The morning sun rose over one of the Fire Continent's bustling inner states, casting golden light across the streets. In a cozy corner of the town, the aroma of fresh broth and steamed noodles drifted from a small noodle shop nestled between taller brick buildings. Inside, the warmth of the kitchen and the chatter of loved ones filled the air.
âWow, itâs already the D-Day,â Mr. Zaki said, arms crossed as he leaned against the counter, eyes fixed on the stairs.
âHis mother would be so proud,â Mrs. Zaki replied softly, her hands gently smoothing out the icing on a small birthday cake.
âQuick, quick, heâs coming down!â Sofia whispered excitedly, bouncing on her toes as she watched the staircase.
Footsteps padded against wood. A teenage boy with short black hair and drowsy eyes emerged, yawning and rubbing the sleep from his face.
âIâm here,â Dan said, stretching slightly.
âHappy birthday!!â everyone shouted in unison, the shop erupting with joy.
Dan blinked, then broke into a wide smile. âOh my gosh⦠thank you so much, guys.â
Sofia beamed. âI canât believe youâre sixteen now. Youâre all grown up! Youâre like the little brother I never had.â
âSame for you too,â Dan replied, pulling her into a hug. âNow whereâs the cake?â
âHere it is,â Mrs. Zaki said, carefully bringing the cake forward.
âBlow out the candle,â Mr. Zaki added, arms folded but with a rare grin on his face.
Dan took a deep breath and blew it out. âNow after I eat the cake, Iâm going to prepare to enter the Knight Exams.â
Sofia let out a sigh. âYou havenât given up on that yet? Didnât your mother not want that for you?â
Dan looked down for a moment. âYes⦠but she also told me to do what makes me happy.â
Mr. Zaki sighed. âFine, Dan. Weâve been trying to convince you for eight years now, but if youâre prepared, then you can go on.â
âJust be safe,â Mrs. Zaki added with concern in her eyes. âYou know⦠since you donât have any chi.â
Dan nodded. âYeah, I was afraid about that⦠but thatâs what all those karate classes were for.â
âBut stillâ¦â Sofia started.
âItâs okay,â Mr. Zaki interrupted gently. âItâs his choice now.â
Dan smiled, touched. âThanks for the cake. I have to go register nowâbut first, Iâll stop by the dojo.â
âBye-bye!â Sofia called out.
âBye-bye,â Dan returned, smiling as he stepped out.
Outside, the streets were already alive. Dan sprinted through the town, the breeze playing with his hoodie as he made his way toward the dojo.
---
At the Dojoâ¦
Sunlight filtered through the paper-panel windows of the Fire Continent Dojo, its wooden floors polished and gleaming. Banners hung along the walls with symbols of ancient martial arts.
âCome on, Axel! I told you to clean up before the students start showing up,â Zen barked. He was a tall man with tied-back dark hair and sharp eyes. His gi was loosely tied, revealing a toned chest earned from decades of training.
If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
âSorry, I forgot,â muttered Axel, his assistant, sweeping hurriedly.
Just then, three students walked in: Alexander, tall and athletic with dark green hair; Eugene, shorter and stockier with round glasses; and Ruby, a red-haired girl with a calm but confident aura.
âArgh, youâre not done?â Alexander complained.
âI thought you guys would stop starting late,â Eugene added, arms crossed.
âAs expected,â Ruby said dryly.
âHey! Show some respect to your teacher!â Zen scolded. âAnyway⦠where is my top student?â
âDan should be coming soon,â Alexander said. âYou know, itâs his birthday.â
âWhat?!â Zen blinked. âNone of you told me?â
âWe thought you knew,â Eugene said innocently.
Ruby smirked. âHeâs your best student and you didnât know that?â
Alexander grinned. âSo⦠did you bring your special present for him?â
Rubyâs eyes widened. âWhat?!â
âOh come on, I already know you have a crush on the guy. Just tell him.â
âBut⦠what if he doesnât like me?â Ruby said softly.
Alexander chuckled. âIâm sure he does. And if he doesnât, heâs an idiot.â
âWho?â Eugene asked.
âDan.â
Eugene laughed. âYeah, he can be like that sometimes.â
Zen sighed. âWhat am I supposed to do nowâ¦â
The door creaked open. Dan stepped in.
âHey, guys.â
Zen flinched. (Shit.)
âHey there, Dan. Happy birthday!â
âHappy birthday!â the three students chorused.
One by one, Alexander, Eugene, and Ruby handed Dan wrapped presents.
âThanks, guys,â Dan said, his eyes eventually landing on Zen.
(Damn it, heâs expecting something.)
âUmm, here Danâ¦â Zen said and handed him his golden trophy.
Danâs eyes widened. âWow⦠Thanks, Master. I know this must be hard for youâthis is your most prized trophy.â
âYou wonât believe itâ¦â Zen muttered, a tear slipping from his eye.
âBut Iâm sure nothing beats the arm bracelet your mom gave you,â Alexander said.
Dan looked down at the bracelet on his wrist. âYeah⦠nothing will.â
âWell, I canât stay long. I have to register for the Knight Exams.â
âThat again?â Ruby said.
âDo you really think you can go far?â Eugene asked.
Dan just smiled. âDonât worry about that. I will become a knight. I hope to be under the Fire Nationâs knight army.â
âWhy do you love the knights so much?â Alexander asked.
âOh, didnât I tell you? When I was eight, I saw a knight from the Fire Nation in actionâit was super cool. Theyâre like heroes.â
âI wish you well, Dan,â Zen said sincerely.
âThanks, guys. I gotta go now.â

