âYour name is Sophie, right?â.
âYes.â The girl nodded her head seriously.
âThank you, Sophie, for pushing me this far.â
Hayden smiled as she held the wheelchair and then stood in front of the girlâs parents. They were shocked when they saw her get up so suddenly.
âBecause you are kind and willing to help, I can now stand up.â
The little girlâs eyes widened in disbelief, âMaâam your leg is better.â
âSo, as a thank you gift, Iâll give you the chocolate, yes?â.
Saying this, Hayden handed the girl the box of chocolates he had taken, touched her head and said, âThank you for helping me! In the future, when you see others need help, you should also be brave like today, OK?â.
The girl took the chocolates and nodded solemnly. She stared at Haydenâs legs for quite a while before reluctantly leaving with her parents.
When the family left, Hayden sat back down in his wheelchair.
âYouâre good at cajoling kids.â The sound of sarcastic laughter came from upstairs.
Hayden rolled his eyes, âItâs all because you made me wheel out. Sheâs such a little girl, itâs not right to discourage her from helping others.â
âYouâre right.â
Joseph grabbed a box of chocolates. âBut this is a supermarket, you took something, shoved it in someoneâs hand and said it was a gift, is that appropriate?â.
Hayden came to and immediately tried to get up.
How awkward. The couple didnât look particularly wealthy, and this brand of chocolate wasnât cheap at all. A box with a few pieces of chocolate would cost a few hundred dollars.
Before she could get up, a strong hand squeezed her shoulder and pushed her back into the wheelchair.
âItâs okay, Iâve already informed the manager. All the snacks the girl buys will be free.â
Hayden let out a sigh of relief and couldnât help but ask again, âWhen did you inform them?â
âJust when you were getting excited about showing off your magic legs.â
Hearing this, Haydenâs face instantly flushed.
He said it on purpose!
He immediately explained with a red face, âYou donât understand, you have to talk to kids like that. No wonder you and Noah have a bad relationship, did you understand now?â.
âI donât understand.â Joseph smiled nonchalantly, âI just need to know how to cook fried cod tonight and thatâs enough.â
The ladies in the supermarket were much more enthusiastic than those in the neighborhood. They all saw Haydenâs legs and gave him a lot of food to try.
The most embarrassing thing was that Hayden was going to get his period soon, he purposely kept his distance from the shelves selling towels to watch Joseph make a fool of himself. She let him go shopping alone.
âDonât buy the wrong one. If you donât know what to buy, ask the woman by the racks.â
âOkay.â
Joseph headed toward the shelves, pushing his little cart. He looked calm.
After a while, Hayden saw that Joseph was shopping with a large amount of towels showing on the shelf, it was as if he was trying to buy them all.
He was confident that he was rich so he could do whatever he wanted. Hayden wasnât going to let him get what he wanted.
Hayden was quick to call the woman in the towel area and said, âLook, thatâs my boyfriend. I asked him to help me buy some towels, but he doesnât know how to choose very well. Can he help me? Tell him to take two packs for the day and two for the night. I have to bother him because my legs donât give me much.â
The woman agreed instantly: âOkay, Iâm coming. Donât move, rest here.â
âOkay, thanks.â
Hayden held up the thermos he had brought from home and took a contented sip of water and prepared to watch the show.
Sure enough, as soon as the woman got there, Joseph stood still as a statue. The expression on his face was also very rigid.
Hayden struggled to hold back the urge to spit out the water, took out his phone and sneaked a picture.
After taking the picture, Hayden realized that the two were talking happily. The woman pointed toward her and then pointed toward the baby products area.
What are they doing? Why are they talking about babies now? Hayden thought.
Five minutes later, Joseph returned with a full cart.
Even though the woman had helped him, he bought a lot of stuff. The amount was enough for half a year.
Hayden, a little curious, raised her head and asked, âWhat did you just tell her? Itâs fine for you to point to me, but why did you point to the baby products area? Did she ask you to buy powdered milk?â
âNo.â Joseph inexpressively pushed the cart and wheelchair, âHe asked me to buy diapers.â
âBuy diapers for what?â.
âFor you.â The two simple words made Hayden cringe, as if her dignity and ego were trampled.
Hayden froze for a few seconds. Expressions of shame and embarrassment completely took over her face.
All because of this wheelchair. She swore she would never go out with it again.
This situation made her feel as if she had gone for wool and came home shorn.
As soon as the âdiaper incidentâ broke out, Hayden flat out refused to continue shopping in a wheelchair. Since they were almost done with things, the two went straight home.
On the way back. Hayden forcibly took off Josephâs coat and covered his head. He said it was to protect himself from the others. It made him feel like he was making an unnecessary move.
Luckily, it was almost dinner time. There werenât many people walking around the neighborhood. Every home smelled of cooking smoke.
In the open kitchen of the apartment, there was the sound of fish cleaning and frying in the oil.
âFry it until both sides are golden brown. You can also add water and put in some ginger, tofu or stew.â
Hayden craned his neck from outside the kitchen and gave her instructions in a loud voice.
In fact, the sound of the kitchen exhaust fan was too loud, she herself couldnât be sure how many things Joseph actually heard, nor if he was following the recipe or following her instructions. In any case, the steps were almost the same.
She was too idle as she recovered from her injuries.
It was nothing more than a burn, but they treated her as if she were paralyzed. She herself began to feel embarrassed.
The phone rang and she looked down to see the caller ID. It was a call from States U. She hesitated a moment and hopped on one leg into the room to take the call.
âHello? Edison.â
Joseph finished cooking and realized that Hayden had disappeared. He vaguely saw a figure pacing back and forth across the room, he frowned immediately.
It wasnât good for the recovery of his wounds if she was walking around like this.
As soon as she went to the door of the room to remind her, she heard Haydenâs voice from inside.
âWhen are you coming?â.
ââ¦â.
âNot this week. I got a little injured, Iâm afraid I canât come get you, or welcome you.â
ââ¦â.
âOkay, next week then.â
ââ¦â
âItâs okay, I wonât tell Stella so you can surprise her, okay?â.
From the half-open door, he could clearly see the natural and friendly smile on her face, it was like talking to a close friend who has known each other for many years, or having a closer relationship.
After hanging up the phone, Hayden put it down and stayed in the room for a while. Then, she heard Joseph in the living room, calling her to lunch. She hurried to answer, âIâm coming.â
âYou went to take a call?â Joseph asked offhandedly.
âYes.â
âFrom whom?â
âFrom a friend.â Hayden replied nonchalantly. His chopsticks poked one of the chicken wings and he smiled, âIt looks really good.â
âWhat friend?â Joseph sounded a little crestfallen.
