VIENNE
But I didnât sleep well that night. And it was all a certain irritating princeâs fault.
Why had he needed to be so nice and understanding? And why had he ~wanted~ to stay bound to me? Honestly. His behavior had helped absolutely nothing.
He shouldâve felt betrayed because Iâd asked his sister to have him keep his distance after heâd saved my life. He shouldâve been hurt that I hadnât thanked him in person before tonight for all heâd done. He shouldâve been livid that my entire family had treated him like dirt and then beaten him for his actions. He shouldâve wanted freedom from me.
Yet his first thought was that I not be scared of him, and his last words were meant to reassure me that no matter how awful I treated him, heâd continue to be faithful and devoted.
What man ~did~ that?
Itâd done nothing but make me like him and start to feel all soft and tender toward him, which caused the entire situation to grow even more complicated.
Because as soon as I checked on Anniston and then lay down myself, visions of our conversation in the hall kept haunting me. And then when I finally did fall into a deep slumber, he took over my dreams.
This time, I was sitting alone at the wedding reception after the maid had taken Anniston away, and he suddenly appeared before me.
Without saying a word, he held out a hand as my favorite song began to play.
I blinked at him before asking, âHow did you know?â
He merely smiled. âThat this was your favorite song? The mark told me.â
Reaching forward even more, he took my fingers and drew me from my seat. Then he led me out onto the dance floor where everyone paused to watch us together. Yasmin stopped chatting with her ladies-in-waiting, and Soren turned from his discussion with the council members. Neither of them seemed upset to find me in the arms of the man they both had warned me away from. They simply watched as Prince Urban swung me around, capturing all my attention.
He was an agile, graceful dancer. When he dipped me into a low swoon, grinning all the while, I merely shook my head and laughed. We didnât speak; there didnât seem to be a need for words, and as the song drew to a close, his eyes fixated with intent upon my lips. Feeling the need for a kiss, I rose up to meet him just as he leaned in.
But of course Annistonâs cry woke me before our lips touched.
I grumbled as I crawled out of bed to get to her, except Iâm not sure if I was upset because Iâd had another one of those disturbing dreams about him or because my child had woken me before the best part of it.
It didnât matter. Iâd figure out a way to stop the dreams, because they were pure ridiculousness. Just as Iâd figure out how to sever Prince Urbanâs bond to me.
âThe marks donât even tell a person what their one true loveâs favorites are, anyway,â I muttered aloud. The prince had told me as much last night. So, yeah⦠The dream had been pure ridiculousness.
I continued to hum the tune of the song under my breath, however.
What? It was a good song.
Since my bed rest was finally over, I took Anniston for a walk from the room as soon as I fed and changed her. We both needed some new scenery. Besides, it was the perfect time to meet the rising sunâitâd been too long since Iâd been to the East Salon.
âYouâre in for a treat, darling,â I promised her as we neared the door to the room. âIâm about to show you the best view in the entire kingdom.â
The child didnât answer. Yawning, she snuggled her cheek against my chest as if still hungry. I laughed. She was going to be a hard one to impress, I feared.
I swung through the doorway, still smiling, but then slowed to a stop when I realized the room was already occupied.