At the Knight Entry Centre
The plaza was packed. Banners flew high, and registration booths buzzed with chatter. Knights in their polished armor patrolled the grounds.
Dan stood at the edge, staring wide-eyed. There are a lot of people hereâ¦
âDan? Is that you?â a voice called out.
Dan narrowed his eyes. (This asshole.) âYes, what do yoââ
Ezekielâs boot slammed into his chest, knocking him back.
âI thought I told you to give up on this stupid dream of yours,â Ezekiel spat, arms crossed. He wore noble robes, and blue chi flickered around him. âFace facts. Without abilities, you canât do anything.â
âShut up,â Dan snapped and threw a punchâbut Ezekiel weaved and blasted him with a pulse of sound energy.
A knight in red armor appeared, planting himself between them. A translucent barrier formed with a flick of his hand.
âHey, heyâif you continue, I will kick you both out,â the knight warned.
âSorry,â Dan muttered.
âWhere are my manners? Iâm sorry,â Ezekiel said with mock politeness.
âGood. You should settle this when the tournament starts,â the knight said.
âFine,â both boys replied.

Later, on the roof of the noodle shopâ¦
Dan sat alone, knees up, the breeze ruffling his hair as the stars began to emerge.
âDamn him⦠damn him!â he growled under his breath.
Footsteps padded up behind him.
âCome on, manâyou shouldnât be shouting on your birthday.â Damon, his best friend, held up a small box. âHere, take this present.â
Dan sighed. âSorry⦠itâs that damn Ezekiel. He bullies me because heâs a noble and has chi.â
âThat idiot. Should I go and beat him up?â
Dan laughed. âLike as if you could.â
âI know, right?â
Dan stared at the horizon. âRemember years ago⦠we used to get beaten up by those boys with chi?â
âYeah. Fighting back was always pointless. But after getting bruised, your mom used to patch us up and make sweets.â
Danâs face softened. âMy mom was the bestâ¦â
âI miss her too⦠from time to time.â
âWell⦠tomorrow, the Knight Exams begin.â
âThat stupid tournament. Do you reallyââ
âYes. I will become a knight. I wish you could become one with me.â
âNo way, dude. I want to be a traveler and see the whole world.â
âHaha⦠that means we might see each other someday.â
Damon smirked. âYeah, just donât die before then.â
Dan smiled. âOf course not.â
âGood luck tomorrowâand remember, buddy⦠Iâm your biggest fan.â
Dan nodded, a spark in his eyes.
âWhereâs your karate group?â Damon asked.
âLate-night practice.â
âHa!â

The Next Day: Tournament Grounds
A roaring crowd filled the arena. Dust kicked up from the stone tiles as fighters clashed.
âWow⦠these guys are the real deal,â Dan whispered from the sidelines.
âNext match-up!â the announcer boomed. âThe soundwave user Ezekiel vs. the karate, non-chi user⦠Dan!â
The crowd stirred.
âMy moneyâs on Ezekiel!â someone shouted. âWho else?â
Dan stood in the tunnel, breathing slowly. I can do this. Iâm Daniel Mori. I can do anything.
He stepped out.
Ezekiel grinned. âAre you sure you want to go through with this?â
âCome at me, fuckface.â
Ezekiel charged, unleashing blast after blast of sonic energy. Dan dodged, weavingâuntil one hit him squarely, sending him rolling. More blasts followed.
âWow! Ezekiel isnât showing any mercy!â the announcer yelled.
âYou still want to go?â Ezekiel said, releasing a blast toward Danâs face.
Dan lunged and grabbed his collar. âGot you.â
A knee to the groin. A strike to the throat. Karate punches and chops rained down like thunder. Dan pushed forwardâbut Ezekiel raised his palm and launched a massive blast, sending Dan flying.
âYou think youâre some protagonist? Gonna make a comeback? Youâre not,â Ezekiel sneered. He stomped Dan into the floor. âYouâre just a stupid, non-chi user who thinks he can be a knight. Youâre as useless as your mother. Your friends. Everyone in your life.â
âShut up!â
A punch to the ground. Ezekiel spotted the bracelet.
âWell, lookie here. Is it from someone special? OhâI get it. Your mom.â
Danâs eyes burned.
âWhatâll you do if I destroy it?â
âDonât you dareââ
CRACK.
Ezekiel shattered the bracelet with a sonic pulse, then blasted Dan hard in the chest, slamming him into the ground.
âWow! What an end!â the announcer called.
âEasy,â Ezekiel said.
But thenâ¦
Sparks.
Crackles.
Lightning danced around Danâs body. The crowd gasped. Ezekiel turned, ready to gloatâonly to be met by a blinding flash and a surge of electricity as Dan rose, lightning crackling around his arm, hand outstretchedâ
Ready to strike.
