one who practically dominated the conversation as she came up with various topics to chat about with Jared. She showed off nearly everything that she was well-versed in.
As for Ellen, she became the audience there. Compared to Selenaâs impressive upbringing, Ellenâs upbringing was pretty much not worth mentioning.
Jared had been well brought up since he was young; although he did not enjoy the conversation with Selena, he did not reveal the slightest hint of displeasure. He merely focused on studying Ellenâs emotions and took note of her awkward yet polite countenance.
However, Selena remained unaware that her actions had triggered the displeasure of the two. On the contrary, she was annoyed that dinner ended too soon.
As soon as Ellen put down her utensils, Jared followed her action and asked, âHow was dinner? Are you full?â
âYes! Iâm stuffed to the brim,â Ellen replied with a smile.
Subsequently, Selena put down her fork and parroted. âIâm stuffed too.â
âIâll foot the bill, then.â After Ellen said that, she grabbed her bag and got up. Yet, she was told upon arriving at the counter that the bill had been paid.
Stunned, she turned around to look toward their dining table. At that instance, Jared had his eyes on her and beamed widely. She was slightly embarrassed as she walked over and asked, âWhy did you pay? I told you this was my treat.â
âYou can do that next time.â He rose to his feet.
At that point, Selena turned to shoot a jealous look at Ellen. What? President Presgrave is setting up another date with her?!
âOkay, then. Youâre not allowed to foot the bill beforehand next time,â Ellen instructed with a smile.
âSure. Letâs go. Iâll send you home.â He was ready to actualize his words.
Hearing that, Selena immediately bit her lips and asked brazenly, âPresident Presgrave, could I hitch a ride home too? I hailed a cab to get here, so I didnât drive today.â
âIâm sorry, but I came in a sports car, so a third person would not be able to fit inside.â Jared rejected her.
Selena knew well that there was another row of seats in a sports car, but she did not pursue it since he had said so. Suddenly, she recalled that Ellenâs house was nearer than hers, so she turned to Ellen and proposed. âEllie, could you please let President Presgrave send me home? You should take a cab home.â
That was despicable of Selena as she knew that Ellen was subservient and easy to convince, so she went ahead and demanded brazenly.
Before Ellen had the chance to reply, Jared interjected, âEllenâs house is located in a much more secluded area, so why donât you catch a cab home, Miss Aguirre?â After he said that, he turned to Ellen and insisted. âLetâs go.â
âBye, Selena. Weâll head off first.â Ellen bade farewell to her cousin.
With that, Selena stood awkwardly at the same spot and stomped her feet secretly. She was undeniably annoyed. Exactly in what aspect am I worse than Ellen, huh? Iâm considered a beauty in terms of looks, and Iâve got a great figure too. Besides, I carry myself way more elegantly than her!
Why is Jared only drawn to her? Why hasnât he noticed my outstanding qualities?
Selena stayed behind at the restaurant for nearly ten minutes before she descended the stairs. Of course, she drove herself there earlier. To avoid any awkward scenes, she had to wait till Jaredâs car left before she came down.
In the meantime, that sports car was moving along a busy road. Ellen was momentarily at a loss for words, so the atmosphere inside the car felt rather tense.
âI can tell your cousin isnât nice to you at all.â Jared broke the silence.
âHow?â Ellen asked curiously.
âShe wasnât even there to meet her friend for dinner. I reckon she followed us to the restaurant. As your cousin, she didnât even care about your feelings and continuously neglected you while she bombarded me with topics.â
She blinked in amazement. I canât believe he noticed that.
Then, she forced a smile. âMy cousinâs family is the wealthiest among our extended family. She had a better childhood than mine.â
âThatâs not a reason for her to belittle you.â He shot her a deep look. Even as an outsider, he could not stand Selenaâs behavior toward her.
âIâm used to that.â Ellen smiled.
As they arrived at her home, Jared frowned upon seeing the dilapidated building she lived in. âAre you still allowed to stay here?â
âOf course. I have until the end of this month,â she replied with a smile. At least she would get to save on another monthâs worth of rental fees.
âLet me tell you something. The resettlement project here is under me,â he confessed.
She could not help exclaiming in shock, âIs your company in charge of the resettlement project in this area?â
âYes.â He nodded.