âO-oh,â I stuttered, already backing toward the exit. âIâm so sorry. I didnât mean to interrupt. Iâll go.â
But Allera was already rising to her feet. âNo,â she insisted. âThis is your home. I can go.â
She looked worried about upsetting me. With a sigh, I stopped and simply stared at her before reminding her, âItâs your home now, too.â
âYes, but youâreââ
âRanked lower than you now, I believe,â I finished for her with a small smile. âSince your husband is next in line to the throne and mine is after him.â
Her sigh was sad. âSo we canât just share the room?â
After drawing in a breath, I nodded. âActually, Iâd quite enjoy that.â
âTruly?â Allera perked to attention. âYou would?â
I nodded and started toward the empty seat next to her. âI miss talking to you.â
Her relief was palpable. âI do too. Oh, Vienne, I feel terrible for any deceptionââ
Lifting a hand, I shook my head. âItâs all in the past. I understand why you did what you did. And no one else was harmed. They probably wouldâve exiled him if theyâd learned about it sooner, which would not have turned out well for me, I fear, since I probably wouldâve remained dead after childbirth if he hadnât been around to resurrect me. So I must conclude that your silence at the beginning did nothing but save my life.â
âI still wish I hadnât hurt you,â she said softly as I sat, only for her to lean forward. âSay, is that the baby youâre carrying?â
âIt is!â With a smile, I held her up. âDo you want to snuggle with her?â
âOf course.â She immediately reached out, so I placed Anniston in her arms. âAww. Sheâs still as cute as ever. Hello, precious little girl. Arenât you just a gem?â
I smiled as I watched the two together. Then I had the presence of mind to say, âSo⦠Youâre Lady Donnelly now. How does it feel? The wedding was lovely, by the way.â
Allera looked up, her face brightening with either excited embarrassment or dreadful embarrassment; I wasnât sure which. âThank you. It ~was~ beautiful, wasnât it?â she murmured, before laughing and glancing away as if self-conscious, which made me think her blush came from the good kind of embarrassment. âAnd it feels wonderful, which is strange. Iâm much happier than I thought Iâd be. Brentleyâs just soâ¦â She shook her head as if at a loss for words.
I smiled, understanding completely. âHe is. Heâs a good man.â
âYes, but I didnât think Iâd actually become this ~fond~ of him. Jazon was my one true love, and being with ~him~ was more than I could even describe, so I couldnât even imagine being remotely happy with another. But Brentley⦠Heâs a pleasure. A true pleasure. And, oh dear Lord, I sound like a right lunatic, donât I?â
I shook my head. âNo⦠No, of course not,â I insisted. âYou sound surprised by how happy you are, which would be natural afterâ¦well, after losing your first husband, I should think.â
But she kept frowning. âThen why are you looking at me as if Iâd just grown three heads?â
âIâm sorry.â I waved my hands and blushed. âIgnore me. Itâs justâ¦never mind.â
âWell, now thereâs no chance of ignoring you. ~Tell me~.â
I laughed shakily at her persistence even as a strange knot of apprehension formed in my stomach. âItâs just that name you said. Jazon.â
Allera nodded slowly, the color leaching from her cheeks. âYes. He was my first husband.â
âYour one true love,â I murmured softly.
Allera gave another nod and glanced away. âYes. He was from Lowden. He barely escaped there after the Graykeys massacred his family for joining the revolt against them. I met him when I was helping tend to the refugees flooding into High Cliff at that time. After we were married, he enlisted with our army under Urbanâs command. And⦠and he died fighting to grant his people freedom.â
âIâ¦â Cutting myself short, I glanced away, not wanting to say anything and worried talking about it with her would only bring her more pain. With a frown, I shook my head, because what I ~wanted~ to say sounded too crazy to say aloud, anyway.
Allera politely lifted her eyebrows. âYou were saying?â
I shook my head some more. âNo. Iâm sorry. I donât want to cause anyââ
She waved a hand. âNo, please. Donât worry about that. You have me too curious now. Tell me what you were going to say.â
âItâs just⦠Iâm not sure how to explain it.â I laughed at myself and looked down at my hands. âItâs just⦠Iâd never heard the name Jazon before untilâ¦â I shook my head some more, realizing how crazy I was going to sound if I spoke this aloud.
âUntil when?â Allera pressed curiously.
I sighed and admitted, âWell, lately, Iâve been having the oddest dreams.â
A look of amusement crossed her features. âIs that so? Since you gave birth to Anniston, perhaps?â
I thought about it a moment before nodding. âYes. That sounds exactly right, actually. Is it a new mother affliction, you think?â
Allera laughed. âNo, Iâm sorry. But, no, I think itâs more of an ~Urban~ affliction?â
That name caused me to jolt. I blinked rapidly before shaking my head in confusion. âI donât understand.â
âIâd say it happened when he kissed you. The magic in his eye mark, it kind of joined your life forces together when he brought you back from the dead. Not that either of you will die now when the other one does or anything like that, but youâll share things from here on out, like dreams.â
I shifted uncomfortably in my chair. âI donât⦠I mean, are you sure? What else do we share?â
âOh, Iâm sure most of itâs quite one-sided, since heâs the one with the mark and youâre not, which makes me wonder how youâre able to share the dreams at all, but oh well. I never understood everything about the mark. I just know heâll always know when youâre close, and it could probably point him in the right direction to find you again if you were far away. And heâll be able to sense when you experience extreme emotion, like the height of fear or love, things like that. Then there are the dreams. Whichever one of you falls asleep first rules the dreaming for that episode, and the second person gets sucked into the first personâs vision once they join the sleep world. I imagine you must be up and down with Anniston so much at night that Urbanâs probably leading your dreams more often than not.â
Dazed by so much information, I just stared at Allera, not sure I wanted to know how tied to her brother I really was.
