“No!” Amapola fidgeted and stammered, “I got scared and tripped, Miss Downey had nothing to do with this.”

Joseph looked angrily at Amapola.

“I remember I told you that you would not meet with Noah unless Hayden agreed, what happened?”.

Joseph hadn’t expected Amapola to attend this party. He didn’t know the reason for her presence, but he figured Harrison might have known something, especially from what Harrison told Hayden.

“Old Mr. Beckham invited me.” Poppy explained at once, “I didn’t come because I wanted to, it was an arrangement of his, he told me I could see Noah from afar.”

“You’ll never see Noah again.”

He thought, being a surrogate mother might have impacted her life. And it was reasonable for her to want to get to know Noah, but it seemed she wasn’t as trustworthy as she acted. After leaving the bathroom, he went back to the dining room and said to Magnus, “Go back and check Amapola’s identity and background.”

“Why, is there a problem?”

“Go and check them.” Joseph went cold and glared at Magnus, “You’ve been very talkative lately. Why does Harrison know about Amapola?”

Hearing this, Magnus flinched and replied uneasily, “Mr. Beckham, I…”

“That’s enough. Check his identity now, I want the result by tomorrow.”

“All right.” Magnus didn’t dare speak and walked away quickly relieved.

Joseph had never doubted Magnus’ ability because he had been his assistant for years and had never screwed up. So when he brought Joseph the DNA test result along with other evidence and said that Poppy was Noah’s mother, Joseph believed him straight away.

But Hayden was still upset about it, so she never contacted Amapola again. His memories of the past had faded and he found it difficult to be sure that Amapola was the girl from six years ago.

However, he became suspicious of her identity after seeing what happened in the bathroom.

Haydon wouldn’t hit anyone for no reason, which he never doubted, so Amapola was definitely lying. Although she acted well, she gave away her game.

After the party, Joseph took the kids and Harrison home.

The babysitter took the kids to bed, so it was just Harrison and Joseph in the living room.

“Why did Hayden leave the party?” Harrison asked aloud, sipping his tea.

Joseph replied coolly, “He wasn’t feeling well, so I asked him to go home to rest.”

“It was about Noah’s mother, wasn’t it?” Harrison wasn’t buying it and asked bluntly, “Hayden took it too seriously, Noah’s mother just wanted to meet her son. He was going to Britain, wasn’t he? And I heard she was a child psychiatrist. Maybe she could help Noah, he’s more introverted than most kids his age.”

Joseph frowned, “I’ll consider it later, you should stop interfering.”

“You think I’m interfering?”.

“I’m not going to let Poppy meet Noah.” Speaking of her, Joseph’s eyes went cold.

Harrison glared at him, “Her husband has advanced gastric cancer and is hospitalized, all she wants is to meet Noah. What’s more, it’s a mistake you’ve made before – now you don’t want to offer her help?”

“None of your business.” Joseph was firm with Harrison and didn’t want to explain further, “It’s late, I have to go. Good night.”

“Joseph…” Harrison’s face turned purple with anger as he watched Joseph walk away without looking back.

“Mr. Beckham, calm down.” Mark sighed beside him, “I think it was inappropriate for you to invite Miss Poppy and it was unlikely that Miss Downey wouldn’t be uneasy about it.”

“But Amapola is Noah’s biological mother. She was the one who gestated him and gave birth to him.”

“But do you want Noah to go back to his mother or stay with Miss Downey?”

“He should stay with Hayden, of course. She’s marrying Joseph, I’m not going to interfere with that.”

“That’s enough.” Mark became serious, “One would expect Miss Downey to treat Noah as her own son, but a mother is not willing to share her child with another woman.”

Harrison went blank for a moment after hearing him, “But Noah’s mother…”

“She should let Joseph handle this on his own, he’s a grown man and can handle this. We shouldn’t interfere.”

Harrison nodded thoughtfully, but immediately glared at Mark with a glare, “You implied that and upset him?”

Mark’s expression suddenly changed, “Indeed and it’s my fault I didn’t remind him sooner.”

Then Harrison’s serious expression softened.

Tonight, high-pitched screams were heard from inside a cottage up on the hillside.

In the house then echoed the sound of a slap.

“What are you thinking of? I have already warned you that you must not try to deceive Joseph and that you must confine yourself to doing as I have told you. What have you done, why did you tell him that Hayden Downey slapped you?”

Poppy covered her face with her hand, her teeth digging into her lip.

“Violet, I was trying to get back at you. Joseph trusted me deeply and didn’t say anything to me. He just asked me a few questions.”

“Do you think he’s an asshole?”

Violet was outraged and wanted to slap Amapola again. “Now he sent someone to re-investigate the evidence he has, do you even understand that you’re going to be found out if there’s a mistake?”

Amapola’s face gradually paled and she understood then how serious the crisis was. “Violet, what should I do now?”.

“What can you do?” Violet slammed her hand on the table and said angrily, “Pack up your things now and go back to your hometown, don’t even think of coming here for the next three years. The Beckham Family is hugely influential in N City, and it’s too late for you to run away if they find out anything. Don’t get me into any more trouble.”

Poppy lowered her head. She was dumbfounded and sobbed softly, “I know. Violet, I won’t get you in trouble. But I don’t want to go back, I finally got out thanks to my efforts.”

“Serves you right!” Violet glared at her, “You have to suffer the consequences!”.

Looking at Violet, Amapola knew there was nothing she could do now. She began to feel hopeless, but it was too late for regrets.

Violet was still exasperated with her, “Get out! I resent the sight of you.”

Violet planned this prudently to get Joseph away from Hayden. But she hadn’t counted on being spoiled by Poppy’s stupid self-assertion.
