âAre you looking forward to being back at Deva?â Blandus asked Esma as they stood watching the auxiliary soldiers run about the fortress.
Twelve weeks had passed and they were due back in Deva by the weeks end, the auxiliary were weary and ready for the comforts of settled life, eager to get back to their families. The outposts had arrived back late last night and were the last to sort themselves out; Esma was standing with Blandus by the south gate waiting for the centurions to finish barking their orders.
âYes.â She shrugged after a few moments thought, enough for him to know she was lying.
âLiar.â He stated frowning, his arms folded across his chest and he kept his features schooled into a calm mask. âTell me the truth.â
âWill we still be like this in Deva?â she asked and he shrugged. âI like this; I hated being your property.â
âYou still are my property.â He reminded, a ghost of humour passing his eyes when he glanced down at her.
âYou know what I mean; you actually recognise Iâm a person now.â
âOpposed to a pot?â he asked and she pursed her lips in frustration.
âMaybe I am looking forwards to it, youâll be busier therefore have less time to annoy me with your lack of humour.â She snapped making him laugh loudly.
âAh, but you want babies, so youâll be around me much more often.â He reminded and she blushed nodding, guilt riding through her veins. âShe remembers!â
âShut up.â I grunted as he slung an arm around my waist, pulling me against him.
I wasnât disgusted; in fact it was almost nice, it was a comfortable embrace, friendly. I patted his chest and pulled away before I sneezed.
âWho am I riding with?â I asked, because recently Iâd been going up before him on the rare occasion.
âAlbus, Iâm not having you sneeze all over me and anyway, I like my space.â He stated pushing my head playfully before walking off barking orders at the auxiliary who were practically falling over each other.
âBróðorlufu.â Love. Albus whispered as she slipped to his side, her cheeks blushed red instantly, âGemæccaâ Wife.
âYou should stop that.â She whispered and he shrugged, his eyes burning into hers, âOther people can speak it.â
âAh, none in hearing distance.â He laughed throwing an arm over her shoulder as he did every day. âLooking forwards to riding with me again?â
Esma bit back a laugh as she nodded, âYouâre a good conversationalist.â
âBlandus, youâre teaching her long words already.â He shouted out to Blandus who simply shrugged him off with a hand gesture.
Esma rolled her eyes and tore herself away from Albus towards his horse; sheâd enjoyed the freedom of being at Hadrianâs more than she wanted to admit. With Blandus going between the mile castles on a regular basis sheâd not had to sneak away to Albus, it had been a skip. Now they were heading back to Deva, where her room was against Blandus and Albus was in the barracks with the rest of the centurions.
âDonât think too hard.â Albus whispered standing behind her to fasten the straps of the saddle. âIâll find a way to keep you close.â
âIâll miss this⦠Can we run away and start a new life together?â she asked and he chuckled despite himself.
âI thought you were growing to like your husband.â
âI like him sure, but Albus I need you like I need air.â His hand cupped her cheek affectionately as he fought the urge to take her right there.
âLittle dramatic bróðorlufu, I wouldnât have you any other way.â
âShame, I prefer you clean.â She stated as Juan and Felix headed their way, âpop me up.â
âSheâs getting lazy.â Felix stated with a grin as Juan smirked, âThat or youâre getting stupid.â
âSo what you gonna do when weâre back at Deva?â Juan asked kissing the horseâs nose. âYou two cannot carry on sleeping together, thatâs for sure.â
âWhat?â Albus growled as Esma blanched in her seat.
âWe only know because we thought youâd like company one night and you already had it.â Felix shrugged, âJuan, stop kissing the horse itâs a male.â
âIdiot.â Esma hissed kicking Albusâ shoulder. âWould be your fault.â
âMy fault?â
âYour friends.â
âIâm hurt.â Juan pouted up at Esma, âI thought I was your friend.â
âYou three are impossible.â She stated shaking her head.
âSo, what you going to do?â Felix asked, pulling it back to the point. âWe want to help, itâs romantic.â
âJust what we can.â Albus shrugged, âBlandus doesnât want her really; he wonât notice sheâs gone during the days.â
âRomantic.â Felix teased rolling his eyes, âWe can cover for you if we know when youâre disappearing, just remember that.â
âThank you.â Esma grinned leaning down and wrapping her arms around the Germanâs shoulders.
âAnything for you little sister.â He winked before disappearing with Juan.
Albus smirked as he settled behind Esma, her body slotted perfectly against his own in the saddle. His mind ran wild to situations heâd previously thought of impossible, his hand slipped between her legs making her squeak indignantly at him.
âSorry, that for later?â he murmured against her ear as she fought to restrain the blush. âIâm already scheming in that direction gemæcca.â
âIâm not your wife.â She sighed wishing it wasnât true.
âYou are my mate, my companion, my love; what part of that isnât gemæcca?â he asked and she shook her head as her eyes danced with joy.
