On the way to the airport, Jean would occasionally glance at Neera with a thoughtful smile.
Neera was puzzled. âWhy are you always smiling at me for no reason?â
Jeanâs gaze shifted downward, landing on the amulet hanging from her phone case. His slender fingers casually fiddled with it.
âI never realized before, but my mom is actually quite⦠interesting.â I Neera couldnât help but chuckle. âIt seems you still have a lot to learn about them.â
Jean didnât deny it. âIndeed. Most of my time was spent studying and growing rapidly. As soon as I started high school, I gradually began to get involved in the companyâs affairs. After starting college, I began to take over the companyâs business. I didnât have much time to spend with my family, or rather, I wasnât at home most of the time.â
He said it in a casual tone, as if it were a trivial matter.
Upon hearing this, a sudden pang of sorrow struck Neeraâs heart.
She understood all too well that his success and youthful achievements were the result of countless sacrifices.
âWhy the long face?â Jean pinched her soft cheek, smiling slightly.
âIâve already made it through, and I donât see it as a big deal. Fate has been kind to me, allowing me to meet you and be with you.â
Neera let him pinch her however he wanted. After he let go, she suddenly leaned in and hugged him.
âFrom now on, you wonât feel lonely anymore. Iâll be with you, along with our children, and your family.â
Jean laughed, wrapping his arms around her shoulders. âMmm, I understand.â
In the end, he lowered his gaze to stare at her soft hair and added thoughtfully, âMy family is your family. Theyâll always be by my side and yours too.â
Neera was momentarily stunned. She realized he was beating around the bush just to convey his message.
Pulling away from his embrace, she pouted. âDidnât you dislike beating around the bush before? How come youâve picked up this habit?â
Jean lowered his head with a soft smile. âI was afraid of upsetting you. However, I can see that youâve gradually accepted it, havenât you?â
He had never considered asking Neera to forgive his family, as he respected all her decisions.
The fact that they could get along like this now was truly beyond his expectations.
In truth, even Neera herself didnât expect her attitude toward Frederic and Wrenn would subtly change to what it was now.
Or rather, she didnât expect Jeanâs parents, especially Wrenn, to be so different from before.
Moreover, she could sense that Wrennâs actions were not pretentious but came from the heart.
Just as Wrenn said before, she truly treated her as if she were her own daughter.
Just as Wrenn said before, she truly treated her as if she were her own daughter.
Truth be told, although she maintained a calm facade, she was quite surprised and deeply moved inside.
Jean knew her too well. He could guess her thoughts from a smile, a frown, or even a calm and undisturbed gaze with high accuracy.
Now, he could understand what she was thinking and feeling in her heart.
âIn truth, my mother isnât a harsh person by nature. She does have a bit of a temper, proud and conscious of her social status, but sheâs still quite gentle. She wasnât always so unreasonable. Itâs just that when it comes to matters involving me, she becomes stubborn and strong-willed, which makes her seem sharp and bitter. Now, sheâs come to her senses, realizing that everything she did was completely wrong, and her old self has returned.â
At this point, he held her hand and lowered his eyes with a smile.
âIâm not making excuses for her, but I feel you must know this, otherwise you might find it strange.
Thatâs just how she is. When she truly cares for someone, she gives her all. And honestly, I feel that ever since she had her epiphany, it seems like she treasures you more than me.â
Neera raised her delicate eyebrows. âAre you depressed about it?â
Jean lightly brushed her nose. âNonsense, Iâm happy instead.â
The two of them chatted leisurely until they reached the airport.
As soon as they boarded the plane, the previously relaxed atmosphere gradually faded away in no time.
The minor incident from earlier had already faded from Neeraâs mind. Now, her heart was once again filled with worry for her aunt and uncle.
Her feelings of unease werenât lost upon Jean.
So, throughout the flight, he casually chatted with her, distracting her as much as possible.
Nevertheless, Neera couldnât rest until she saw her aunt and uncle.
Thankfully, the unsettling two-day journey finally came to an end.
As soon as the plane landed, the two headed straight for the Gordon residence.
Chad and Adriana had heard the news that the two were returning and had been waiting for her.
Upon seeing Neera, Adriana helped her to a seat, sympathetically stroking her hair.
âLook at you I told you not to come back, but you wouldnât listen. You insisted on making this trip, running around and exhausting yourself. Youâve even lost weight.â
After speaking, she asked Jean again. âIs your father recovering well?â
Jean nodded. âYes, heâs basically recovered. With a bit more rest, he should be completely healed.â
âThatâs good to know.â
