I pace my living room floor, my frustration mounting with each step. Itâs been a week now, and I still havenât received the money I earned at Purgatory. Iâve been checking my account multiple times a day ever since that horrible day, and despite all the pain Iâve just overcome, I still donât have anything to show for it.
Bills are still piling up, multiple overdue notices scattered across my coffee table. I grab my phone and try to reach Lucian again, only to be told that heâs in a meeting and is unavailable to talk. What the hell am I going to do now? I have no money, Tristan and Talon are nowhere to be found, and Iâm in no better position now than I was before I auctioned off my virginity.
Regret fills my gut as I flop down on my couch. Helplessness swirls in my chest as I stare at the yellow slips of paper that constantly taunt me about my fucked up financial situation. Now that my injuries are mostly just a painful memory, Iâm going to have to jump back into work and pull a shit ton of overtime just to cover the late fees for most of the things that are due.
And then I need to get in touch with Lucian to figure out where the hell my money is.
I try to pass time by cleaning my apartment a little, coming across the box that is now back on the top of my bookshelf. I swallow hard as I gaze at it for a moment, remembering the look on Talonâs face when we realized who I really was. I havenât seen or heard from him or Tristan since that night, and I donât know why I feel strange about that. I have no idea if heâs told Tristan or what he may think about me now that he knows that they fucked their ex-foster sister. Iâm sure itâs a lot for him to wrap his mind around; it was hard for me to accept it. He almost appearedâ¦hurt when he learned the news, but I canât pinpoint if itâs because I hid it from him or if he feels bad about everything theyâd done.
âMust not feel too bad if neither of them have come back to apologize,â I bitterly remind myself as I stuff a few pieces of old mail into the trash bag in my hand. Once Iâve gathered all the trash, I tie the bag up and prepare to take it down to the dumpster. I ignore all the shady individuals lingering around in the hallway, catcalling me as I walk past before shouting rude things to me when I donât respond to them. God, I hate this place. Being able to move into a safer, more habitable home is the main reason why I took the second deal.
Now I donât know if or when Iâll be able to make that happen.
I quickly make my way down the steps and toss the bag into the dumpster. I donât run into the landlord, thankfully. Iâm still late on rent. The last thing I want is for him to start bitching about how I havenât paid and then harass me about how he doesnât run a free shelter.
âHey! You! Number ten!â an annoyingly familiar voice calls after me once I step back onto my floor. I glance over my shoulder to see my landlord lumbering toward me with a frown on his face. Shit. Just the person I wanted to avoid.
I turn to quickly go to my apartment, but the landlord proves to be a little faster than I originally thought. He grabs my elbows and pulls me further away from my door and glares at me.
âI still havenât gotten rent from you,â he snaps. I wrinkle my nose at the smell of whiskey coming off his breath and through his pores. His sweat slicked skin and wild eyes tell me everything that I need to know, which means that I need to find a way to get away from him before things become dangerous for me.
âIâm waiting on my check from work,â I say, my voice a little shaky. âI swear, Iâll pay.â
âYou know, youâve been nothing but trouble lately,â he slurs, yanking me a little closer to him. âYou got two guys threatening to call the health inspector and get me shut down and shit. Who do you think you are to do that to me, huh?â
My mouth opens and closes as I struggle to form words. Why the hell would Tristan and Talon go out of their way to do all of that? Then it dawns on me. That mustâve been how they got the key to my place to begin with. They hadnât broken in, so someone either had to have let them in or they were able to get in with a key.
I shake my head. âI didnât have them say anything, I swear.â I try to pull out of his grasp, but his tight grip only hurts my biceps when I attempt to. âLook, Iâll have your money soon.â
He sweeps a hungry gaze along my form and licks his lips. âMaybe we can figure out another arrangement in order to settle your past due rent,â he says with a wicked grin. âYou look like you have a good mouth on ya.â I yelp when he cups my pussy through my shorts. âAnd I bet you have a tight little pussy on you, too. I think thatâs a fair trade, donât you think?â
Bile rises in my throat as fear and disgust settle in my chest.
âAnd if you touch her like that again, Iâll kill you,â a menacing voice says behind us. The landlord and I whip our gazes around to find Talon standing a few feet away with a deep scowl. He narrows his gaze on my landlord. âThat would be a fair trade, wouldnât it?â
The landlord lets go of me and releases a nervous laugh before dabbing at a bead of sweat on his forehead. âI was just messinâ.â He waves a dismissive hand. âI was just reminding my tenant that sheâs a bit behind on rent, thatâs all.â
Talon continues glaring at the landlord. âGet the fuck out of here before I decide to kill you anyway,â he states firmly. âIâm already not in a good mood.â
The large man scurries back down the unstable steps, leaving Talon and me alone. While Iâm glad that he showed up and stopped a potentially bad situation, itâs strange to see him standing before me when heâs been a ghost for the last week.