She leaned toward me and gripped my forearm. âDoes this mean you saw Jazon in one of Urbanâs dreams?â Happy tears bloomed in her eyes and a smile spread. âWhat was he doing? Fishing in that godawful loch behind the castle again? I swear, thatâs all he and Urban ever did together.â
âNo, he wasâ¦â When I realized what I was going to say, I immediately shut up.
Allera frowned. âWhatâs wrong? What was he doing?â
I shook my head. âI donât⦠Iâm sorry. I shouldnât have started this. You donât want to hear this.â
âNo, please.â She nearly lost her hold on Anniston so she could grip my arm again to waylay me when I went to stand. âI do want to hear. What? What did you see?â
I sank slowly into my chair and sent her a sad glance. âHe was dying,â I whispered. Then I shook my head. âHeâs always dying, the same way. In every dream.â
Allera let go of me and pulled back, tucking my child closer to her. Then she shook her head. âBut thatâs not⦠I mean, I didnât realize Urban was ~there~ when Jazon died.â
I gulped, hoping I hadnât said too much. âTheyâre just dreams,â I started, helpfully. âIt doesnât mean any of them really happened.â
âBut the same thing happens every time?â
Since Iâd already admitted as much, I nodded. âYes.â
âTheyâre probably memories then. Tell me. Please. How did he die?â When I opened my mouth to protest, she cut in. âIn Urbanâs dreams, then? How does he die in Urbanâs dreams?â
âThere was a war,â I said softly. âThere was fighting all around at the edge of an open field where a forest started. HeâJazonâwas sitting upright and leaning back against the trunk of a tree, his chest torn open, and blood mixing with the tattered chain mail that hung off his shoulders.â
Allera gasped and covered her mouth with a hand as her eyes filled with tears. âThey did say he died from a chest wound,â she choked out. âI felt it when it happened. Pain exploded through my own chest. And then⦠Then it was gone. ~He~ was gone. By the time they brought him to me, it was too late. I couldnât bring him back. Iâd been too far away when it happened. Too much time had passed.â
âIâm sorry,â I said. âIâll stop now. I didnât mean toââ
âNo! Please donât stop. I have to know.â
I took a shuddered breath before nodding my agreement. âI knelt by him, repeating his name, first in horror, then sorrow, and finally in disbelief. Then I told him he was a stupid fool, and I demanded to know why heâd done it. ~I~ was supposed to be the one to make that scouting trip. Not him. Why had he stolen my post? The dying man merely coughed up blood before grinning up at me. âLet my bothersome little brother go on a suicide mission?â he said. âI think not. ~Iâm~ the hero of this story, mate.ââ
Allera laughed and then sobbed before more tears rushed to her eyes. âThat sounds like him. That sounds exactly like Jazon.â
I nodded and closed my eyes. âSo I asked him what I was supposed to tell his wife, and he just smiled. âShe already knows everything I want her to know,â he answered.â
âI did,â Allera whispered. âI did know.â
âBut I couldnât accept that.â Shaking my head, I pressed my hands to my chest, feeling the pain I always felt during the dream. âI grabbed his shoulders and shook him. I demanded him to keep living. I told him he couldnât die, saving ~my~ life. And I began to cry.â Rubbing my palm over my heart because it was beginning to ache as it always did in the dream, I shook my head, dazed to realize these were ~Urbanâs~ feelings and memories Iâd always experienced. âI wake up crying from that dream every time.â
And it had been Urban I had cried for. Not the dead soldier. Iâd hurt because Urban had hurt.
