Esma sat beside the river watching the fast water flow past, the occasional duck sitting on its skin gliding effortlessly from one side to the other. Daisy was by her side mixing the herbs theyâd collected earlier for a poultice, sheâd missed her only female friend, and Daisy had missed her too.
âI still canât get over the fact Juan got you pregnant.â Esma laughed looking over at her friend once more, her rounded stomach more prominent than ever. âIâm looking forwards to it.â
âMe too.â Daisy grinned gripping Esmaâs hand tightly, âYouâll be his aunty right?â
âOf course.â She laughed kissing Daisyâs hand. âIâll help as much as possible, my brother Ed turned out a good lad.â
âWas it nice being home again?â she asked a wistful tone to her voice.
âHeart breaking.â Esma admitted, âIâve missed so much and Iâve only been away a year, well nearly a year. Edwinâs taller than me, Ceolwulf is hanging after a girl from the village a mile away and Fyrenâs started wrestling bulls for entertainment.â
Daisy laughed, she couldnât help herself, âYour Fyren sounds like a handful.â
âYou wouldnât believe, Juan stole my spoon!â she exclaimed making Daisyâs laughter turn into howls as tears flowed down her cheeks. âApparently, theyâre dangerous.â
âOnly if wielded by an older sister.â She grinned before turning serious, âIâm surprised youâre not pregnant.â
âWhy would you say that?â Esma asked turning away from Daisyâs all seeing eyes to stare at Handbridge over the river.
âJuan told me about you and Albus, I told you he liked you.â She stated pulling Esmaâs attention back to her, âIâm happy for you Es, I just wish it wasnât secret.â
âMe too.â She sighed, âWe should find Felix a lady friend.â
Daisyâs mouth fell open before it spread into a grin, âWho could argue with a pregnant lady and the wife of Blandus?â
âExactly, weâll have them cornered.â She grinned turning around to make sure Felix wasnât in hearing distance as they started to plot and plan their revenge for the gentle giant.
---
Almost frowned as he watched Esma heave Daisy onto the city walls and grin at every soldier they passed, leaving each watching them smitten as they carried on. He elbowed Juan who smirked and shook his head.
âLetâs see where theyâre going first.â It didnât take long for the two women to back Felix into a corner, one on each arm as he looked around madly for help. âI think theyâre setting him up with some poor woman theyâve threatened.â
âMy sweet Esma?â Albus asked quietly as Juan grinned, âThis has Daisy written all over it.â
âYes, but sweet Esma seems to be leading the way.â
âThatâs because Daisy canât move very fast.â He smirked, âShould we go and help him?â
âNo, itâs time Felix had some fun.â
âThatâs not what he thinks; I think I can hear him screaming in fear already.â Both men grinned at each other before swapping their stations with the next guards and returning to the pub, eager to watch Felix be tortured from a safe distance.
âDo you think itâs that fat one with the six children?â Juan teased as we settled into a darkened corner.
âIâm not sure, theyâve done one of two things; gone for someone funny or someone perfect.â
âDaisyâs pregnant so funny.â Juan grinned, âBut then itâs Esma, so perfect more likely.â
They watched as Esma forced Felix to stay seated, a metal spoon in her hand as Daisy disappeared out of the pub, the door beside them swung open nearly hitting Juan as Blandus entered the pub. Albus grabbed his arm and yanked him down.
âWhy are you touching me?â Blandus sneered looking at the other men. âIâm here to collect my wife and be gone soâ¦â
âEsma and Daisy have set Felix up with someone, weâre watching.â Albus stated grabbing another beer off the bar and putting it before Blandus. âThis is going to be entertaining.â
âThat huge German you hang around with?â he asked, the sneer dropping in curiosity.
âOver there, Esmaâs guarding him with a spoon.â Juan nodded pointing to them, âA beer says sheâs fat.â
âShe wouldnât do that, sheâs probably really young and innocent.â Blandus stated, âAnd a beer says Iâm right.â
âYou donât know my Daisy.â Juan smirked shaking his head.
---
Felix sat glaring at the woman heâd called little sister; he was ready to disown her, that Daisy was a bad influence â Juan deserved her 100%. He made a mental note to avoid their child; itâs got to be a monster.
âCome on, weâre not terrible.â Esma grinned from beside him, the large metal spook resting against her shoulder, âWeâre only doing this âcus we love you and want you to be happy.â
âI was happy on the wall.â He muttered as Esma leant against his shoulder, âWhy do women insist on finding other women for their single men?â
âSo we can have more friends.â She teased making him smirk despite himself.
âShe better not be fat.â He stated poking her arm, âOr a child, or old or-â
âSheâs perfect.â Esma grinned as the door swung open, âLook, how much we love you.â
Felix looked over to where Daisy was walking in, pushing a young woman forwards. She looked about eighteen, her blonde hair had been pulled back in twists away from her face; her father ran the inn. Her cheeks were red in embarrassment as she sat down opposite him, Daisy by her elbow and Esma by his.
âIâm sorry about these two, I hope they didnât terrify you.â He smiled nudging his head up at the two standing women.
âYouâre a lot bigger close up.â She managed and he laughed shrugging.
âHeâs a gentle giant are you Felix?â Esma butted in nodding eagerly.
âAre you two going to stay here so we canât escape?â he asked and they nodded.
âMy father only agreed as long as it was in the pub and they didnât leave.â the blonde admitted looking over at the bar where her father was keeping an eye on them. âIâm Hazel.â
âFelix.â He stated, shrugging before offering her his hand as he would a man. âSo, youâre father runs the inn.â
âYes, I help out; my brothers are all over the place with the army.â
âDo you help him brew?â he asked and she nodded.
Esma looked over their heads as they chatted about the best types of beer and winked at Daisy who was grinning like an idiot. She looked over to where sheâd spotted Albus sneak in earlier, only to see her husband also. Her heart sank, having hoped to have snuck off with him before sheâd had to return.
âTold you!â Blandus laughed as Juan walked to the bar and bought another beer before placing it before Blandus. âYou think I donât know women, I can tell you more than you think.â
Albus winked over at her and Esmaâs heart fluttered about her body; he nodded his head down to the three tankards of beer before Blandus and sent her a wink.
âLooks like youâre getting some tonight.â Daisy whispered having seen the interaction also.
âI love him.â She whispered back, âLike seriously, I canât stand it sometimes; almost like I love him too much.â
âI see nothing wrong with that.â She smiled sitting down on the table next to them, âMy feet feel about six foot wide.â
âLovely.â Esma laughed, âThey look it too, Iâve never seen anyoneâs ankles that swollen!â
âCan I have a foot rub?â she pouted, âJuan has a thing about feet, he hates them.â
âStrange.â Esma laughed wanting to help her friend and sitting opposite her, within armâs reach of Hazel and began to rub at the swelling. âI love you Daisy.â
âLove you too Es.â She sighed enjoying the massage. âYouâre the sister I never knew.â
