Chapter 11
âDon, do you prefer chicken potato soup or barley soup?â Gisele asked, her voice soft. There was a hint of joy in her voler as she looked at Dorian.

Dorlanâs face darkened. He held his breath for a moment before he spoke into the phone,â Pâll call you a bit later.â
On the other end of the line, Sierra stiffened the moment she heard Giseleâs voice. Before she could respond, Dorian had already hung up on her.
He said he would call her back later. Was he going to teach Gisele a lesson?
What will he do to her, though?
Sterraâs slender hands balled tightly into fists, making her fingernails dig into her palms. Still, she didnât react to the pain, even if she felt it.
Gisele averted her gaze from Dorian. She was about to leave when he stopped her.
He stood before her, his dashing face demanding authority like always.
âAre you happy now?â He spat the words out.
âWhy should I be?â Gisele raised her head slightly to meet his cool gaze. For a brief, fleeting moment, she felt the urge to gasp out of fright and run back to her bedroom to hide.
But her gaze fell on that spot at the bottom of the stairs where she had fallen the other day, and the cowardice that threatened to overtake her vanished immediately.
It had never been her fault. Why did she have to make herself seem so low and pathetic?
Dorian looked her up and down, and as he did so, he noticed how fair her skin was. Back then, Giseleâs beautiful eyes would purposely avoid his gaze, albeit in a rather unnatural
manner.
Now, they met his gaze steadily, full of determination.
âVery good.â Dorian could only utter these two words after so long.
Gisele had no idea what he meant by that, but she didnât want to torture herself by giving it much thought.
She grabbed a glass of water and went back to her room. Later, she got a call from Angie.
âGigi? Did you go back there again?â Angie asked. âDonât tell me that you pitied that jerk and forgave him for what he did.â.

Angie sounded frustrated, yet Gisele could sense the hesitance in her voice as she gingerly asked that question.
After drinking some water, Gisele sat on the couch in her room, leaned back, and closed her eyes to get some rest.
âThat madman dragged me back here,â she said. âBut Iâll leave this hell of a place very soon.
âHuh?â Angie was puzzled. Gisele then briefed her on what had happened the day before.
âDonât worry, though,â she said, brushing a stray strand of hair from her forehead. âIâll get rid of it quickly.â
âOkay then,â Angie said, sounding worried. âThen, will your
Before she could finish, another call came in. Gisele frowned.
âMy dadâs calling. Talk to you later,â she said.
âOkay.â
After hanging up, Gisele answered Peterâs call. She was mentally prepared for his barrage of reprimands, but what greeted her was his gleeful voice.
âOh, my sweet daughter, weâve managed to ship out our goods! I knew youâd do your job to help me settle this problem!â The joy in his voice was as clear as day.
He continued, âCan you not blame me for scolding you yesterday? Youâre married now, so you should obey your husbandâs wishes. Our family gets to live a better life as long as you make Mr. Jefferson happy.â
Gisele listened to him speak in silence. She laughed bitterly on the inside. 1
So, that was what Dorian had meant by âvery goodâ earlier. It was because she hadnât left when he had threatened her the night before.
Even though he was an illegitimate descendant of the Jefferson family, his wit and intelligence won the hearts and admiration of many in the business field.
His control over all his employees and subordinates was practically unmatched.
The method of punishing others and rewarding them for their work wasnât unheard of. Still, Peter seemed to enjoy being trapped in Dorianâs grasp.
Apparently, he thought it was Dorianâs gift to them..
Gisele inhaled deeply. Then, she voiced the question she had kept to herself for some time.

