Kevin got nervous because Joseph had read his mind, âCanât I? Alayna will be fine.â
âYouâre wrong.â Joseph said firmly, âYour parents will surely investigate the person you want to marry. If they find out that you had kept so much of Alaynaâs medical history from them, they will surely disapprove of you being together.â
Joseph had known Kevinâs parents since he was a child. They allowed Kevin to do everything as if he were already an adult, but they couldnât stand any deception or lying. It wasnât hard to imagine that they would detest such a girl after learning that Kevin had kept such an affair from them.
âYou can do that if you want to risk Alayna being detested by your parents for the rest of her life.â Josephâs words had cut off Kevinâs plan.
Kevinâs eyebrows drew together in a deep frown.
âActually, itâs not that big of a deal. Iâm not afraid that my parents wonât accept Alayna. Iâm just afraid that Alayna will be upset if I take it upon myself to announce our relationship when sheâs still delusional. In fact, we are supposedly still separated.â
Kevin took Alayna home only because she was delusional at the time.
Up to that point, Joseph had no reason to continue. He patted her on the shoulder, âIâm done talking. Otherwise, Hayden will talk to you.â
âOkay.â
Kevin nodded.
Hayden was Alaynaâs best friend, besides sharing secrets. Hayden was also the only one Alayna told about her condition personally. Now that Hayden was here, naturally, she had a few words for him.
After a while, Hayden left the room.
Joseph was also sensible and got up, âIâll go to the parking lot and look for the car.â
After saying that, he shot a glance at Hayden and left.
âHave a seat.â
âNo need.â Hayden said weakly, âIt seems you havenât assimilated Josephâs words.â
âI have assimilated.â Kevin explained, âTheyâre good words to me. But in thinking about it, he didnât even take Alayna into account. After all, he didnât put himself in my shoes.â
âI am, however, in Alaynaâs shoes.â Hayden had a sharp eye, âThe words Iâm about to say may be unpleasant for you.â
âGo ahead. Iâm prepared for it, Iâve been prepared for all of this since the day I found out about Alaynaâs medical history.â
âYouâve prepared yourself that one day you wonât be able to take it anymore and youâll have no choice but to leave her?â Hayden spoke seriously, without any sense of joking or irony, âIf one day you no longer love her, or you were tired of your life and can no longer afford hers as well, what are you going to do?â
Kevin clenched his fists, âWait.â
After saying this, he walked over to the reading area in the corner, yanked open the door to the lower level bookshelf and pulled out an aluminum safe.
âThis is proof of all my real estate holdings. I have a total of thirty-six properties in my name, the most valuable of them in City P. Three of the six properties in City N are stores that I rent out. The rest are distributed mainly in the tourist and resort area throughout the country. This is the proof of my cars and stock certificatesâ¦â.
âWhy are you showing me this?â.
Hayden was confused, listening to him inform her of his assets. She couldnât help but interrupt him after listening to him for a while and realized that there was still half of the stuff left in the safe that he hadnât taken out yet.
Kevin stopped pulling out those documents, raised his head and said solemnly, âIf itâs really like what you said, someday I wonât be able to afford his life anymore, Iâve considered it too. But for now, I donât think the reasons are that I donât love her or that I canât stand it anymore. Iâve even thought about what would happen if some disaster happened and she lost her life.â
Hayden was speechless.
âThese are all tangible assets in my name. I had my lawyer draw up a contract that will transfer all these assets of mine to Alayna in the event of any of the situations you just mentioned.â
âWhat about her inability to use them?â Hayden had a complex feeling as he said this.
âThen there will be a three-way bond between the trust facility, the welfare organization and the mental institution, supervising each other to care for Alayna for the rest of her life.â
After hearing from Kevin about his arrangements, Hayden had to believe that Kevin had actually done his homework to care for Alayna. Maybe he was doing it on a whim, but this fervor of his didnât overwhelm his sanity. It was even too sensible.
He even took into account the case about a trust and the charity that teamed up to defraud his estate. He asked that Alayna live at least into her eighties, with her organs and body tissues at the average level of other people of the same age. Only then would the remaining money be donated to the charity.
Hayden was speechless.
As he left Kevinâs house, sobs came from inside the room. Kevin seemed to be used to it, âI canât stay with you anymore, she must be crying, watching the movie. I need to comfort her.â
âGo ahead.â
Hayden believed that the care Alayna received at Kevinâs house was better than anywhere else. But he was vaguely concerned that that care would turn Kevinâs life upside down.
After getting into the car, Joseph kept his mouth shut on the subject of Kevinâs house and instead asked about other things, âDo you want to go over to Harrisonâs to check on Stella?â
After learning what had happened to Alayna, Joseph had sent someone to take Stella to Harrisonâs.
Hayden wasnât in the mood and sighed, âNo need. Stella is going to be asking me where Alayna went, I havenât thought of how to answer her.â
âThen letâs not meet with her for now. I heard from the butler that Stella is having fun over there. School is about to start and she needs someone to drive her there and back, she said she doesnât mind whether you go or not.â
âWho said that? When the company is running smoothly, I can still go get her.â
Hayden disagreed with him for calling her a freeloader and ungrateful.
âMagnus will keep an eye on the companyâs remodeling. As for the designerâ¦â Joseph looked at Hayden as if weighing his words, âBesides Dante, you still need to put together a team of designers. Iâve let Magnus post a recruitment on behalf of Green Lemon Clothing, do you mind?â.
Hayden slowly came to himself, âThe head designer position leave it reserved.â
âOkay.â
In a moonlit dusk, N City was still buzzing with neon lights lining the streets.
How far could a person go for love?
What Alayna feared most was being abandoned. Her self-esteem would not allow such things, and so she hid her illness. But in the end, she was still with Kevin.
Hayden leaned back in his seat, staring at Joseph in the driverâs seat for a long moment. âJoseph, I have something to confess to you.â
