Just at this momentâ¦
Knock, knock, knockâ¦
Urgent knocks on the door broke the tender moment between them.
âMiss Downey, Lillianâs awake â how are we going to fix this? The police have arrived.â
Hayden suddenly came to his senses, shoved Joseph away and sat up quickly.
Knock, knock, knockâ¦
âMiss Downey, are you there?â Jeff sounded hesitant as he knocked on the door.
Hayden took a deep breath and forced himself to say, âIâm here. I didnât hear you earlier. Iâm busy with something and Iâll be there in five minutes, go ahead.â
âWhatâs wrong, do you need help?â.
Hayden was surprised to hear that and quickly replied, âNo, I⦠Iâm changing. My clothes were dirty after saving her just now.â
Hayden let out a sigh of relief after managing to convince Jeff to leave. She turned around and saw Joseph looking at her in embarrassment as he said, âYouâre pretty good at lying.â
Hayden immediately blushed and glared at him, âAll because of you.â
âActually your lie wasnât well thought out.â Joseph folded his arms and sneered, âA lot of people saw me bring you here. Donât you think your assistant would expect me to be here?â
Haydenâs expression changed immediately upon hearing this and she was speechless for a moment. Hadnât she just shot herself in the foot?
âDid you already know this was going to happen?â Hayden gritted his teeth and said, âYou did it on purpose.â
âYes, I did.â Joseph said calmly, âAn eye for an eye.â
Hayden frowned and asked, âWhy, did I offend you?â
Joseph looked deeply at her and reminded her, âHave you forgotten what we agreed to in GX City?â.
Hayden came back to herself and her face began to burn, âI wasâ¦â.
She simply couldnât find the words and so she said. âSo thatâs why you held a grudge against me until today. You kept making things difficult for me and today you did it intentionally in front of so many peopleâ¦â
Joseph reacted and said, âWhat do you mean, I made things difficult for you because of that matter?â
âThen what else could it be?â. Hayden was now upset and said quietly, âYou picked on me during the meeting in front of so many people. You were getting even for your own private reasons.â
âWhat did you say?â
âNothing.â Hayden avoided her eyes and stepped aside.
Joseph looked at her and then at the large bouquet of roses as his cheerful mood dissipated and he said coldly, âThe scent of the flowers is too strong. Next time donât put them in the office, itâs in bad taste.â
He said it as if he was repulsed by the flowers, which made Hayden frown and ask, âTasteless? Then why did you send me these flowers?â.
Joseph was stunned and shocked.
âIâm an ordinary person who likes ordinary flowers, yes?â. Hayden rolled his eyes, stood up and demanded, âIâll go out first. Wait until thereâs no one outside before you leave.â
She was still flushed, but forced a calm expression as she left. As for Joseph, he still looked frightened.
When she left, Joseph walked over to the vase of roses and saw the card underneath. He smiled as he saw the words written on the card. At last he knew the truth.
So the old man had been up to his old tricks again.
In the staff rest area, Lillian had just regained consciousness. Her pale face showed how weak she was. A colleague standing near her was comforting her.
âLillian.â Hayden pushed the onlookers away, walked over to the head of the bed and said softly, âHow are you, are you still feeling bad?â
Lillian did her best to shake her head as her tears continued to fall on the sheet.
âI will look into this matter. You must never have suicidal thoughts again. Imagine how sad your grandmother would be when she found out.â Haydenâs heart ached as he clutched his cold hands.
Lillian was a receptionist he had hired a month ago. Although she left school before finishing high school and had no skills, she was very conscientious in her work. She was a poor girl who left town to work just to support her sick grandmother. This information was ascertained by Hayden personally.
As for the alleged theft by Lillian, at the moment there was no hard evidence of it. Hayden also did not believe that Lillian would do such a thing, while comforting Lillian, a commotion started outside.
âWhatâs going on?â Hayden frowned and asked.
âItâs Madison.â Hearing that, onlookers began to murmur among themselves.
Hearing the name âMadisonâ, Hayden could clearly feel Lillian gripping his hand tightly and seemed to be very scared.
âDonât worry, Iâll get to the bottom of this.â Hayden patted Lillianâs hand and got up to leave. âCan everyone please leave so Lillian can get some rest?â
âRest?â Just as the door closed, an ominous voice was heard, âIf everyone who stole something can use suicide as a tactic to seek sympathy, then everyone who was imprisoned for murder should come to the tower to attempt suicide.â
Hayden looked over and saw Madison folding her arms and staring at her. She was full of disdain. She was wearing olive green shorts with a black t-shirt. She was petite and had a charming look about her.
She had just launched her career and was in the middle. Privately, she had a very bad temper and by the time they were checking into the hotel, she had already had several run-ins with the lead actress, Violet, due to the casting of the film.
âMiss Lopez, we are not covering up this matter. It is inappropriate to pass judgment before the matter is fully investigated.â
âFrom last night until today, she was the only one who entered my room. The security cameras also proved that I did not wrongfully accuse her.â Madison frowned and said disdainfully, âFrom the looks of it, youâre covering this up for her. A moment ago you risked your own life to save her â why, is she your relative?â
Hearing this, Hayden secretly rolled her eyes, but outwardly she still looked calm and said, âThis matter?â
âThis matter is very simple and needs no investigation. I wonât go crazy necklace, but I hate those who steal. So I have only one request: fire her and I will let the matter be resolved. If not, Iâll make sure the hotel is responsible.â Madison interrupted Hayden and raised her chin arrogantly.
âAfter all, this thief is your subordinate. If I were to insist on this matter, youâll have to pack up and leave too.â
Hayden clenched his fists as he held on.
âThe person who needs to pack up and leave is you, Miss Lopez!â. A cold, haughty manâs voice sounded from the hallway and everyone looked in that direction.
