In the morning, at dawn, Hayden went to Scarlettâs house with fruit and flowers. Nathan had to go to P-Town to work, so he left for the night. When Hayden went, there was only Scarlett at home pruning flowers in the living room.
âMiss Downey is here.â The maid opened the door and ushered Hayden in, âYou are a very polite person. Whenever she comes, she always brings a lot of things.â
Before Hayden could say anything, Scarlettâs voice came from inside the parlor. âYou always bring me fruits and flowers, am I a sick person?â.
Hearing that, Hayden went to her and said hurriedly, âDonât say that!â.
Scarlett looked her in the face, âEven though you didnât finish your studies and went to U.S.A., you have studied medicine, why do you still believe in superstitions?â.
Hayden smiled and took a seat on the couch, âI prefer to believe it. I also hope you have health and a long life.â
âGood thing youâre not killing me.â From the moment he walked in the door, Scarlett didnât smile at him. She even cut the good flowers accidentally. Hayden looked at the pieces on the ground and po a few seconds he felt sorry for them.
âAre you still mad about what happened last night?â. Hayden simply stood by the little table and watched as his aunt cut the flowers, âItâs not worth it for her to be angry. Itâs bad for your health.â
âItâs really not worth it?â Scarlett frowned, âIt was the first time we all met the Beckham Family and they still embarrassed you. Now Iâm afraid theyâll bully you after you marry Joseph. Your second uncle and their families were rude and embarrassed us.â
Hayden was touched, listening to her she knew Scarlett cared about her. She took her auntâs arm and leaned intimately on her shoulder. âThere are many people who respect you, you will never lose face. No matter what theyâve seen, Joseph and Grandpa donât care what happened last night. Not to mention they also know I have nothing to do with them.â
âDo you think theyâll want to stay away from you?â He started to get angry, âEven when they didnât treat you in the past, they still wanted you to help them. They are such scoundrels.â
âI wouldnât have helped them anyway.â
Scarlett raised her eyebrows, âAnd you shouldnât, theyâre shameless. If your grandfather hadnât adopted him, heâd be working in the fields right now.â
Scarlett was still the same woman she remembered from her childhood. She could still scold people without a hint of pity. As a child, she was afraid to listen to her, but now it felt warm to hear her.
âAuntie, donât worry, itâs all over now.â Hayden smiled.
Scarlett looked down and looked back at Hayden, âGirl, Iâve found you to be very optimistic. I donât need to worry about you.â
âThatâs not quite true.â Hayden shook his auntâs arm and said, âI still want you to help me with the wedding. If you donât help me, I wonât be able to do it right.â
Scarlett lost her temper, âYouâre ready to get married, but youâre looking more and more like a child.â Although he was complaining, but he still worried about her.
Happy women were like children in that they had nothing to worry about. âI really wish Joseph didnât have a child, I donât want you to be a stepmother. You canât be mad at the child and if you treat him right, people will think youâre trying to make Joseph happy, plus if he suffers anything, theyâll blame you too.â
Hearing that, Hayden became serious and said, âI want to tell you something and I hope you wonât be scared.â
âWhat is it about?â
âItâs about Noah.â Hayden pursed his lips, âI want to tell you his identity.â
Lanxi City.
It was already dark. Benjamin helped the waitress clear away the tables and chairs. The number of tourists visiting the ancient city during the winter vacations was increasing. There were a lot of people.
âBenjamin, does the landlady still have a cold?â. The waitress cleared the table while conversing with Benjamin. She was a little worried, âI havenât seen her out for several days. Even if she has a cold, she canât always stay in the room.â
Benjamin frowned and looked in the direction of the second floor. He could see the closed wooden door. It was the motherâs room. âItâs too cold, sheâs afraid sheâll get sick if she goes out. Iâll bring her food later.â
âOkay.â The waitress nodded and asked, âWhy are you two back together? Last time I asked you, you said you were busy and could only come back on New Yearâs Eveâ¦â.
Benjamin said indifferently. âIâm not busy anymore.â
âThenâ¦â.
âLily, why are you asking so many questions?â. Benjamin was impatient. He snatched the rag out of her hand, âYou can go to the service desk and clean up. Iâll finish up here, youâre too noisy.â
âLike I want to talk to you.â
The waitress didnât get angry, but merely sighed. She rolled her eyes and went to the front desk.
âNo wonder the landlady was always worried that you wouldnât find a girlfriend. You have such a bad temper that no one will want to be with you.â
Benjamin was in no mood to argue with her. Since they had returned from N-Town a week ago, his mother had stayed in the room and wouldnât come out. The waitress brought her food every day, but she hardly ate. He noticed she was thinner when he saw her this afternoon.
The sky was getting darker. Today was the ancient city festival. Most of the guests were out on the lake to put up lotus lanterns.
Suddenly, the inn was silent. Lily was dozing when she suddenly heard the wind chime ringing on the door curtain.
âIs this the Maple Sugar Inn?â
A male voice sounded and Lily suddenly awoke, âYes. Would you like to check in?â
âYes.â
âDid you make a reservation?â The man, black hat and camera in hand, shook his head, âNo, I came in a hurry, are there any rooms free?â.
âWait a moment, Iâll check.â Lily checked on the computer and, when she looked up again, smiled again, âFortunately, there is an empty room. But itâs almost New Yearâs Eve and the cleaning workers have left, I havenât had time to clean it yet. Can it wait a while?â.
The man nodded, âOkay.â