Not sure how to deal with the fact that Iâd been sharing something so intimate and private, like his grief, with him for the past few weeks, I forced my attention to Allera, hoping to stanch the sudden lump in my chest.
She wiped her eyes. âWhy didnât he ever tell me?â she whispered. âWhy didnât Urban just ~tell~ me he was with Jazon at the end?â
I shook my head because I couldnât answer honestly, but I could make a guess. âAlong with how much it hurts to watch him die, I remember feeling guilty in the dreams. Maybeâ¦â I swallowed and shook my head. âMaybe your brother blames himself. Itâs possible heâs worried that ~you~ would blame him too if you knew Jazon died protecting him.â
That was what the kingâhis fatherâhad done in Urbanâs dreams as soon as heâd learned what happened to Jazon. The High Cliff ruler had blamed meâer, Urbanâand told us all we ever brought to people was death and destruction. Then heâd kicked us out of his army.
âBut I⦠I donât know for certain,â I said. âI can only guess. Theyâre only dreams. Maybe your brother wasnât there after all.â
âNo, your guess sounds like Urban. Unable to stomach the idea that I might blame him for something. Itâs probably the very reason why Father kicked him out of the army, and he gave up his life in High Cliff to come here with me.â With a tsking sound, she shook her head. âIdiot.â
My stomach knotted. âBut you donât, right? Blame him, that is? For your husbandâs death?â
Allera lifted her eyebrows, suddenly intent on me. âAnd if I did?â she said slowly. âWhatâs it to you?â
I pulled back, realizing she was right. I should have no opinion over what she thought of her brother. But I couldnât forget the sorrow and pain I felt in those dreams. ~His~ pain. He had suffered. He didnât need to suffer anymore.
âI just⦠Iâm only saying he had no idea your husband was going to go off and take his place. I have the feeling he wouldnât have let Jazon go if heâd known his plans, and besides, itâs all just a dream anyway. It might not have reallyââ
âWell, look at you,â Allera murmured with a knowing grin. âComing to Urbanâs defense as if you actually care.â
âI donât,â I shot back quickly. So quickly it was obvious I lied. When my cheeks heated, Allera gave a low chuckle as if she understood.
âDonât worry,â she leaned closer to whisper and wink at me, âI wonât tell.â Then, seeming quite smug with herself, she sat back and lifted her voice to normal. âWhat else does my dear brother dream of? Anything good and embarrassing I can tease him about mercilessly?â
My body instantly flushed, remembering ~other~ dreams Iâd been having.
Allera lifted her eyebrows, intrigued. âWell, well. This conversation just became infinitely more interesting.â
âInfinitely more ~embarrassing~,â I muttered, only to set my hand against my stomach and say, âOn the other hand, itâs actually relieving to learn theyâre ~his~ dreams Iâm having. I thought I was turning into aâ¦â Not really wanting to confess to a manâs sister that Iâd been having sex dreams about her brother, I discreetly cleared my throat.
âOr maybe they ~were~ your dreams,â Allera argued with a cheeky smirk.
I rolled my eyes. âClearly, they were his.â
âAnd youâre sure? You saw them from ~his~ point of view, then, did you?â
âNo, Iâ¦â When my voice fell quiet, Allera leaned forward.
âThatâs how you tell the difference, you know. If you see it from his point of view, heâs leading the dream. If you see it from yours, you are.â
âGood God,â I gasped, pressing my hand against the base of my throat as I glanced wildly about the room, hoping no one was listening in on this conversation. âSo⦠So he ~knows~? He knows Iâve been having dreams about us⦠Aboutâ¦?â
Heavens above. This was bad. This was so awkwardly, uncomfortably, embarrassingly bad.
Allera threw her head back and laughed. âOh yes, he knows. And Iâm sure heâs extremely smug about it too.â
âItâs not ~funny~,â I muttered. âIâll never be able to look him in the eye again.â
âLike you look him in the eye now.â There was something slightly resentful and snide in Alleraâs tone, which made me straighten with surprise.
âWhat do you mean by that?â I asked hesitantly.