She was delighted to hear that. âThatâs such a coincidence.â
âGo home. Give me a call if you need any help at all.â
âDrive safely.â Ellen waved at him and watched as he drove off into the distance before entering her house and switching on the lights. Although this place was run down, to her, it was the most comfortable home ever.
A short while after Jared left, a shabby SUV arrived at her doorstep. Garrett came out of the car and knocked on her door without saying a word as he glanced at the lit-up house.
The loud banging gave Ellen a huge fright, and she immediately rushed over to the door and asked, âWhoâs there?â
âItâs me. Hurry up and open the door.â His drunken voice rang from outside. It was obvious that he had been drinking.
Feeling her heart skip a bit, Ellen began to feel terror. She immediately thought of seeking help as she yelled at the door, âGarrett, itâs late now. Iâm about to go to bed. You should go home.â
âYou brat! Open the door right now and hand me the money. Iâll leave after you do that. If you donât, Iâll stay right here banging on your door.â Garrett was a rogue and hollered back at her.
Faced with such circumstances, Ellen grabbed her phone and intended to call her uncle over for help.
However, as she dialed his number, he did not answer the call despite the call being put through. On the other side of the door, Garrett continued to bash persistently.
She felt her heart tighten and suddenly recalled Jared, who had left not long ago. Can I seek help from him?
âHurry up and open the door, you brat! Or else, Iâll kick it down. Iâll be able to get you even if you hide inside.â He continued his drunken rage outside.
Frightened, Ellen could not seem to contain her tears. Finally, she shut her eyes and dialed Jaredâs number.
âHello,â he answered the call.
âPresident Presgrave, could you head back to my house? M-My uncleâs drunk, and he wonât stop banging on my door. Iâm scared.â Her voice broke due to fear.
âHang tight. Iâll come over right now.â He comforted her before hanging up.
Bombarded with the noises outside, Ellen clutched her phone, and her heart thudded frantically in fear.
She could not imagine what Garrett would do to her if she opened the door; she had a feeling that he would hit her.
Though she was usually a stoic person, she was close to breaking down at that moment. She did not expect everyone in her extended family to threaten her this way, all because of money.
Fifteen minutes later, Jaredâs sports car rushed in from the junction and halted in front of her house. He saw Garrett slamming the door while cursing under the streetlight. âYou brat! Open the door! Iâll kick the door down right now!â
Bang!
Behind Garrett, a car door was slammed shut, prompting him to jump in fright. He turned around and saw a tall, strapping male with a thunderous look striding toward him under the streetlight. Instantly, he recognized the man.
âItâs you.â Garrett was still in a drunken state. If he was sober, he would not dare to go against this young man.
However, as he recalled being thrown out of the place this morning, he was filled with anger. He pointed at Jared and yelled, âW-Why are you here? Iâm warning you, this is our family matter. Youâre an outsider, so itâs none of your business!â
âDo you want to get lost now or wait for the police to get here?â Jared asked coldly.
âY-You brat! Do you know who I am? Iâm Ellenâs uncle, so how dare you behave so impudently toward me!â Not only did Garrett show his drunken ways, but he also attempted to take advantage of his seniority.
Jared knocked on the door and shouted, âOpen the door, Ellen.â
As soon as she heard his voice, she instantly flung the door open, for she was worried that Garrett would hit Jared. At that instance, Garrett rushed over and attempted to drag her as she unlocked the door. Instantly, Jared tugged Ellen behind him and stood protectively in front of her. Subsequently, he grabbed hold of Garrettâs arms and shoved him aside.
Garrett stumbled backward as his expression turned ugly out of anger. âHuh. How dare you guys lay hands on me! Do you seriously think I wouldnât be able to do anything to you?â
After saying that, he found a rock on the ground and grabbed it to hit them with it. Ellenâs face turned pale as a sheet upon noticing his action. âStop, Garrett!â
Yet, it was a second too late as he had already hit Jaredâs body. Worried that Garrett would injure Ellen, Jared turned to her and instructed, âGather your belongings and get into my car.â
As a result, she hurriedly rushed out of the house with her bag in her hand and noticed that Garrett was in a frenzy under the streetlight. He grabbed the rock and attempted to hit Jared with it, but Jared easily dodged the attack.
