Chelsea felt dizzy after receiving the slap, and only after a long time did she regain consciousness. When she raised her head, the right side of her face was imprinted with bright red fingerprints.
Trembling, she covered her face and looked at Hayden in disbelief. âYou dare to slap my face?â
âThis slap I gave you on behalf of Dad, who is still in the O.R. waiting to be revived. What did you just say? When Dad wakes up, get down on your knees and tell him word for word.â
Chelseaâs heart pounded for a moment and she pursed her lips.
She had just said badly that her father was going to die, something she still remembered.
However, she didnât expect Hayden to keep harping on that point.
âThis is a hospital and thereâs an operating room here. If you want to cry and make a fuss, get lost and go wherever you want, donât make a fool of yourselves here. If you want to stay here, shut up.â
Haydenâs voice wasnât very loud, but it sounded unquestionable.
Chelsea looked disgruntled and wanted to let go of Sofiaâs hand to argue with Hayden, while Alayna said something under her breath.
âWhatâs the matter, does Miss Downey think that the slap a moment ago didnât bring her back to consciousness? Before the security guards come, I think the police wonât say anything if I do something to uphold the law so as not to affect the surgery.â
âYouâ¦â
âChelsea.â
Sofia quickly moved Chelsea to her back. Although she was very angry, she forced herself to apologize to her, âChelsea just said the wrong thing as she was too nervous. Of course we want Bentley to wake up. We wonât argue anymore, letâs wait next door.â
This was a crucial moment that would determine her and Chelseaâs future. How were they going to be kicked out of the hospital? Even if they were humiliated, she had to stay here with her daughter.
Hayden looked at them coldly. She didnât have time to ask any more questions and sat back down.
On the other side, the doctors and nurses from the hospital also dispersed the crowd, making the place silent again, only the steady sound of the clock signaling the time left for the operation remained, slowing peopleâs heart rate.
âMom, whatâs wrong with you? The bitch just scolded us like thatâ¦â.
âNo matter how much she says, she wonât get a penny more.â Sofia lowered her voice, showing a tinge of melancholy in her eyes, âAs long as your father never wakes up, you and I are the legal heirs to most of his estate. What she can get at most are those houses, but not the company.â
âMom, how can you be so sure Dad wonât wake up, what if heâ¦?â
âThere is no âwhat ifââ¦â. Sofiaâs lips curved and she smiled coldly, âEven if he escapes by the skin of his teeth today, he wonât live long.â
Chelsea shuddered, sensing that she had gone too far to turn back. She said hesitantly, âAfter all, heâs my father. Mom, do you really want to do this?â
âYou treat him like your father, but he only cares about his little girl. Iâm doing this now for our future. Donât worry, Chelsea. Nothing will go wrong, just get through these two days.â
ââ¦I know, Mom.â
The operation went on for over six hours, and when the operating time on the wall stopped counting, Hayden clenched his fists, not realizing that his fingernails were tearing blood from his hands.
âDoctor, howâs my father?â
âThe operation went well, and the patient is doing well for now, but he needs to be transferred to the ICU for further observation.â
Hayden exhaled a sigh of relief as Alayna quickly lifted her up.
Once all the hospitalization formalities were completed, Sofia and Chelsea stood at the ICU door and refused to leave, looking as if they loved Bentley very much.
Hayden lingered for a while at the ICU entrance. From the glass partition door, he could see that Bentley had many tubes inserted into his body and his heart broke. She wiped away her tears and went directly to find the doctor attending Bentley.
âMr. Bentley is suffering from severely impaired liver function, which is common in older people. It is due to an unhealthy diet and lifestyle, and this is something I told him last time. This sudden fainting is a warning. Miss Downeyâ¦I can only tell you frankly that you may need to psych yourself up.â
âIsnât there anything that can be done?â.
âNow you can only rely on medication to maintain your health, but it is almost impossible for you to recover. You also know that once the organ is damaged, it is almost irreversible.â
âI see, thank you, doctor.â
Even though she had already prepared for the worst, she was still at a loss and felt anxious when she heard the doctor say these things.
âBy the way.â The doctor called out to her suddenly, âThere is something in the lab report that has puzzled me. There is an intake of trace elements in Mr. Downeyâs blood that is clearly abnormal. Does he take regular health supplements?â
âWhatâs wrong?â Hayden stood still, a little puzzled, âIs there something wrong with taking health supplements? There are plenty of health supplements at home.â
She wasnât quite sure about that, but Bentley was older and not in very good health. So, a lot of people coming to her for help had given her tons of health supplements, so she should more or less be eating some.
âOther than the medicine prescribed by the hospital, he shouldnât eat anything else. Take note of what he eats. Youâd better explain it clearly to his caregiver as well. I will make a list and give him specific things he can eat. When Mr. Downey wakes up, he should ask the doctor first if he wants to eat anything.â
âOkay, I understand.â
As Hayden left the room, Alayna walked toward her and asked, âHow did it go?â
Hayden shook her head. She looked depressed.
Alayna hesitated for a few seconds and said, âJoseph just arrived.â
At her words, Hayden froze for a moment, staring at the packing box in Alaynaâs hand without saying anything.
âHe came with the packing box, and I was embarrassed to refuse him, but I said you were in a bad mood, so I asked him to leave.â
âHmm.â
Hayden frowned. She didnât want to see Joseph at all right now.
âBut Chelsea went after him.â
At Alaynaâs sentence, she lifted her head and her expression changed slightly. âWhy did she go after him?â
âI donât know.â Alayna shook her head and said tentatively, âWhy donât you go after them and take a look?â
Hayden took two quick steps and suddenly remembered something. Then he slowed his steps.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âNever mind, let her do what she wants, itâs not important.â After saying that, Hayden turned around and walked towards the ICU.
Alayna sighed helplessly, then loaded up a pile of food and chased after her.
At a cafeteria near the hospitalâ¦.
âA cup of cappuccino, please.â
Chelsea glanced at the menu and looked Joseph up and down. âWhat are you drinking?â
âWater.â
His attitude was cold and that terse response of âwaterâ actually showed that he didnât want to talk to her too much.
After giving the order to the waiter, Chelsea lifted the corner of her lips, revealing a smile that looked decent to him.
âDid I hear that Mr. Beckham broke up with my sister? Itâs normal for a couple to break up, not to mention my sister has been spoiled from a young age and has always had a bad temper, so itâs hard for anyone to get along with her, so I guess itâs not his fault they ended their relationship.â
âIs it, is that what you brought me here for?â.
âOf course itâs more than that, although Iâm not quite clear on why they broke up, thereâs something I feel I should remind you of, lest you feel youâve been cheated and it implicates the rest of the Downey Family.â
Chelsea looked at Joseph, âDo you know why my sister went overseas six years ago?â
