She was both pleasantly surprised and astonished by his thorough preparation.
âYou thought about so much in such a short time?â
Jean was strolling aimlessly with her, a slight smile playing on his lips.
âOf course, this is for you, so naturally, Iâll do my best until the end. I was thinking, when the time comes for us to have our wedding, we could also do it here if you like it.â
Coincidentally, just as Neera was immersing herself in the delightful scenery here, she had the same thought.
A wave of sweetness welled up in her heart as though she had plunged into a jar of honey. Her heart danced and bounded with delight.
Just as the thought of their wedding filled her with joy, happiness spreading from the depths of her heart, the untimely vibration of her phone disrupted the warm and sweet atmosphere.
Neera was worried about something happening to the Gordon family, so she didnât dare to ignore it and quickly answered the call.
However, the subsequent words abruptly altered the color of her face.
âHow could this happen? Okay, okay, I understand. Iâll rush back immediately.â
Upon hearing that she had to return, Jean also realized that it wasnât going to be something pleasant.
Before he could ask, Neera hung up the call. While pulling him in the opposite direction, she quickly explained the situation, âMr. Cox encountered an unexpected incident while taking over the Jagger family. He was hit by a stealth weapon and is now unconscious. Violet brought him back, saying that the weapon was poisoned. Mr. Cox is deeply poisoned now, barely clinging to life, and thereâs a high chance he might not make it. I need to rush back immediately to check on him.â
Jean was slightly taken aback. âIs it that serious?â
âYeah. Iâve never heard Violet sound so distressed before. The situation must be pretty serious. Luckily, weâre not too far away.â
The two of them walked briskly and finally arrived at the dock.
Once aboard the ferry, Neera didnât feel like sitting idly in the cabin. Instead, she stood on the deck, leaning against the railing, gazing at the shimmering sea surface reflecting the sunlight.
Jean brought her a cup of coffee, standing shoulder to shoulder with her.
âAre you worried?â he asked.
Neera hesitated for a moment before nodding. âYes. If Mr. Coxâs life wasnât in danger, Violet wouldnât be so eager to call me back. The Cox familyâs involvement in this mission is largely due to the Gordon family. If Mr. Cox were to lose his life, I would blame myself for the rest of my life.â
Jean stopped talking, silently gazing at the sea.
The surroundings suddenly became quiet again, but Neeraâs mind had trouble calming down.
She turned her head to look at Jean, wanting to speak.
She turned her head to look at Jean, wanting to speak.
Sensing her gaze, Jean pursed his lips and gently caressed her face.
âDonât worry. Everything will be fine. Youâve been really exhausted lately. I wanted to bring you here to relax and ease your mind, but it didnât work out. Once youâre done with the Gordon familyâs affairs, we should leave this place as soon as possible. I want you to return to a normal life.â
She didnât expect him to say such a thing. A whirlwind of emotions swirled inside of her.
âI thought you would be upset, or at least unhappy. You finally took me out and spent time with me, but we havenât even finished touring the island, and now we have to rush back to deal with all those troubles.â
A hint of helplessness filled Jeanâs eyes.
now âWhat can we do about it? You are now the head of the Gordon family. Your status has changed, and so have the responsibilities you bear. The Cox family is now inextricably linked with the Gordon family. I have no choice but to accept this. But I know that in your heart, itâs only me that matters. So, everything else is not important. Iâll say it again. I will continue to support you as I always have. Moreover, I am more than happy to be your backup. If you ever find it too hard to handle, come to me anytime. I am more than willing to help.â
Suddenly, Neeraâs heart was filled to the brim. The previous feeling of helplessness and uncertainty had vanished without a trace.
It seemed as though a force was continuously pouring into her heart, flowing through her blood, and spreading throughout her entire body.
She wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face in his chest. She took a deep, deep breath, savoring the unique, refreshing scent that was distinctly his.
âOnce all of this is over, when the Gordon family is no longer under anyoneâs control or threat, letâs leave this place. We can go sightseeing, relax, and then, weâll get married.â
Jean smiled faintly, holding her close, his heart filled with contentment. âAll right.â
Upon returning to District Fourteen, Neera chose not to go back to the Gordon residence but instead went directly- to the Cox residence.
Rio and Ronald were anxious. Seeing her was like seeing their savior.
âMs. Garcia, youâre finally here! Please, save Mr. Cox. Heâs on the brink of death!â
Even with mental preparation, when Neera stepped into Averyâs room and saw the man on the bed, she was still taken aback.
At this moment, Avery was no different from a dying man. His face was as pale as paper, devoid of any color. His breathing was shallow and sporadic, his state alarmingly critical.
Violet was by his bedside, staring at him blankly, constantly shaking his arm.
âSatan, wake up. I want some candy. Where have you hidden the sweets you bought for me? I canât find them without youâ¦â
No matter how much she called out, Avery didnât make a single move and merely lay there in silence.

Upon witnessing this scene, Neera felt a twinge of heartache, but predominantly, she was consumed by worry.
She quickly stepped forward and said to Irwin, âHelp him up. I need to check his wounds.â
Irwin quickly did as instructed.
When Neera saw the hardening wound on his back and shoulder, her pupils suddenly contracted sharply.