The next second, Garrett shifted his target to Ellen and attempted to strike her with the rock. As soon as Jared caught sight of that, he lifted his hand to shield her. The rock landed hard on the back of his hand, and she saw the sharp, jagged edges piercing through him as a streak of blood dripped across his hand under the faint light.
At that point, Jared flared up and kicked Garrett aside before dragging Ellen to head over to the car.
Scrambling up from the ground, Garrett raced after them with the rock in his hand. Indeed, he was out of his mind in a frenzied state as he raced toward Jaredâs sports car and smashed it repeatedly. Seeing that, Ellen cowered behind the car door and shielded her eyes in fear, struggling to even look at him.
Soon, Jared entered the driverâs seat and started the ignition before stepping on the accelerator to leave. Behind them, Garrett cursed at them, âDonât go, you brats!â
At that moment, Ellenâs face was as pale as a sheet. She looked at Jaredâs injured hand, and tears began streaming down her face. It pained her to see him wounded. âYour hand⦠Iâm sorry. You got injured all because of me.â
âIâm fine. Itâs nothing major.â He was thankful that he arrived in time. Had he not turned up, the outcome would have been horrible once Garrett smashed the door open.
Still, Ellen felt extremely guilty about it. At that moment, she remained frightened due to the shock, and her body trembled uncontrollably.
âDo you have anywhere you can go?â asked Jared.
She shook her head as tears welled up in her eyes. âNo.â
âYou can come over to my place.â He offered without hesitation.
Surprised, Ellen looked at him in disbelief, âYour place?â
âIâve got plenty of spare rooms, so feel free to stay a night.â He was genuinely worried about her. If her impoverished, nasty relatives found her, she would not be able to get away from being sought revenge.
âWould that be appropriate?â She was worried she would disrupt his life.
Jared glanced at her. âI live alone. Itâs all good.â
At that point, Ellen blushed before adding, âDo you have a girlfriend? That wouldnât be appropriate, would it?â
He instantly replied, âIâm single.â
To that, she was momentarily silent. I canât believe Iâve discovered our big bossâ relationship status!
Heâs so handsome, yet heâs still single? That is too shocking. A man with his looks and figure should not be single. I wouldnât be surprised at all if he had ten girlfriends.
âOkay. Iâll stay the night. Tomorrow, Iâll start looking for a place.â She had no other option but to stay at his place for the night unabashedly.
At Aguirre Residence, a low-spirited Connor fell asleep drunk after a gathering with friends. So, he did not pick up Ellenâs phone call.
Selena was in a foul mood too. She told the entire story to Olivia, who could not believe her ears. âAre you sure that your boss saved Ellen?â
âYeah! Itâs like they knew each other before this. They even had dinner together.â
Olivia was shocked to the core. Is this fate? Ellen and Mr. Presgrave are acquainted? That Mr.
Presgrave, who received a heart donation from her brother?
âMom, is something on your mind?â Selena gazed at her mother curiously.
âNothing. I was just thinking if he did that by chance.â
âNo. I wonder what Ellen did to gain President Presgraveâs favor.â Selena saw it with her own eyes, hence the legit anger.
âYouâre overthinking. Why would your boss fall for her?â Despite her words, Olivia feared that something else would happen.
Things will get complicated if President Presgrave finds out that Ellenâs brother was the donor. Not only will he look after her, but he will also hold us responsible. I hope Ellen wonât discover the truth forever.
Meanwhile, Ellen had arrived at Jaredâs place. She gaped at the sight of the massive mansion situated halfway up the hillside. This must be the life of the rich! Someone poor like me wonât be able to dream of living in a mega-mansion like this.
âThis place is huge!â she exclaimed. âDo you live alone?â
âFor now. My parents and sister live abroad.â Jared led her to the parlor.
She could not help the constant exclamation inside her as she deemed it lucky to be able to stay at such a place for the night.
âIâll take you to your room.â He brought her to the third floor, heading to one of the guest rooms. âYouâll be staying here.â He then pointed at another door. âThis is my room. You can call me if youâre afraid.â
âIâm not afraid.â The place gave her a sense of security.
