The heart transplant situation turned out to be much more positive than Neera had anticipated.
The following day, George called to inform her that a matching heart had been found.
Upon hearing the news, Neera was filled with joy. âAre you telling the truth? Are you certain?â
George chuckled. âOf course Iâm sure. Otherwise, I wouldnât have contacted you so promptly.â
Neera lost her appetite and left the restaurant, dropping her fork. âCan I go and get it now?â
âI know youâre anxious, so Iâve already made arrangements. You donât need to come over. Iâll have someone deliver it to you. Just provide me with the hospital address.â
Neera expressed her gratitude repeatedly. âThatâs wonderful. I canât thank you enough, Mr. Meyer. If you ever need anything in the future, please donât hesitate to contact me. Iâll do my best to help as a way of expressing my gratitude.â
After hanging up the phone, she was filled with excitement and didnât even touch her meal. She grabbed the thermos that Zuniga had prepared and headed straight for the hospital.
She had spent the previous night researching information about heart transplant surgeries and had stayed up late.
Originally, she had planned to wait for Jean to return, but he ended up staying at the hospital.
When she arrived at the hospital, she coincidentally saw Jean coming out of Wrennâs ward.
âWhy didnât you sleep a bit longer? Didnât you go to bed quite late last night?â Jean furrowed his brows slightly upon seeing her.
He walked over to her in a few quick strides and playfully pinched her cheek.
Neera grunted in response, turning the tables to complain about him. âDonât you also stay up very late?
You canât keep pushing your body like this. You didnât come back last night. Were you afraid Iâd scold you for staying up late? Have you been busy all night again?â
Jean smiled resignedly. âYouâve seen right through me. The company has been busy these past few days, and Joseph canât handle everything on his own. I try to deal with some of the business matters whenever I can.â
Hearing that, Neera looked worried. âHow is the situation with the company?â
âDonât worry, everything is fine.â
âHave the shareholders caused any trouble? And what about the rumors outside-â
âDonât worry about the rumors, the shareholders are behaving themselves. You donât need to stress over the company matters. Now, letâs see, what delicious treats have you brought?â
He didnât want Neera to worry too much about him, so he changed the subject.
Seeing that he didnât want to discuss it further, she didnât ask any more questions. After giving him the thermos, she suddenly remembered the important matter. âOh yeah! Weâve found a matching heart!â
When Jean heard that, he narrowed his eyes and his speech unconsciously quickened, carrying a sense of urgency. âWhen did this happen?â
âJust this morning. Mr. Meyer said that he had already sent someone to the hospital. You eat first, Iâll go talk to the doctor. If there are no issues, weâll schedule the surgery within the next two days.â
âLetâs go together.â Jean couldnât eat anymore. Holding her hand, they both headed towards the doctorâs office.
After understanding the situation, the doctor was also quite excited. âIâll immediately arrange for compatibility testing. Once we confirm that there are no issues, weâll schedule the surgery right away.
Mr. Fredericâs health is deteriorating day by day. If we delay any longer, Iâm afraid he may not be suitable for surgery anymore.â
Neera nodded, glanced at the time, and estimated that it was almost time. So, she went to the hospital entrance to wait.
However, nearly an hour had passed, and the heart still hadnât arrived.
Neera couldnât wait any longer.
George had called her that morning. It was he who had sent someone to deliver the heart.
She dialed his number, but it didnât go through.
Unable to reach him, she began to feel uneasy and dialed another number.
This time, someone answered the phone.
However, it was an unexpected person. âNeera, you must have been waiting for a long time, havenât you?â
Upon hearing that voice, Neera narrowed her eyes, and her face darkened.
âNicole, why is it you?â She asked coldly.
Nicole sneered, âWhy canât it be me? Donât you want to hear my voice? Or are you saying you donât want the heart anymore?â
Upon hearing those words, Neera scowled.
She gritted her teeth tightly, immediately understanding Nicoleâs intentions. âSo, the heart is in your hands. What do you want?â
It seemed as if Nicole had just snapped her fingers, speaking triumphantly. âIt seems youâre quite smart. A wise person adapts to the situation. Neera, if you want the heart, youâll have to pay a price that satisfies me. Who knows, if Iâm pleased, I may just have the heart delivered to you immediately.â
Neera spoke in a deep voice. âDo you realize that this is a matter of life and death? You are a member of the World Medical Association and a medical practitioner. Yet, now you are joking about someoneâs life. Donât you think thatâs too much?â
Nicole scoffed dismissively. âWhat does someone elseâs life have to do with me?â
Then, she continued with a smug expression, âActually, if it were someone else, I wouldnât bother getting involved. However, since itâs about you, I have no choice but to step in. Neera, remember when I was greatly humiliated at the World Medical Alliance because of you? Itâs time for us to settle that score.â
Neeraâs eyes were cold and stern. âWhatever issues lie between us, however you wish to settle them, Iâm ready to see it through to the end. However, I must have the heart as soon as possible. Any other matters, we can deal with later.â
âDo you think Iâm a fool? To pass up such a golden opportunity, what leverage will I have over you in the future? Arenât you always so proud? Iâd like to see how you can maintain that pride now! Neera, if you want the heart, fine. However, I want you to kneel and apologize to me in front of everyone. Once Iâm satisfied, then Iâll give you the heart. What do you think?â
Neera grimaced silently.
Her lips were tightly sealed, and she remained silent.
Beside her, Jean observed her expression, sensing that something was wrong. He softly inquired, âWhatâs wrong?â
Neera shook her head, choosing not to respond. She spoke into the phone, âDo you find this amusing?â
âInteresting. Very interesting,â Nicole casually remarked, twirling a strand of her hair. âNeera, the conditions I proposed arenât too difficult to agree to, are they? I didnât ask you to die or sacrifice anything significant. All I asked was for you to publicly apologize and bow to me. Itâs such a small matter, and you canât even do it? Donât you want the heart anymore?â