âWhat are you doing here?â I ask after a long stretch of silence.
âThatâs the first thing you say?â He frowns at me. âNot a thank you for saving your ass just now?â
I fold my arms across my chest. âI couldâve held my own.â
âSure you could.â He scoffs and moves closer to me, leaning against the wall next to my apartment door. He watches me expectantly, like heâs waiting for me to unlock the door to let him in, but he still hasnât told me why heâs here.
âUmâ¦hello? Your reason for being here?â I ask.
He gives me a one-shoulder shrug. âHonestly? I donât even know.â He sighs deeply and presses his back against the wall, pulling his gaze from me. âI feel so many different things when it comes to you that itâs frustrating me.â
His words make my heart flutter a little as I try to decipher what he means. âLike what?â
He stares down at the ratty, thin carpet that lines the floor. âI donât think thatâs a conversation to have in a hallway.â
I unlock the door and allow him to come inside. He slips his hands into the pockets of his jeans and steps inside, watching me as I close and lock the door. I turn to face him.
âOkay. Like what?â I repeat.
He walks over to the couch, but he doesnât sit down. He frowns at me again, his face changing in a way that almost makes me nervous. âIâm sure you know that Iâm pissed about you not telling us who you were the moment you realized who we were.â He blows out a tense breath and runs a frustrated hand through his hand. âBut itâs not even just about that. Aside from you withholding information from us, Tristan and I never got over the way you left us, as if we meant nothing after Mom died. You abandoned us, and then you waltz back into our lives and lie about who you areâ¦for what?â
Guilt unfolds in my chest when I think about the day I left their house. On the one hand, I want to tell them what happened, but itâs something I know neither of them is ready to know. Itâs something I donât even like to think about when I think about those times. Instead, I glance at Talon and shake my head.
âI had my reasons, and itâs not anything thatâs important right now with everything weâre already dealing with,â I state. Annoyance flickers over his face, but he doesnât say anything. Besides, even if I tell them, I doubt theyâll even believe me. âAnd considering Tristan hasnât bombarded his way in here, Iâm assuming you havenât told him yet.â The muscle in his jaw ticks, which is enough answer for me. âI thought so.â
âLetâs not get away from the main point about you hiding who you are,â he says, his voice stern. âThat was really fucked up, Cleo. We couldâveâ¦we couldâve seriously hurt you.â
âThat wasnât on me. I donât know why my name was so important to begin with. You were only supposed to take my virginity and be on your way.â
âThat wouldâve been the case had you not reacted the way you did,â he reminds me. While I want to argue, I know that heâs right.
âWell, Iâm sorry, but I had my reasons.â I wrap my arms around myself. âI didnât want you guys to find out. I hadnât seen you two in so longâ¦it wouldâve been awkward to have a family reunion while you were taking my virginity.â
He stares at me so long that I shuffle my weight from foot to foot as I grow nervous. A multitude of different things pass over his face before he visibly relaxes in front of me.
âEven though I canât forgive you and have been mad as hell at you for this last stunt, I canât help but to be drawn to you.â He holds my gaze and the sincerity in it nearly takes my breath away. âI missed you, Cleo.â
Every wall that Iâve tried to keep up comes tumbling down and tears burn my eyes as a result.
âIâ¦I missed you, too, Talon,â I murmur. âAnd Iâm sorry things happened that way. I justâ ââ
He cuts off the rest of my sentence by pressing his lips to mine, slipping his tongue into my mouth with such passion that my lungs nearly collapse. I allow myself to melt against him, relishing, and the way his hands move down my body. Our clothes disappear into a pile at our feet, and he effortlessly picks me up and carries me back to my couch without much protest from me.
After my first experience with sex, I actually thought I would be too afraid to attempt it again. But for some reason, I trust Talon enough to know that he wonât hurt me.
As if he was reading my mind, his mouth opens with gentle words. âIâm so sorry about what happened in hell, let me show you how amazing sex can feel. Let me make you feel good.â
I nod my head slightly before I force myself to relax as he kisses down my body. I try not to think about everything that happened to me in Hell. But before any bad memories have a chance to form, pleasure blooms through the pit of my gut when Talon takes my clit into his mouth.
âOh my god.â I gasp, immediately threading my fingers through his soft hair. My hips roll of their own volition in an effort to chase the pleasure coursing through my bloodstream. Every swipe of his tongue seems to melt away all the pain that I buried in my memories from last week.
âSo sweet for me, Kitten,â he murmurs into my wet flesh, the vibrations of his words sending chills up my spine. I moan in response, and my back arches when he slips two fingers inside of me. A part of my brain knows this is wrong, but he also feels so perfectly right. Being with Talon feels perfectly right.
And as he continues to lick and suck between my legs, I simply let go and enjoy them for what it is.
