[1] For those who didn’t understand, bikes were not common in China until the early nineties, and therefore, having one was considered awesome. In this part of the story, Guo Chao Ming says that because he feels that a cat shouldn’t be so particular when taking a bath.

[2] Idiomatic expression ‘脸上贴金 (liǎn shàng tiē jīn)’: lit. translation ‘covering the face with gold’. It means that someone exaggerates facts about oneself to beautify them, with the objective of gaining favor from others.

[3] ‘老人家 (lǎo rén jiā)’ is a polite term to refer to older people. We used the pinyin, but ‘elder’ could have been used in place. Tell us what you think.
