Chapter 187

Chelsea felt dizzy after receiving the slap, and only after a long time did she regain consciousness. When she raised her head, the right side of her face was imprinted with bright red fingerprints.

Trembling, she covered her face and looked at Hayden in disbelief. “You dare to slap my face?”

“This slap I gave you on behalf of Dad, who is still in the O.R. waiting to be revived. What did you just say? When Dad wakes up, get down on your knees and tell him word for word.”

Chelsea’s heart pounded for a moment and she pursed her lips.

She had just said badly that her father was going to die, something she still remembered.

However, she didn’t expect Hayden to keep harping on that point.

“This is a hospital and there’s an operating room here. If you want to cry and make a fuss, get lost and go wherever you want, don’t make a fool of yourselves here. If you want to stay here, shut up.”

Hayden’s voice wasn’t very loud, but it sounded unquestionable.

Chelsea looked disgruntled and wanted to let go of Sofia’s hand to argue with Hayden, while Alayna said something under her breath.

“What’s the matter, does Miss Downey think that the slap a moment ago didn’t bring her back to consciousness? Before the security guards come, I think the police won’t say anything if I do something to uphold the law so as not to affect the surgery.”

“You…”

“Chelsea.”

Sofia quickly moved Chelsea to her back. Although she was very angry, she forced herself to apologize to her, “Chelsea just said the wrong thing as she was too nervous. Of course we want Bentley to wake up. We won’t argue anymore, let’s wait next door.”

This was a crucial moment that would determine her and Chelsea’s future. How were they going to be kicked out of the hospital? Even if they were humiliated, she had to stay here with her daughter.

Hayden looked at them coldly. She didn’t have time to ask any more questions and sat back down.

On the other side, the doctors and nurses from the hospital also dispersed the crowd, making the place silent again, only the steady sound of the clock signaling the time left for the operation remained, slowing people’s heart rate.

“Mom, what’s wrong with you? The bitch just scolded us like that…”.

“No matter how much she says, she won’t get a penny more.” Sofia lowered her voice, showing a tinge of melancholy in her eyes, “As long as your father never wakes up, you and I are the legal heirs to most of his estate. What she can get at most are those houses, but not the company.”

“Mom, how can you be so sure Dad won’t wake up, what if he…?”

“There is no ‘what if’…”. Sofia’s lips curved and she smiled coldly, “Even if he escapes by the skin of his teeth today, he won’t live long.”

Chelsea shuddered, sensing that she had gone too far to turn back. She said hesitantly, “After all, he’s my father. Mom, do you really want to do this?”

“You treat him like your father, but he only cares about his little girl. I’m doing this now for our future. Don’t worry, Chelsea. Nothing will go wrong, just get through these two days.”

“…I know, Mom.”

The operation went on for over six hours, and when the operating time on the wall stopped counting, Hayden clenched his fists, not realizing that his fingernails were tearing blood from his hands.

“Doctor, how’s my father?”

“The operation went well, and the patient is doing well for now, but he needs to be transferred to the ICU for further observation.”

Hayden exhaled a sigh of relief as Alayna quickly lifted her up.

Once all the hospitalization formalities were completed, Sofia and Chelsea stood at the ICU door and refused to leave, looking as if they loved Bentley very much.

Hayden lingered for a while at the ICU entrance. From the glass partition door, he could see that Bentley had many tubes inserted into his body and his heart broke. She wiped away her tears and went directly to find the doctor attending Bentley.

“Mr. Bentley is suffering from severely impaired liver function, which is common in older people. It is due to an unhealthy diet and lifestyle, and this is something I told him last time. This sudden fainting is a warning. Miss Downey…I can only tell you frankly that you may need to psych yourself up.”

“Isn’t there anything that can be done?”.

“Now you can only rely on medication to maintain your health, but it is almost impossible for you to recover. You also know that once the organ is damaged, it is almost irreversible.”

“I see, thank you, doctor.”

Even though she had already prepared for the worst, she was still at a loss and felt anxious when she heard the doctor say these things.

“By the way.” The doctor called out to her suddenly, “There is something in the lab report that has puzzled me. There is an intake of trace elements in Mr. Downey’s blood that is clearly abnormal. Does he take regular health supplements?”

“What’s wrong?” Hayden stood still, a little puzzled, “Is there something wrong with taking health supplements? There are plenty of health supplements at home.”

She wasn’t quite sure about that, but Bentley was older and not in very good health. So, a lot of people coming to her for help had given her tons of health supplements, so she should more or less be eating some.

“Other than the medicine prescribed by the hospital, he shouldn’t eat anything else. Take note of what he eats. You’d better explain it clearly to his caregiver as well. I will make a list and give him specific things he can eat. When Mr. Downey wakes up, he should ask the doctor first if he wants to eat anything.”

“Okay, I understand.”

As Hayden left the room, Alayna walked toward her and asked, “How did it go?”

Hayden shook her head. She looked depressed.

Alayna hesitated for a few seconds and said, “Joseph just arrived.”

At her words, Hayden froze for a moment, staring at the packing box in Alayna’s hand without saying anything.

“He came with the packing box, and I was embarrassed to refuse him, but I said you were in a bad mood, so I asked him to leave.”

“Hmm.”

Hayden frowned. She didn’t want to see Joseph at all right now.

“But Chelsea went after him.”

At Alayna’s sentence, she lifted her head and her expression changed slightly. “Why did she go after him?”

“I don’t know.” Alayna shook her head and said tentatively, “Why don’t you go after them and take a look?”

Hayden took two quick steps and suddenly remembered something. Then he slowed his steps.

“What’s wrong?”

“Never mind, let her do what she wants, it’s not important.” After saying that, Hayden turned around and walked towards the ICU.

Alayna sighed helplessly, then loaded up a pile of food and chased after her.

At a cafeteria near the hospital….

“A cup of cappuccino, please.”

Chelsea glanced at the menu and looked Joseph up and down. “What are you drinking?”

“Water.”

His attitude was cold and that terse response of ‘water’ actually showed that he didn’t want to talk to her too much.

After giving the order to the waiter, Chelsea lifted the corner of her lips, revealing a smile that looked decent to him.

“Did I hear that Mr. Beckham broke up with my sister? It’s normal for a couple to break up, not to mention my sister has been spoiled from a young age and has always had a bad temper, so it’s hard for anyone to get along with her, so I guess it’s not his fault they ended their relationship.”

“Is it, is that what you brought me here for?”.

“Of course it’s more than that, although I’m not quite clear on why they broke up, there’s something I feel I should remind you of, lest you feel you’ve been cheated and it implicates the rest of the Downey Family.”

Chelsea looked at Joseph, “Do you know why my sister went overseas six years ago?”
