Zaire's POV
The room had finally fallen silent, but the unease lingered in the air, thick and heavy. The man was gone, and the gunshots had stopped echoing, but something wasnât right. Zaâmiyah stood there, her face pale, her body rigid with fear. I could see it in her eyesâshe was questioning everything, just as I knew she would.
I glanced back at the window. It was dark outside, but I could still hear the distant hum of engines. Someone was watching. Someone always was. The game didnât stop when the gunshots ended. It just got darker.
I took a deep breath, my hand brushing over my gun.
âZaire, we need to talk,â Malikâs voice came through my phone, urgent, like a warning. He knew me well enough to know when something wasnât right.
âI know,â I muttered, rubbing my temples. âCome by the spot. Bring Giovanni and Zoey.â
Malik didnât respond right away, but I could feel the weight of his silence. He understood that this wasnât just about me anymore. This was bigger than all of us. And I didnât know if I could keep Zaâmiyah safe in the middle of it.
I closed my eyes, willing myself to think. This wasnât just about a fight or a rival gang. Someone wanted to break me, break everything I had built. And they were going after Zaâmiyah, whether she knew it or not.
I had to make sure she knew what she was dealing with.

Malikâs POV
I stood outside the apartment, hands in my pockets, scanning the streets. The night felt too quiet, too still. There was a storm brewing in the air, and I wasnât sure if it was the city or something deeperâthe kind of tension that settled in your bones when everything started to unravel.
Zaireâs call had thrown me off. I could tell from the tone of his voice that something was wrong. He was too calm and too collected when things were falling apart. He only acted like that when his world was getting rocked when there was danger in the air. And Zaire didnât call for backup unless he had no other choice.
I looked over at Giovanni and Zoey, standing beside me. Giovanni had been quiet all night, his eyes fixed on the ground, a rare sight for someone who always had a swagger in his step. Zoey, on the other hand, was as fiery as ever, but even she couldnât ignore the tension that hung around us like a thick fog.
âDo you think itâs about her?â Zoey asked, breaking the silence. She hadnât even mentioned Zaâmiyahâs name yet, but we all knew who she meant.
I nodded, feeling the weight of the question. Zaâmiyah was the one thing that Zaire had been hesitant about from the start. She was different from the women who usually surrounded usâdifferent from the ones who saw this life as a game. Zaâmiyah was innocent, naïve even, and Zaire had taken her into his world, despite the danger. That meant something.
âShe doesnât belong in this world, and yetâ¦â I trailed off, not wanting to voice the fear that had been gnawing at me.
Zoey looked at Giovanni, her eyes hard. âIf anyoneâs going after her, theyâll regret it.â
Giovanni finally spoke up, his voice low but firm. âYou know how Zaire works. This is just the beginning. Whoeverâs messing with him wonât stop until theyâve destroyed everything heâs built. And that includes her.â
I glanced at him, watching as he adjusted the collar of his jacket, the same calculated confidence in his stance that he always had. Giovanni was a man of few words, but when he spoke, everyone listened. Heâd seen Zaire through his rise to power and had been with him through all the chaos that came with it.
And now it was hitting the fan.
âWe need to be ready,â I said, my voice flat. âWhateverâs coming, we canât let it catch us off guard.â
Zoey narrowed her eyes. âWe need to get to Zaire. Now.â

Giovanniâs POV
I could feel the tension in the air, but there was a sense of calm that came with the storm. I didnât like it, but it was the kind of calm you get used to when youâve been in this game long enough.
Malik was right. Zaire was about to go through something big, something that would test every boundary he had. And when Zaire was tested, we all felt it.
Zaâmiyah was the wild card. She didnât belong in this world, but that didnât matter now. She was in it, and no matter how hard Zaire tried to shield her, the reality of the situation was sinking in. The longer she stayed with him, the deeper she would fall into this life.
I could see the look on Malikâs face, the doubt clouding his features. He had always been the loyal one, the one who trusted Zaire with everything. But now, even he wasnât sure if Zaireâs choices were leading them down the right path.
We were headed toward Zaireâs apartment when I saw a flash of headlights approaching in the distance. Something about the way the car sped through the streets told me it wasnât just a regular visitor. It was someone who knew exactly where they were going.
I glanced at Malik. He caught my look and immediately moved toward the car, his body tense, ready for whatever was coming.
âWhatâs happening?â Zoey asked, her eyes scanning the street.
âNothing good,â I said flatly, my hand brushing against the gun at my side.
As the car pulled up, I recognized the driver immediately: a familiar face, someone we hadnât seen in months.
It was Damani.
Damani had been a part of Zaireâs crew years ago before things went south. He was one of the ones who had disappeared after the fallout, but here he was, showing up unannounced, his eyes wild with panic.
âI need to talk to Zaire,â Damani said, his voice low but urgent. âItâs bad, real bad.â
Malikâs eyes narrowed, his body stiffening. âWhat do you mean, bad?â
Damani looked around nervously like he was expecting someone to jump out from the shadows. âZaireâs in trouble, man. Serious trouble. The people heâs been dealing withâtheyâre not playing anymore.â
I could feel the shift in the air, like the calm before the storm had passed.
And everything was about to change.
---
Zoeyâs POV
I didnât like this. I didnât like any of it.
Damani was bad news, and his sudden appearance made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. We hadnât seen him in forever, and now he was here, acting like the world was crashing down on him.
I exchanged a glance with Malik. He was always the first to pick up on danger, and right now, he was as tense as I was.
âWhereâs Zaire?â I asked, my voice sharp, cutting through the tension in the air.
Damani turned to me, his expression grim. âHeâs in too deep. This isnât just about street politics anymore. Itâs personal. Whoeverâs coming for him is coming hard, and theyâve got nothing left to lose.â
I swallowed hard, a sick feeling creeping into my stomach. It wasnât just about a gang war. Whoever was after Zaire wasnât going to stop until they had everything.
I wasnât going to lose him. Not like this.
