HUNTER “Lainey…What is it?” I scan her face. I almost feel scared. I don’t know what she has to tell me, but from the look on her face it’s serious.

“I think it’s better if I show you.” She says.

I give a nervous smile. “Lainey, you’re scaring me.”

She looks at me. “There’s nothing to be scared of. Trust me.”

My face falls and I nod.

The blue moon is now past its peak and still casting its deep blue glow around the trees.

The vampire war roared through the night as we sit in the trees. The desert air carried the strong scent of shifter and vampire blood.

I know we should rush out there and fight, but right now, I feel like this is just as important as the battle being fought a distance away.

She looks directly into my eyes. “I need you to really listen, ok. Listen hard.”

“Ok.” I tick my mouth up quick.

In a second, she flashes her fangs and sinks them into my shoulder.

I let out a huffed growl and cringe my face. It was painful at first, but then it was like a wave of calm washed over me. My eyes open wide as my arms wrap around her hard.

She not drinking, she doing something else.

My mind fills with pulsing red and I hear a heart beat. Lainey has a heart beat? What?

I listen to it. The rhythmic thumping was addictive. It’s beautiful. I could listen to it forever.

As I soak in the thumping of her amazing heart, something rises in the background.

‘Listen hard, Hunter.’ Lainey’s voice echoes in my head like she’s actually there.

My brows stitch together as I tilt my head. I feel like my mind is travelling through her body. Slowly exploring her insides as I'm drawn to the sound.

Lainey’s heartbeat fades into silence. I close my eyes and listen harder. My mind travels deeper. It’s searching.

A smile creeps on my face as I listen to the sound. It was angelic. So tiny. The most beautiful sound I could possibly hear other than Lainey voice.

She pulled her teeth out and looked at me.

“Really?” I hitch as I lean to her. I swallow and smile.

“Yes.” She chokes. She strokes my neck. She seems happy, but still nervous about how I will react.

I look down and place my hand on her stomach. I look back up into her eyes. I feel like a child myself who just discover something amazing. “We made that?” I whisper.

“Yes, we did.” She smiles. “And he’s beautiful.” She tilts her head to me as I gently wipe her tears.

“He?” I ask.

“Yes. His name is Adam.” She looks into my eyes.

“How?”

She taps her temple. “He’s part of the hive.”

I lean to her. “He can do that?”

She puts her forehead on mine. “And so much more.”

I look at her and look down at her stomach. I touch it again. My heart is racing. My self doubt fills me, but I feel like Adam wouldn’t have shown himself to me if he didn’t trust me.

“Say something.” She whispers.

My eyes flick to hers and I suck on a breath. “I love you so much. I love Adam so much. I love you both so fucking much.” I slam my lips on hers and wrap my arms around her. She cries as her arms wrap around my neck. The amount of love and happiness I’m pouring into this kiss, is exponential.

I turn around and Ash is standing on the path.

He scowls and walks away.

I run down the path, out of the forest and into the desert sand.

The deep blue light did nothing to hide his anger as he walked away from me.

The battle was pretty much done, with a few clean up crews chasing down some vamps.

Ash was stomping down the side of the forest.

I glare at him as I close the gap between us by a few feet.

My fists ball and I throw a finger at him. “YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT YOU FUCKING SAW! YOU DON’T KNOW THAT LAINEY AND I WILL END THE WORLD! YOU DON’T FUCKING KNOW!!”

“SHE’S A FUCKING VAMP, HUNTER!!” He steps closer. His anger rolling off him in waves.

I shake my head. “SHE’S NOT A VAMP! SHE'S LAINEY! SHE'S MINE! MY MATE!” I point to my mark. “IF YOU THINK THAT I...THAT I COULD END THE WORLD…THEN YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHO I AM! IF YOU’VE BEEN BLIND THIS LAST YEAR ABOUT LAINEY, THAT’S YOUR FUCKING PROBLEM. FATE GAVE HER TO ME! DO YOU THINK SHE WOULD REALLY DO THAT TO ME?”

My body shakes and my chin almost quivers as I look at my friend across from me.

“LAINEY AND I ARE MATES! IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT THEN TOO FUCKING BAD! BUT YOU KEEP YOUR FUCKING MOUTH OFF ME, LAINEY AND MY KID!” I fumed and my face was a thousand shades of red.

I heard Lainey come out of the woods.

He stood there with his hands on his hips. He looked out to the fading blue desert as the blue moons color starts fade.

“I have people in my corner, Ash, but I want you too. I hate that you think this. I swear to you, I swear on my sons life. This isn’t what you saw. It’s not what you think. I’m in love with a vampire. That’s all this is, Ash. That’s all this is.” I whisper my last sentence as I kick at the sand.

Ash’s eyes looked between us. “Kid?” He rolls his eye to me.

I wipe my nose, look around and chuckle. “Yeah. I just found out.”

“Mates.” He grumbles.

“Yes. My Luna, Ash. The only one made for me. She’s my life, Ash. Who I was born for. I…love her…I love them…They’re not evil, Ash. Please don’t think my boy is evil. Please. Cause he’s not.” My face pained as I shook my head. “I want you be here for me. Don’t think my family is evil. There’s too much of that already.”

He rubbed his neck. He walked up to me.

Chewing his cheek he looked to Lainey then back at me.

He grabbed my head and pulled me into a hug. His strong arms held me tight and I hugged him back as I fought my emotions.

Even though we really didn’t know each other, it hurt that he wasn’t in my corner. I had all the other Alphas, but for some reason, if I didn’t get Ash’s acceptance, I felt alone.

“Congrats man. I’m sorry.” He slapped my back and I slapped his.

I push him back and wiped my nose. “Lain.” I held out my arm. She walked under it and I dropped it around her neck. She wiped her eyes.

Ash grabbed her and hugged her. “I’m sorry. I’m a dick.” He hugged her tight.

“It’s OK. It’s not easy.” She whispers.

He pulls back. “So a mini you.” He smiles.

I nod. “Yep.”

“Does this mean he’s a triple threat?” He smirks and motions his finger between us.

“Uh…I guess so. Shifter/Lycan/Vamp? Look out world.” I grin at Lainey.

“Does he have a name?” Ash asks.

“Adam.” Lainey supplies.

He pulls on his beard. “Adam. I like it.” He nods.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t out here, man. Lainey was dying, the mate bond snapped…” I shake my head.

“It’s fine.” He scratches his head. “Gia got away, as well as a good chunk of her army, but I don’t think she’ll make another move anytime soon.”

He slings an arm my shoulder. “Come on. Let’s go celebrate that boy.” He hits my chest and I chuckle. I grab Lainey’s hand and we walked back to the transport trucks.

It’s a small victory, but if I can win Ash over, I’m sure the rest of society should be a cake walk.

Lainey is too special. I think people see that when they see her. Hear her speak. Will we be free from backlash? No, but if I help her become strong. If I teach Adam to be the best damn Alpha he can be, we all already have a great start.