âOkay. You should get some rest.â Only then did he realize that she came here empty-handed. âIâll get some clothes from my sisterâs room.â
âItâs fine.â Ellenâs face became red.
âItâs alright. Sheâs nice.â Jared entered her sisterâs closet to search for clothes.
She heaved a sigh. The incident still sent chills down her spine, casting a pall of cloud upon her. Do I have to live a life in hiding from now on?
Jared found a set of pajamas and casual clothes for her before leaving. Ellen shut the door while recalling Garrettâs actions, which made her worry about the following days. What am I gonna do? Am I going to live in harassment forever? Are they not gonna give up if I donât give them the money?
Fortunately, she encountered Jared. It was her misfortune for having such relatives, but he was her lucky star.
In the meantime, he sat on the couch in his room and mused over the incident that occurred, thinking of a plan to solve Ellenâs problem.
He did not wish anything unfortunate to happen to that girl. He felt the purpose to protect her ever since he met her, yet he did not know why. He placed his hand over his chest to feel his heart, which raced unusually fast whenever she was in trouble.
That eve, Ellen had a good nightâs sleep and did not forget about work. When she was ready in the morning, she opened the door, but her mind blanked out. How am I supposed to go to work?!
It would take a lot of time just to descend a mountain, let alone a neighborhood for the rich. The bus stop was located far away from here and going to work on foot was definitely out of the question!
as currently living in her bossâ place.
As such, she could only head back into the villa hall. Right as she walked past the doorway, she heard footsteps coming from the staircase. Subconsciously, she turned over, only to find herself stupefied as a man in blackâstunning and classyâwas descending the steps, and a glance of him in his extraordinariness took her breath away.
Upon seeing Ellen carrying her bag and coming into the villa, Jared subconsciously revealed a grin. âIâll send you in a bit.â
Awkwardly, Ellen nodded. After all, a mighty boss such as Jared would normally only go to work past ten. Yet, in order to send her, he brought himself to wake up at eight.
Then, after Jared brought her to the underground garage, she peered at the dozen opulent top-grade cars in the luxurious underground garage. At once, she secretly grew dumbfounded. With such a collection, he must be a sports car enthusiast!
This time, he picked a sports car. He then opened the door to the passenger seat and invited her to get in. Inside, the control panel reflected the wildest dreams a man could have, and the flamboyant sound of the engine revving resembled the roar of a charging beast.
It only took Jared twenty minutes to reach the company. Once Ellen alighted from the car, she waved at him. âThank you, President Presgrave.â
Jared merely responded with a nod and drove toward the parking lot.
After speedily finishing up her breakfast in the cafeteria nearby the company, Ellen went straight to her post. Although she received a sum of relocation funds, she would never give up her current hard-
earned job. Essentially, she would feel more at ease with her money saved up. Of course, she was never one to splurge ever since she was a child.
She then began to tidy up her post while sorting the documents presented to the reception on behalf of a senior who had been looking after her. After the clean-up, she then tended to other tasks. Right at that moment, a woman walked past her post and sneakily took a set of documents before throwing it into the trash can with her back facing the camera.
Soon, Ellenâs coworkers clocked in for work one after another. The next moment, her reception desk received a call demanding certain documents.
âHi. Speaking from the Finance Department. I believe there was an urgent document for the Finance Department sent to your post earlier. Can you please send it over to me?â
Immediately, Ellen searched through the documents she sorted in the morning, but she couldnât find any that were for the Finance Department, after which she informed the caller about it.
âHow is that possible? My client literally placed the document on desk number eightâyour deskâ
earlier. Did you lose it? The document contains information of utmost importance, and I assure you, you cannot afford to lose it.â The caller was instantaneously infuriated.
âIâm sorry. Iâll look for it again.â
âTen minutes. I need it for the meeting soon.â The caller angrily hung up as soon as they were finished.
In that instant, Ellen grew somewhat panicked. I placed all the documents I received in the morning in the cabinet right here! Why canât I find it?
In the meantime, someone revealed a fascinated grin as they gazed at her scouring hectically.
