Josephâs voice was calm and devoid of emotion, which amazed Hayden.
Hayden then said, âJoseph, I know what you mean, but she is your mother and Benjamin is also our friendâ¦â.
âNo, please donât talk anymore.â Before Hayden finished speaking, Joseph interrupted her.
His voice was still indifferent, as if he really didnât care about this matter.
âI wonât help you, for twenty years she hasnât been a member of the Beckham Family. Iâm not going to help her because her problems have nothing to do with me. You should go back now.â
Joseph said this firmly. He had made up his mind.
âI consider Benjamin my brother. You should help him.â
âI just know that your only brother is Freddie.â
âYouâ¦â Hayden was helpless. She didnât know what to say, and all the while, she was irritated, âFine, Iâll help him. I can get twenty million dollars somewhere else, itâs none of your business anymore.â
Then she hung up the phone.
When she turned and looked at the inn, she felt angrier.
Sheâd always thought Joseph wasnât as uncaring as he seemed. Even though her mother had made mistakes, they were in the past. Rebekah is his mother, she believed he didnât really hate her, so why was he refusing to help her?
The more she thought about this, the angrier she became.
âHello? Dante, please check how much money we have now.â
ââ¦â.
Hayden continually made phone calls. She got all the money she could get, but it was still far less than twenty million. After all, she couldnât immediately sell those properties.
Hayden sat on the second floor and worried.
In the early afternoon, the sound of an engine appeared outside the inn. A car from N City pulled up there.
Magnus arrived there.
âMiss Downey, Mr. Beckham asked me to look for you. It is dangerous for you to drive alone at night.â
However, no matter how hard Magnus tried to persuade Hayden, Hayden just sat there without speaking.
âMiss Downey, itâs my job. I canât go back if you donât come with me.â
Hayden looked at Magnus and said with annoyance, âThen donât come back. There are plenty of rooms at this inn, but you must pay for them. No credit is allowed tonight.â
âUhâ¦â. Magnus felt helpless, âThe decision Mr. Beckham made is also for your own good, please come back with me. I know you are often a bit cautious, but if you come back with me, this time you wonât say anything.â
âCautious?â Hayden was taken aback, âWhat do you mean?â
Magnus hesitated for a second and then said carefully.
âHe says heâs lost contact with his mother for twenty years, he thinks itâs too much of a coincidence that Benjamin was kidnapped after he met him. Mr. Beckham has money, and twenty million is not a big figure, but they canât swindle Beckham in such a disgusting way.â
Hayden was furious to hear this. He pounded the desk and stood up.
âConscience? Swindle? Ha! You think Benjamin is trying to cheat him by being kidnapped? Benjamin is a student at the University of Public Safety! He has a promising future, he wouldnât cheat Joseph like that.â
Magnus didnât dare say anything. He just ducked his head and listened as Hayden scolded him.
His boss said that Miss Downey would come back to him as long as he did as he said, but the bossâs plan seemed futile. It seemed that Miss Downey would not come back after hearing that.
Just as he was muttering, however, he heard Hayden say, âIâm going back to ask her.â
Magnus instantly lifted his head and was dumbfounded. The boss was truly intriguing. His plan had worked.
âThe car is over there at the gate, Iâll drive, do you have luggage? Let me carry it.â
âNo, I donât haveâ¦â.
As Hayden said this, he suddenly found a shadow on the second floor. When he turned around and checked there was nothing there.
Hayden became nervous, because Rebekah must have overheard her conversation with Magnus.
In Rebekahâs room, Rebekah was sitting by the desk and staring at the album on it.
Maybe she had gotten herself into trouble just because she was remembering the past. Maybe she shouldnât have taken those pictures.
There was a knock at the door. It was clearly heard in the quiet room. âItâs me.â
âCome in.â Rebekah hurriedly wiped away her tears.
Hayden opened the door and entered with soft steps, as if afraid of scaring Rebekah. After entering, he asked her cautiously, âAre you crying?â
âNo.â Rebekah flashed a strained smile, âAre my eyes puffy? Maybe itâs because Iâve cried too many times these days.â
âYou heard me talk to Magnus, didnât you?â
Hayden asked hesitantly. He knew the answer when he saw Rebekahâs face pale.
Hayden explained, âDonât misunderstand, Joseph said that because he wants to provoke me and force me to come back. He doesnât really think that way.â
âI know.â said Rebekah calmly, âI know he hates me, his fatherâs death was my fault, Iâm to blame for thatâ¦.. Benjamin is my son, so itâs my business to get him back. Iâm not willing to ask Joseph for help, even if he wants to help.â
Hayden frowned, then asked, âWho did Benjamin offend, why canât we call the police?â
At that, Rebekah remained silent. She seemed reluctant to explain.
âIf we canât get that much money, we have to call the police.â Hayden frowned and continued, âBesides, Benjamin is an elite student at the University of Public Safety, so the police will pay a lot of attention to him. I donât think itâs a good idea for us to stay here waiting for the money, calling the police is obviously a better way.â
âNo.â Rebekah looked panicked. She even grabbed Haydenâs sleeve, âWe canât call the police.â
âWhy?â Hayden was confused, âThere must be a reason, but why? Benjamin might die because of this.â
Rebekah was hesitant and tired, as if held back by the past. Sweat beaded on her forehead âNothing is more important than Benjaminâs life! Itâs Benjamin, your son!â
When Hayden said this. Then he found the hesitation in Rebekahâs eyes turn to sadness, then to tears.
âMrs. Beckhamâ¦â Hayden now didnât know what to do.
âSit here.â Rebekah choked back sobs, and asked Hayden to sit down, âI know what you mean. I know I have no choice but to call the police. Butâ¦but whoever took Benjamin is a ruthless man. He will kill Benjamin if he finds anything.â
âWho is he?â Hayden asked her. She knew he must be part of her past.
âTed.â Rebekah uttered this name through gritted teeth, âHeâs the demon thatâs been haunting me for thirty years. He should also take responsibility for the death of Josephâs father.â
Hayden was stunned to hear this.
