It was the next day, and Dan had just arrived at the gate of the country.
Greg stood impatiently, scanning the area. âWhere is the lightning boy? You share drinks with a guy, and suddenly, you think you know them.â
DG, standing beside him, frowned. âSir, I really donât think you should be drinking with a kid.â
Greg smiled, a mischievous glint in his eyes. âHehe, well, I canât control myself sometimes.â
Vixen crossed her arms, her foot tapping against the ground. âSir, we shouldâve left thirty minutes ago. I swear, when I find that kid, Iâm going toââ
âHeyyyy, wait for me!â Dan yelled as he ran toward them, panting.
Vixen immediately wrapped her chains around him, her eyes narrowing. âYou! Where the hell have you been?â
Dan chuckled nervously. âErm⦠I slept late last night, and my older sister was hugging me for too long. Sorryâ¦â
Vixen glared at him but loosened the chains. âYouâre lucky the general decided to wait for you, or else youâd have been left behind to do the long travel on your own.â
Dan blinked. âLong travel? Wonât it take us three or four days to get there?â
Greg burst into laughter. âYou really are a funny one.â
DG explained, âWell, you see, the five nations use horses energized by a special substance. It makes traveling much faster.â
âYeah,â Vixen added. âDo you really think weâd waste three days getting to a kingdom under attack when we could get there in hours or a day?â
Danâs eyes lit up. âWow, thatâs amazing! So, how long will it take?â
âFive to eight hours,â Greg said with a grin.
âSuper fast!â Dan exclaimed.
Vixen sighed and shook her head. âAlright, weâre heading out.â
As they rode in the horse-drawn carriages, Dan leaned back and smiled to himself. âBoy, oh boy, I canât wait. Iâm going to the grand stage. I have to do itâlearn more, train more, express myself more. I will do it. I will become the Lightning King and prove Iâm the strongest knight.â
The group arrived the next day after an unexpected delay.
âI canât believe we had to stop yesterday because of those fallen trees,â Dan muttered as they approached the city gates. âAt least weâre finally here now.â
Greg turned to the group of candidates. âAlright, kiddos, head to your rooms. Weâll brief you on the event tomorrow.â
âYes, sir!â the contestants responded in unison.
Dan stared at the massive hotel in awe. âWow, this place is huge! Time to rest on a proper bed.â
Greg spoke to DG as the candidates scattered. âHave the other kids arrived yet?â
âYes, sir,â DG replied. âThough Ash had a tiny⦠incident the other day and wrecked a bar.â
If you find this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the infringement.
âThat idiot,â Greg muttered.
âLady Esther arrived yesterday too,â DG added.
âAnd White?â
âHe didnât show up. Said he had more important things to do.â
Greg smirked. âThis year is going to be⦠interesting.â
Dan wandered into the crowded lounge, struggling to find a seat amidst the throng of knights and candidates.
âThis place is packed,â he muttered, squeezing past several large men.
Nearby, a young girl was trying to move through the crowd as well. âHey! Move!â she shouted. She lost her balance and was about to fall when Dan rushed forward, catching her just in time.
âHey, bozo! The girl said move!â Dan snapped at the man blocking her path.
The man turned around, startled. âOh, sorry about that. Iâm just too pumped for the exams.â
Dan relaxed. âOh, okay. Hey, are you alright?â he asked the girl.
The girl, brushing herself off, nodded. âYeah, Iâm fine.â
Before Dan could say more, the girlâs companion appeared.
âRebecca, there you are!â the boy called out. âDid anything happen?â
âNothing at all,â Rebecca knight exam candidate from the lightning nation 16th branch replied quickly. âLetâs go.â
âFine,â the boy, Chase Knight exam candidate from the lightning nation 16th sub- branch muttered as they walked away.
Dan sighed and finally found an empty seat, only to see someone already sitting down.
âFinally a place toââ
âSit and relax,â the stranger finished with a grin.
âHuh? Who are you?â Dan asked, startled.
âOh, didnât see you there,â the boy said, looking around the room. âThis place is packed. I just needed a spot to sit and relax.â
Dan shrugged. âSame as me.â
The boy chuckled. âHope Iâm not disturbing you.â
âNah,â Dan replied. âOkay, since weâre both stuck here, itâd be weird not to talk. How old are you?â
âSixteen,â the boy said. âYou?â
Danâs eyes widened. âWow, same age! Where did you qualify from?â
âA kingdom in the Fire Continent. You?â
âSame,â Dan said with a grin. âFavorite food?â
âRice balls,â the boy replied.