After a thorough search, Ellen was still unable to find the requested document. Eventually, the caller furiously dashed to her desk. It was a veteran in her thirties. With a face filled with rage, she stood in front of her and rebuked, âDo you receptionists know how to do your job? How do you manage to lose a document? Iâm going to file a complaint against you!â
âWeâre deeply sorry about that. Sheâs a newcomer, and sheâs still trying to get the hang of her job.â
Standing beside Ellen, Olive, another company veteran, attempted to defend her.
âThat is even more absurd for a newcomer! How did you even manage to make it into Presgrave Group? Is it your charming face? Did you make it by some shameful means? With such incompetence, you actually wish to receive high pay working here? How ludicrous.â
âI am terribly sorryâ¦â Ellen apologized.
âAnd what can âsorryâ do? Iâll generously allow you another hour. If you still fail to find it, Iâll seriously take it to the general manager and have you fired!â The veteran did not hold back with her reprimands.
Watching Ellen being scolded savagely, the other employees couldnât help but glance at her with sympathy. Her eyes grew somewhat red as she was strenuously holding back her tears. Shortly after, as she was bending over to dispose of some trash, she unexpectedly saw a folder of documents in the trash can. Surprised, she reached out to grab the folder. Isnât this what the Finance Department was looking for?
âI found it!â At once, Ellen was relieved.
âWhat? How is it in the trash can?â Olive, who was beside her, asked.
Ellen, too, was puzzled. Iâm sure that I sorted all of the folders earlier, so why is there one in the trash can under the desk?
âAnyway, be careful not to repeat the mistake next time. If sheâs really to report you, youâll really be dismissed,â Olive warned.
Ellen nodded. She also forbade herself from repeating such a mistake in the future. Thereupon, she personally delivered the documents to the veteran employee from the Finance Department, only to catch Olivia complaining and throwing shades at her to their coworkers. âIt really baffles me how such useless workers get into the company. What a disgrace!â
Sadly, Ellen could only bear it through. After returning to her post, her phone rang, and when she saw who the caller was, her heart skipped a beat. Apparently, it was Lilac. Swiftly, she accepted the call.
âAunt Lilac!â
âEllie, your Uncle Garrett didnât scare you when he was drunk last night, did he?â
Ellen immediately answered, âAunt Lilac, please tell him not to do that again, or Iâm going to call the cops.â
âEllie, youâre quite close with your boss, right? Can you put in a good word for your uncle? Heâs in trouble.â
Dazed and confused, Ellen asked, âWhat trouble?â
âHe was sued, and now he has to pay a million for the carâs reparation.â
Upon realization, Ellen uttered in dismay, âIs the money for our presidentâs car reparation?â She remembered how Garrett picked up a rock and whacked Jaredâs car numerous times with it. It must be extremely costly to repair such an expensive carâ¦
âAunt Lilac, you should let Uncle Garrett deal with the problem himself. I donât think I can contribute in any way.â Ellen had no intention of being a good person again. Besides, it was entirely Garrettâs responsibility to reap what he sowed.
âI beg of you, Ellie. Help your uncle out!â When Lilac finished, another womanâs voice was heard. âEllie, itâs your Aunt Ayrenn here. Your Uncle Garrett was indeed at fault yesterday, but can you please speak up for him? Thereâs no way our family can afford a million!â
In response, Ellen sternly stated, âAunt Ayrenn, I frankly canât help you here. My boss and I are merely a superior and an employee. Besides, it is only reasonable that Uncle Garrett compensates after having destroyed someone elseâs car.â
âEllie, help us out here, would you? We will stop asking you for the relocation fund, and we assure not to trouble you anymore in the future. Is that fine for you?â
âIâm sorry, but my hands are tied.â Ellen sounded very persistent. Furthermore, there was no reason for her to beg for mercy. She was already remorseful enough given that she was the cause of Jaredâs car getting damaged.
Meanwhile, gloom engulfed Garrettâs place as he was sent an insurance bill earlier this morning, in addition to a lawyerâs letter that clearly stipulated a million for the carâs reparation fee. He never expected to have gone into a frenzy after getting himself drunk and ending up owing a compensation fee of a million. Furthermore, it was precisely stated in the lawyerâs letter that he was to pay for the carâs reparation fee within three days or legal actions would be taken against him.
