Chapter 36
The air seemed to have froze and my heart began to race.
It was as if I still looked forward to get an explanation from him.
After a moment of silence, Ryan asked in a cold voice, âDo you really want a divorce that badly?â
The mixture of feelings in my heart caused me to find it difficult to breathe. I raised my head and looked at the blinding lights in the living room and blinked. I was on the edge of having a mental breakdown, but I still said ruthlessly, âYes, that badly.â
I wanted to cut ties with him at least before my belly began to show.
There was no way that I was going to gamble with a child in my womb.
Behind me, the man remained silent. The sound of the door closing was his response.
It felt as though all strength had been drained from me as I slowly slid down the shoe cabinet, staring blankly at the ceiling.
In an instant, my heart felt empty and began to ache.
That night, my pregnancy hadnât been able to affect my sleep at all. I lay in bed and couldnât fall asleep at all.
The autumnâs evening breeze blew all night, as though it were pouring into my body, chilling me to the bone.
Perhaps, I could accept that he didnât love me, and I could even accept that he married me under Grandpaâs arrangements.
But it was just too hard to accept that the three years of marriage I had longed for was merely a sacrifice he made out of necessity for someone else.
I had once been filled with joy, thinking I had plucked a star from the sky, but how wrong I had been.
The next day, I had just woken up when I received a call from Jane, asking how my foot was and if I needed to take a day off.
I got out of bed and tried to walk. That was when I realized that my ankle wasnât aching that much
anymore.
It hadnât fully recovered, but it didnât hinder my walking that much anymore.
Jane said that she would come to pick me up in 20 minutes.
She didnât give me a chance to refuse.
When I finished getting ready and went downstairs, her ivoryâcolored Paramela was conveniently parked at the entrance.
Jane rolled down the window, casting a doubtful glance at my foot. âAre you sure youâre alright?â
âIâm fine. Jack bought some medicine for me yesterday. It was quite effective

Jane cocked her brows, started the car, and clicked her tongue. âImagine if you had liked Jack back then. How happy would you be now?â
âYouâre acting like if I liked him, he would like me back. I chuckled helplessly.
âYou never know.â
Suddenly, Jane thought of something profound and said meaningfully, âWhat if back then, the person who took you to the school infirmary and brought you meals was actually Jack? Would you have fallen for him like you did for Ryan?â
I laughed. âThere are no âifsâ in life.â
âBut what if it really was him?â Jane insisted. âTell me, would you?â
After hearing her words, I glanced at the busy crowd outside the car window shook my head. âI donât know.â
Falling in love or liking someone would mostly be dependent on the moment.
thought for a moment, and
If it had been Jack, who took me to the hospital and greeted me when I woke up, with the sunlight shining on him.
Perhaps, I might really have fallen for him.
But there were no âifsâ. Ryan was the person I saw and from that moment onwards, I only loved him.
Jane sighed. âFate can play tricks on people.â
âLetâs not talk about me anymore. How are you and Tom doing?â
âFrom a oneânight standâ¦â Jane said teasingly, then burst into laughter, which made her look stunningly beautiful. âTo friends with benefits.â