âDad, has our company not seen any improvements at all for the past three years?â
What had happened in the last two days wasnât new. It would definitely happen again. Where had Meyer Groupâs money gone?
âWhat now? So, you want to get money from us because you helped us with something?â Peter snapped.
âHave you forgotten that youâre no longer a part of this family? Whatever happens to the company has nothing to do with you!â
He carried on with his yelling. âAll you need to do is take good care of Mr. Jefferson and give birth to his child!â
With that said, he abruptly hung up.
Gisele leaned back on the couch and stared up at the ceiling in silence.
Just then, someone knocked on her door. She then heard Jessieâs voice.
âMadam Gisele, Mr. Dorian said he wants to have his porridge by nine oâclock.â
âGot it,â Gisele responded as she got up from the couch.
Regardless of what had happened, Dorian had helped the Meyers with their business. Even if she didnât feel like it, she still had to do what she was told for the sake of her family. 1
She recomposed herself and walked to the door. When she opened it, she saw Jessie standing
in the doorway..
âMadam Gisele, itâs not like I donât want to make the porridge for Mr. Jefferson,â Jessie explained helplessly. âItâs just that heâs used to having the porridge you make.â
âItâs fine, Jessie. I get it,â Gisele replied with a smile.
If she hadnât insisted on making Dorian food every day for the past three years, he wouldnât have gotten used to her cooking. She was the one to blame for this.
Gisele scoffed. Just about anyone could live after losing someone in their life. That was whyâ¦
An indecipherable look flashed across her face. Suddenly, she seemed to be in a good mood.
It was as though she had figured everything out. She was no longer indecisive or unsettled.
Jessieâs heart broke for Gisele. She knew just how much Gisele had suffered.
After all, Jessie was the only person who knew Giseleâs suffering since she had been there by the latterâs side every day.
Chapter 11
Somehow, Gisele seemed to possess this sort of magical ability, which gave her the streng and resilience to do whatever she wished.
Dorian stared at his laptop screen in the study, occupied with work. All of a sudden, there was a commotion downstairs.
Furrowing his brows, he glanced at the door of the study.
The soundproofing qualities of the walls in Jefferson Manor werenât that bad, not to mention the 15âfoot height of the ceiling, which reduced any noise from reaching the second floor.
Usually, the noise from downstairs couldnât be heard on the second floor. Soon, he heard the noise again and again.
Dorian scowled. He hadnât slept well enough the night before, hence his foul mood. Standing up, he massaged his temples and opened the door.
He left the study and headed downstairs to see what was going on..
Gisele ran all over the room with a wooden bat in one hand and a basin in another, chasing a halfâplucked chicken.
The chicken had a wound on its neck, and it dashed around the house without any intention of slowing down.
Dorian watched in astonishment as the chicken ran around, dripping blood on the clean white tiles of the house. His face turned as dark as the midnight sky.
âGisele!â He forced the words through gritted teeth. âWhat the hell are you doing?â
In the middle of the messy living room, Gisele stopped running. She raised her head to look
at him.
âWhat? Have you never seen a person kill a chicken?â she asked. âDidnât you say you wanted to have potato chicken soup?â
That said, a look of annoyance flashed across her face, as if she were blaming him. She then continued her pursuit of the halfâplucked chicken that was halfâalive.
A vein pulsed on Dorianâs temple. He didnât believe that it would take so much effort to kill a chicken.
He wouldnât believe that the person who sent the cooking ingredients wouldnât have the decency to kill the chicken before sending meat to the manor either.

After Gisele had chased the chicken for about five minutes, it lost too much blood and stopped running for good. Gisele grabbed the chicken firmly by its neck.
Before Gisele went back into the kitchen, she waved at him with the chicken in one hand and beamed. âIâll be right back! Your meal will be served soon!â she said.
Her voice was as sweet as honey that seeped into his heart. Only then did Dorian realize that Giseleâs voice actually sounded pleasant to the ears.
Gisele prepared the food really quickly. After cleaning the ingredients, she tossed them into a pot to simmer. The steps to make the chicken potato soup were very easy.
Time passed. Soon, it was 11:00 am.
Gisele stood beside the dining table in an immaculate chefâs uniform and an apron tied to her waist.
Dorian stared at the food on the table with an unpleasant look on his face.
He gritted his teeth and asked, âAre you sure you didnât prepare this out of spite?â