The Andino siblings were all present then. Simultaneously, they felt unfair for being unable to get their hands on the relocation fund and helpless toward their eldest brotherâs trouble.
Garrett was grasping his head. His son was about to graduate from university, and if he, as the father, was to hold any criminal record, his sonâs future career would be doomed.
âWhy donât we look for Connor and have him talk it out with Ellen? Iâm sure her boss purchased the most deluxe insurance for each of his cars, so all we have to do is have her beg and make her boss acquire the claim with his own insurance,â Ajax suggested.
âRight! Ellen only needs to say a word and the entire problem would be solved. How are we going to look for a million anyway?â
Right at that moment, a black sedan stopped by the entrance of Garrettâs grocery store. From within, a middle-aged man got out and asked with a stern face, âWho is Garrett Andino?â
âI am Garrett.â Garrett sprung up from his seat.
âI am here to negotiate with you in our bossâ stead.â
âAnd your boss is?â
âMr. Jared Presgrave, President of Presgrave Group.â
âOh, yes. Good day to you!â Immediately, Garrett welcomed the middle-aged man with passion and not a trace of disrespect. There was nothing but gratification in his eyes.
âOur boss has expressed that, as long as you stop pestering Miss Reiss, he shanât pursue the carâs reparation fee any further, but he shall still retain the right to pursue the matter. Do you understand?â
The middle-aged man was Dean Tilly, and he was Jaredâs personal assistant who dealt with Jaredâs private matters.
Instantly, thoughts arose in the Andinosâ minds. At the same time, the overwhelming weight in Garrettâs heart vanished, after which he hastily answered, âYes, of course! I did some unspeakable things when I was drunk last night. I assure you that we the Andinos will stop troubling Ellen, and I will definitely fulfill my part of the promise as long as your boss no longer pursues my obligation.â
âGarrett, the fault is your own. Why are we dragged into your promise as well?â Nicole scoffed.
Hearing that, Dean turned to her and warned, âEllen Reiss is under Mr. Presgraveâs protection. Should any of you Andinos dare to bother her in the future, he will not go easy on you, and if any of you dare meddle with Miss Reissâ relocation fund, you should get ready for prison.â
Deanâs warning instantly startled the Andinos. Never had they expected Ellen had found herself such an enormous pillar of support.
After Dean departed, the Andinos got into a quarrel right away. The matter with the relocation fund left a crack in the Andino siblingsâ relationship, as though there was a grave family feud. Seeing that, Lilac couldnât help but shed a tear in helplessness.
In the afternoon, Ellen received a text message, which she assumed to be a spam message at a glance, but to her surprise, the sender was Jared.
âIâve dealt with the Andinos for you. Nobody will trouble you anymore.â
Reading the text, Ellen was overwhelmed with emotions as her eyes were dampened thanks to the sentiments. She had no idea how to repay Jaredâs deeds as she replied, âThank you so much, President Presgrave. I promise to repay you at the first opportunity.â
âNo need. Just focus on your work!â
âI certainly will,â Ellen replied.
All of a sudden, the phone on her desk rang, after which she answered, âGood day, youâre speaking to Presgrave Groupâs reception.â
âEllen, please come to the Human Resource Department Managerâs office.â
Ellen was taken aback to receive a call from the Human Resource Department manager. After informing Olive about it, she went straight upstairs. Soon, she anxiously entered the HR managerâs office, wondering if the employee of the Finance Department she encountered earlier had made a complaint about her.
However, Ellen saw no signs of anger from the lady manager as she merely took a look at her, after which the manager pulled out a form. âFill this form out and sign it.â
Peering at the Employeeâs Living Quarters Application Form, Ellen subconsciously blinked and asked, âMiss Curry, what form is this?â
âItâs one of the accommodation benefits the company offers to its employees, and youâre one of the few selected to enjoy this benefit. Fill it out, and youâll receive a key once youâre done!â Finished, the manager continued observing her. Essentially, such a benefit was not open for application to ordinary employees as only manager-level employees were eligible to apply for it. Moreover, the house assigned to her was a luxurious benefit specifically designed for those of director-level and above.
âSeriously? They picked me?â Ellen was pleasantly surprised.