Allera merely shrugged and glanced away. âNothing. Really. Itâs just⦠Never mind. Forget I said anything. The overprotective big sister in me is trying to come out, I fear.â
âNo, please,â I pressed softly. âTell me. Have I offended you?â
âNot ~me~,â she said, giving me a look. âUrban. You just⦠Well, the way you wanted him kept away from you irritated me. It was as if you thought he had some rare disease that was contagious. Donât go near Urban, heâs suffering from true love, I mustnât catch ~that~.â
âI donât think that way,â I cried.
âOr maybe youâre afraid heâs going to throw you down and rape you because he just canât control his raging hormones,â she went on moodily. âOr maybe you think heâll try to woo you away from your husband, because what a pity ~that~ would be.â She rolled her eyes. âYou do realize heâd never harm you, or disrespect you, or even remotely try to get you to do anything you donât want to do, right?â
âI⦠Of course, I know that. I justââ
âNo, clearly, you ~donât~,â Allera lashed out suddenly. âNot really. Because, let me tell you something, My ~Lady~ Vienne.â Seething, she shifted closer to me. âHe values your life now more than he does his own. More than he does ~mine~. He would never do anything that would make you even slightly uncomfortable. He will respect you and your stupid wishes and everything you value. He will do whatever he can within his power to see that youâre happy, or heâll die trying. So tell me, after all that, could it hurt you even a little to at least be ~friendly~ to the man instead of ignore his entire existence and command him to stay away from you forever?â
My lips parted in shock, a little hurt she felt this way about me. I wasnât sure what to say. Should I tell her Iâd already agreed to give him some attention or let her know he could be beheaded because of me if we got too close?
Stuttering, I ended up tumbling out the words, âI⦠I never meant to hurt him. I just⦠I didnât want to lead him on or let him think I would ever betray my husband for him or⦠I donât know. It just seemed saferâbetterâto avoid all contact.â
âBetter for you or for him?â
âFor both of us,â I answered honestly.
I hadnât wanted to crave something I knew I could never have. And so far, everything I knew about Urban Bjorn seemed definitely crave-worthy. Getting too close to him might hurt; it might damage any sense of hope Iâd ever had, overinflate it until it was too big for me to handle.
âWell, itâs ~not~ better for him,â Allera grumbled, standing to pace with the baby when Anniston started to fuss in her arms. âTrust me, he knows where your loyalties lie. He wonât try to steal you away from Soren. Heâd never try to force you to do anything you didnât want to do. And I realize I keep repeating that, but itâs ~true~. You donât have to worry about him crossing any lines. You just donât. So thatâs why itâs hard for me to understand why you wonât even...â She paused and closed her eyes as if seeking patience with herself before turning toward me again, her gaze full of pleading. âIt would make his day just to receive a smile or a simple hello every once in a while from you.â
âYouâre right,â I said. âIâm so sorry. I didnât realize until last night how much I could help him with such small acts of kindness.â
âLast night?â She frowned, obviously confused.
Feeling caught, I only stared, but Allera sighed and sat back down. âAnd donât apologize. Iâm the one who should apologize. I shouldnât have said all that to you. Urban would kill me if he knew Iâd been so harsh.â
âNo, itâs alright. Iâm glad you said what you were thinking. Thank you for your honesty.â
Alleraâs gaze softened. âWell, thank ~you~ for telling me about Jazon.â
Before either of us could say another word, Urban rushed into the room, out of breath. It was obvious heâd come straight from the training field; he wore dark, tight woolen pants that hugged impressive thighs, a light, loose linen tunic with a snug quilted sleeveless vest over that, and his sword belt cinched at the waist. But the part that captured my attention was the leather codpiece between his legs, sewn to his pants with thick cords to secure it into place. It was the firstâpossibly the onlyâthing I could focus on as he skidded to a halt in front of us, darting worried glances between Allera and me as he panted, out of breath.
I knew the codpiece was purely for protective purposes, but all it seemed to do for me was call attention to what I knew lay beneath, what Iâd felt inside me during our shared dreams.
And oh God, now I couldnât stop blushing.
âWhatâs going on?â he demanded in a winded voice.
