The sun had already dipped low when Valen emerged from the second-floor stairs of the Dungeon. His boots hit the stone with a heavy thud, legs trembling under the weight of fatigue. The dungeon behind him shimmered as if satisfied, its eerie pulse dimming. The magic locking the second-floor boss chamber had lifted, and the gateway had reopened.
Valen took one last glance at the entrance.
He didnât smile. Didnât boast.
He simply breathed.
His chest rose and fell, blood still pounding in his ears from the battle against the Elite Venomfang Widow. He could still feel the tension in his fingers where they had gripped his new blades, could still hear the echo of its final screech as it crumbled into dark mist.
"A clean kill," he muttered, though his shredded shoulder and aching ribs argued otherwise.
He crouched beside a moss-covered boulder and rummaged through his worn satchel. Inside, carefully stashed, were the spoils of war:
* A bundled pelt of midnight spider silk.
* The glistening venom sac of the Elite Widow.
* A cluster of high-grade mana stones, harvested from the spiderâs chamber.
* And most precious: the Spider Fang Duel Blades, humming faintly even while sheathed.
Valen wrapped the loot carefully and stood. The forest surrounding Fenward was beginning to darken, long shadows stretching through the pines. He shifted his stance, rotating his shoulder with a wince. His stamina had returned enough for the hike back, but just barely.

An hour later, the village gates came into view. Fenward Village, quiet and unassuming, was tucked beneath the jagged cliffside where the dungeon loomed. Smoke rose lazily from chimneys, casting orange glows in the windows as evening settled.
A few adventurers milled about near the guild hall. One of them, a Copper-rank with mismatched armor, gave Valen a once-over.
"Huh. You look like hell. Fall into a spike trap?"
Valen didnât answer. He brushed past and entered the Fenward Adventurerâs Guild, its warm interior lit by enchanted lanterns and buzzing with the usual hum of tired mercenaries and drink-slicked laughter.
The receptionist, a silver-haired elf named Lira, perked up as he approached. Her smile faltered slightly at the sight of his bruised state.
"Valen. Back already? We weren't expecting you for another week."
He said nothing and unstrapped his satchel, placing its contents gently on the wooden counter. Lira blinked as the silk unfurled.
"Gods above... Is that Widow silk? That shimmer... thatâs from an Elite."
Gasps and muttering erupted behind him. Several adventurers leaned closer.

Lira bent to inspect the venom sac, her hands glowing softly with appraisal magic. "Purity 93%... Extremely potent. Youâd need gloves to even transport this normally."
Valen gave a one-shoulder shrug.
She moved on to the mana stones. "Five... no, six high-grade stones. From the same source?"
"All from the second floor."
Liraâs eyes snapped up to his.
"You fought the boss."
He nodded.
"Alone?"
Another nod.
A hush fell across the guild. A grizzled veteran near the fire spat out his drink.
"Kidâs either suicidal or stupidly strong. Maybe both."
Lira composed herself, though her fingers trembled slightly as she began scribbling down figures.
"Market price for the silk alone is... twelve silver. The venom sac will fetch at least ten, possibly more from alchemists in the capital. Mana stones... Iâll log these at nine silver each, conservative estimate. That brings you to..." she paused, calculating. "...eighty-five silver total."
Your total, minus guild fees, is seventy-six silver and eight copper."
Valen accepted the coin pouch without ceremony. Heavy. Satisfying.
He was only one gold and two silver short of the spatial bag he'd been saving for all these years.

Back at the forge, Clyde was already hammering away, sweat gleaming on his arms as sparks danced in the low firelight. He turned as Valen entered.
"You look like you crawled out of a warzone."
"Not far off."
Valen set the coin pouch on the bench. Clyde raised a brow.
"That what I think it is?"
"Spider silk. Widow venom. Mana stones."
Clyde gave a low whistle. "You fought that thing already? Most adventurers donât touch the second floor until theyâre in their twenties."
Valen handed him the Spider Fang Duel Blades. "New weapons. See if they need any reinforcement."
Clyde examined them, nodding with grudging approval. "Lightweight. Reinforced bone for the handle. Core still hums. These are well-made. Looks like youâre moving up in the world."
Valen looked away. "Still not enough."
Clyde clapped a hand on his shoulder. "Youâre doing more than most seasoned warriors. Just donât burn yourself out chasing ghosts."
Valen didnât respond. He stepped outside, letting the night air cool his skin.

At home, he finally sat down cross-legged and opened his status screen.

Valen stared at the screen.
The numbers were higher. The stats more respectable. But it still didnât feel like enough.
The mysterious power he'd unleashed as a boyâthe strike that had shattered the Wardens egoâstill eluded him. It wasnât listed. Not on his skills. Not in his flow.
And yet he felt closer. A flicker in the corner of his mind. A rhythm.
"Swordmasterâs Flow..."
He whispered it like a prayer.
Then he sheathed his new blades.
The village slept around him.
But somewhere, deep in the forest near the dungeon, a pair of eyes watched the trail he had taken. Glinting. Calculating.