Despite letting out a chuckle, the manager wondered how oblivious Ellen was to her own luck. But of course, the higher-ups stated that she was not to disclose anything more than that. âIndeed, but you are obligated not to reveal the matter to anyone else. Now, you may simply move into the house.â
âGot it. Thank you, Miss Curry!â Ellen was extremely grateful.
In response, the manager bitterly grinned. Why is she thanking me? She should be thanking the boss himself. Without his signature, who would have dared to make such a decision?
After filling out the form, Ellen claimed a bunch of keys, as well as a card with an address to an apartment on it. Now, she could officially move into the new home the company arranged for her.
As Ellen was eager to share the good news with Jared, she sent him a text. âGood news! I was selected to move into the employeesâ living quarters!â
âReally? Congratulations!â
âI donât have to look for a new place anymore. Iâm so happy! Wanna have dinner tonight? Itâs on me!â
âNext time, perhaps. I have something else on tonight.â
âOkay.â Ellen beamed. Iâll have to adjust according to the big bossâ time, then!
After getting off work, Ellen speedily went home to pack up her clothes and some important belongings before grabbing a cab to the apartment she was assigned to. After settling the move-in procedure with the neighborhoodâs management, a lady from the management enthusiastically helped her carry her bags to the floor of her unit. Soon, the elevator stopped at the twelfth floor.
Right as Ellen entered the apartment, she was thoroughly dumbfounded. She never expected that the employees of Presgrave Group got to live in such sumptuous, extortionate homes. As such, she reckoned that the rooms must be smaller. After all, it was meant to contain one employee only.
Regardless, she was blown away by every facility from the hall to the upper stories. And when she finally reached her unit, the lady from the management left.
Grabbing the keys from her bag, Ellen then opened the door, and right after she pulled the door open, she saw a lavish porch, after which she entered through the doorway, only to find herself stupefied.
She was stunned for quite a while, unable to collect herself. Shockingly, it was an extravagant apartment that was roughly 2,000 square feet, ornamented by French windows, opulent couches, mesmerizing crystal chandeliers, and a massive TV.
She blinked her eyes repeatedly before grabbing her keys to verify the unit number, thinking, I must have gotten to the wrong unit, right? How do I, a mere receptionist, deserve such grand treatment?
Nonetheless, the unit number wasnât mistaken, just like everything else. This was the very unit the company arranged for her. As such, she suspected that the company must have made some error.
They must have accidentally prepared such a grand apartment instead of a simple unit. That must be it!
Iâll have to refer to Miss Curry tomorrow so that I donât waste the crucial resources of the company!
After all, to her, a simple single-bedroom unit was more than enough.
Meanwhile, at Connorâs place, having heard about Garrettâs matter, Olivia grew immensely frustrated.
She never expected that Ellen would be so bold as to have Jared defend her and deal with the Andinosâ desire to seize her relocation fund. Initially, she wanted a slice of the cake, but now that the Andinos could no longer obtain the fund, there was no way she could have it.
Nevertheless, what worried her the most was how Jared would react to the passing of Ellenâs brother given the time Ellen and he had been friends. By then, Jared would very soon find out that Ellen did not receive the compensation of one hundred million back then, as Olivia and the rest had been fully enjoying the benefit for the past sixteen years, which Jared would definitely be infuriated to find out.
Olivia grew more panicked as she thought about it. She couldnât help but shut the door in the middle of the night and dragged her husband over to talk about it. âConnor, why do you think Young Master Jared is so committed to protecting Ellen? Does he already know of her identity?â
Hearing that, Connor was startled, after which he hastily asked, âLena didnât tell anyone about this, did she?â
âLena doesnât even know about this. Iâm worried that after seeing Young Master Jaredâs wealth and influence, Ellen might try to seduce him by any means. As things develop, Ellen might tell him about her brotherâs death, and if that were to raise his suspicion, he would certainly look into it. Consequently, we wonât be able to run away from this. Besides, if this were to get out, the entire world would be shaming us!â
At once, Connor, too, grew hasty. He had been feeling guilty lately, and the mere thought of the consequences scared him. âWhat do you suggest we do, then?â
âWhy donât we find a partner for Ellen and get her married as soon as possible? By then, Young Master Jared would lose his interest in her. Since youâre her uncle, you should be in charge of her romantic future.â
