Albus bit his cheek in an effort to keep his mind from Esmaâs hand; her small slender fingers were currently wrapped around his thigh as she looked over the edge of the road they were travelling along, up the edge of a mountain.
âThis is stunning.â She sighed running a hand along his leg.
Albus knew it was a habit of hers to do this, heâd seen her do it hundreds of times as they stood watching the sunrise over the fortifications. But lord she had no idea what she was doing to him. Esma turned around and he looked down, realising her lips were an inch away from his just a small jolt of the horse would push them together.
âWhere about are we?â she asked slipping back into her native tongue through her excitement.
âIn Cumbria, weâve been on the maiden way for the past three days. Whitley Castle is just a few hours ahead.â He stated and she nodded grinning.
âWhatâs Whitley Castle like?â she gushed falling against his chest as they turned a corner and she could no longer see over the edge. âIt sounds impressive.â
âItâs an auxiliary fort, pretty but out in the open. Itâs quite small but has everything we need.â He shrugged as she rested her head against his shoulder.
âI donât want to get there.â She whispered, âI want to stay here forever.â
âItâll be nice to get off this damn horse though.â Albus smirked leaning his chin against her shoulder. âYouâve changed your hair.â
Esma flushed bright red at his comment, sheâd recently adopted the roman way of styling hair, instead of letting her ginger main flow free about her shoulders reined in with a strategic plait; sheâd wrapped ribbons around her head, with instructions from Daisy of course.
âYeah, I thought Iâd fit in.â she shrugged leaning forwards to scratch the horseâs ears.
âOnly a few of us are actually Roman.â Albus stated with a shrug. âI did wonder why I wasnât getting whipped in the face.â
âYou are as bad as my brothers!â she exclaimed slapping his knee as he laughed loudly. âOh itâs raining.â
Albus shook off the laughter and pulled the thick cloak around them, shielding them both from the cold droplets that were beginning to fall quickly from the sky. His hand rested against her stomach beneath the cloak, enjoying the proximity theyâd shared the past two nights.
âAre you feeling alright?â Albus asked as memories from last night came rushing back, Blandus had ordered her to his tent and when sheâd come back to hers thereâd been seconds before the tears started. âThe ride not too strenuous?â
âNo.â she sighed glancing over to where Blandus was ordering his canopy type thing to be brought forwards. âI just wish heâd brought a man.â
Not caring, also knowing that no one could see Albus wrapped an arm around her waist in a strong embrace. She melted against his chest, schooling her features so they didnât show just how upset she was and how much Albus was comforting her.
âHow long till we get there?â Juan asked as his horse fell into step beside them. âMy balls are red raw.â
âNice, in front of the lady.â Albus snorted shaking his head as his friend leant against the horseâs neck.
âSheâs got brothers.â He shrugged. âI hate Whitley Castle, the village is so small.â
âAww poor Juan, used to big cities.â Esma teased pouting playfully at him.
âHow are Felixâs gloves?â He asked with a frown, changing the subject of the conversation.
âThe skins are still drying and will be for at least another week.â Esma sighed, âJust like I said yesterday, you really have become another brother.â
âLove me?â he asked grinning as she shrugged and fell back against Alâs chest as he watched the interaction. Â âIâve heard one of the soldierâs likes boys.â
âReally?â Albus whispered looking back over his shoulder. âDo you think he can be persuaded to . . . come out?â
âWell, if it means he can be Blandus toy, I doubt heâll be too put off.â Juan shrugged before shivering. âIâd be put off, rather have you Al than Blandus.â
âIâd rather let the dog take me than you Flavius, youâre a beast.â Albus laughed as Juan smirked nodding his head in agreement.
âHave you got any siblings Juan?â Esma asked, feeling uncomfortable with all the crude talk.
âSix brothers, Iâm the youngest.â He replied with a smirk, âHence why I was shoved off to be a Gladiator at fifteen.â
âThatâs so sad.â She pouted, âAlbus, have you got any?â
âNone that Iâd admit too.â He stated sending her a wink.
She felt him change behind her, when ten minutes ago he was soft muscle cradling her against him now he was a solid wall like those of the fortress. Heâd gone back behind his armour; sheâd pushed him too far without knowing it.
âDonât mind him, youâd be embarrassed too.â Juan stated before galloping ahead and craning his neck to see into the distance.
âIâm sorry, I shouldnât have pried.â She whispered once they were alone once more.
âDonât apologise.â He sighed, âThereâs nothing anyone can do about the siblings I have.â
âI heard you and Blandus arguing.â She whispered and he nodded.
âIllegitimate.â He stated in a low voice directly into her ear. âItâs not as much of me not being accepted as I not wanting to accept them.â
âI understand.â She whispered. âIâd feel jealous if I wasnât like my brothers, and then Iâd resent them and in the end if they werenât nice people Iâd not want to be known as like them.â
âOnly a mile off, race?â Juan shouted back.
âFancy it?â Albus asked.
âOh yes.â Esma grinned as they sprinted forwards leaving the shouts and commands of Blandus behind them.