âSame too!â Dan exclaimed. âFavorite drink?â
âBerry.â
Dan cringed. âEw. Mineâs mango juice.â
The two laughed and continued talking for a while.
Eventually, Dan stood up. âWow, look at the time. I need to get my room number. Bye! Oh, by the way, whatâs your name?â
âSamuel,â the boy said. âYou?â
âDan. See you later!â
âYeah.â
Dan got his room key and was taken to a special floor where all the children from the five nations were staying. Entering his room, he threw himself onto the bed.
âTime to relax,â he muttered.
Hours passed, but he couldnât sleep.
âOh, come on,â he groaned. âIâm too hyped up to sleep, and the exams arenât even tomorrow. Ugh, Iâll just go outside for a bit.â
Dan wandered outside, holding a bottle of mango juice in his hand.
âWhat aââ
âNight,â a familiar voice interrupted.
Dan turned and saw Samuel standing nearby.
âYou again?â Dan said with mock irritation.
âHey, what do you mean by that?â Samuel replied with a smirk.
âNothing.â
Samuel studied him for a moment. âAre you bothered by something?â
Dan sighed. âYeah. I canât sleep. Iâm too excited about the exams.â
âSame here,â Samuel admitted.
Dan perked up. âI forgot to askâwhat chi ability do you have?â
Samuel grinned. âLet me show you.â
He raised his hand to the sky and shot out a brilliant beam of light.
Danâs jaw dropped. âWaitâyou have light chi abilities? Thatâs freakinâ cool!â
Samuel smirked. âYeah, I know Iâm awesome. What about you?â
Dan straightened up. âLightning.â
Samuelâs mouth fell open. âWhat?! I thought you said you qualified from a Fire Nation kingdom!â
âI did,â Dan explained, âbecause I didnât know I had it. I was wearing a chi-blocker bracelet the whole time. Itâs⦠kinda complicated.â
Samuel stared at him in awe. âYouâre awesome, dude.â
Dan laughed. âThanks.â He smiled to himself. This guy is fun⦠he reminds me of Damon. Itâs okay for a guy to have two best friends, right?
The two talked until they were tired, then went back to their rooms to sleep.
The next morning, Dan woke up with a yawn. âWhat a night. Tomorrowâs the big day.â
A knock at the door startled him.
Dan opened it to find a man standing there.
âHello, Mr. Dan,â the man said politely.
âYes?â
âYouâre wanted in the main hall of the hotel,â the man explained.
âFor what?â
âThe children from all five nations participating in the exams are having a get-together.â
Dan hesitated but nodded. âOkay, Iâll be right there.â
On his way to the hall, he muttered to himself. âMy hands are shaking. Just stay calm. Iâm meeting the people from my nation for the first time⦠and others too. I just hope they donât judge me.â
Entering the hall, Dan plastered a smile on his face. He was about to greet everyone when a sword suddenly flew toward him. It missed him by a hair and embedded itself in the wall behind him.
Dan froze. âWhat the hell?! How did that sword almost hit me?â
A boy walked up to him, smiling nonchalantly.
âApologies if that harmed you,â the boy said, pulling the sword from the wall. âBut you should be smart enough to dodge it, since I didnât aim for you.â He turned and called out, âAnyways, how dare you, Steven, for knocking my sword out of my hand like that?â
Another boy stepped forward, glaring. âHow dare you point it at my face, asshole?â
The swordsman smirked and walked up to him. âSo what if I did? What will you doâbeat me?â
âDonât push me,â Steven growled.
Before things could escalate, a young man stepped between them, smiling.
âAsh, Knight Exams Candidate from the Ice Nationâs 10th Branch,â he said with an almost cheerful tone, âYou guys should chill out. Weâre all friends here!â
Steven, Knight Exams Candidate from the Fire Nationâs 6th Branch, and Alexis, Knight Exams Candidate from the Weapon Nationâs 3rd Branch (Sword Nation), turned to him in unison.
âDonât touch my shoulder, you disgusting idiot,â Steven growled, shrugging Ashâs hand off.
âYeah, get your hand off my hair,â Alexis snapped, swatting Ash away.
Ashâs grin didnât falter. âOh, come on. Letâs be nice to each other, huh?â
Dan stood at the entrance, frozen. He watched the three with wide eyes as their overwhelming auras seemed to dominate the entire room.
What the hell? Why do these three stand out the most? And why does their presence fe
el so terrifying? Who the hell are they?
Dan swallowed hard, quietly stepping aside as the candidates continued their tense standoff. His smile from earlier had faded completely, replaced by a mixture of fear and awe.
