The End is Nigh

Wars Of Love828 words~5 min read

In the eerie silence that lingered over the land, the aftermath of the Gods' cataclysmic battle echoed. Since that unforgettable clash, the divine figures had withdrawn into an ominous silence, leaving behind a world ravaged by their strife.

Amidst the darkened night, the Trojans gathered to honor their fallen prince, Hector, in a solemn burial rite. Lord Priam, Prince Paris, Lady Helen, and Hector's wife, Andromache stood by, gazing mournfully at Hector's pyre as it consumed his mortal remains.

In this moment of profound sorrow, a sudden calamity shattered what little hope lingered. A lightning bolt, as if hurled from the heavens, struck the heart of the protective shield, shattering the technology that sustained the barrier. The dawn of the end seemed imminent.

Chaos erupted as the Trojans scrambled to arm themselves, rallying atop the city walls, prepared to defend their homeland. Years spent behind the protective barrier hadn't dulled their instincts; defending their city was ingrained in their very beings.

However, a glaring issue persisted-the breach in the wall.

The Greeks, taken aback by the spectacle, wasted no time. Agamemnon and Menelaus swiftly marshaled their forces, launching an immediate assault on the city.

Amidst the turmoil, the soldiers' faces lit up with an unfamiliar sense of anticipation; it was as though they sensed the impending conclusion of the war, the chance to finally reunite with their loved ones back home.

Cannonballs and arrows streaked across the night sky, clashing against the Greek forces. Yet, their resolve remained unshaken; they knew this had to be the final confrontation, and they were ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

Through the deserted camp, Achilles raced toward Agamemnon's tent. A guard, startled by Achilles' sudden appearance, attempted to speak, only to be swiftly rendered unconscious by a single blow from Achilles.

Inside the tent, Achilles was met with a chilling sight. Briseis lay bound on the ground, her clothes torn and bloodied, her face bearing the marks of brutality.

As Achilles approached Briseis, his heart sank at the sight of the dark, angry bruises marring her delicate skin. He reached out to touch them, but before he could, Briseis's eyes snapped open and she grabbed his arm with a fierce strength.

"Why are you here?" Her voice was filled with disdain, her eyes blazing with a fury that matched his own.

"Your people don't deserve any of this," Achilles said, his voice heavy with regret as he used his spear to cut through the ropes binding her hands. "I can't undo what I've done, but I will do everything in my power to help you, for as long as I live."

For a moment, Briseis's fiery gaze softened as she looked into Achilles's deep, ocean-colored eyes.

"I'm sorry about Patroklos," she said softly. "He was good."

"He was." Achilles agreed.

With a solemn offering of truce, Achilles extended his arm to her. Briseis regarded it for a heartbeat before placing her hand in his. He gripped her gently and helped her rise, pulling her up from the cold, unforgiving ground into a stand of solidarity.

"I want you to have this." Achilles' voice was imbued with a solemn gravity as he reached around the sturdy leather belt cinched at his waist, his fingers closing around the cool metal of a silver-sheathed spear. With a deliberate motion, he presented it to her. "It was Patroklos', I think he'd want you to have it."

Briseis' hands trembled slightly as she accepted the sheathed weapon, her fingers brushing against the intricate engravings that adorned its surface. As she gripped it, her touch inadvertently triggered a mechanism, and the spear extended with a swift, fluid motion to its full, formidable length. The sudden transformation startled her, sending a shiver of surprise through her arms and causing her to take an involuntary step back.

A light, affectionate laugh escaped Achilles as he watched her reaction, the sound warm in the cool air. Briseis shot him a quick, reproachful look, her brows knitting together in a frown that didn't quite reach her eyes.

"Patroklos had the very same reaction the first time," Achilles said, his smile tinged with nostalgia as he lost himself for a moment in the bittersweet memories of his beloved comrade.

He pointed to a small, unassuming button on the spear's shaft. "This is what controls the transformation. Press it, and the spear will shift from a compact rod back to its extended form. Aside from that, it functions just as any other spear would." His explanation was thorough, ensuring she understood the weapon's unique feature.

Briseis nodded, her expression hardening with resolve as she mentally rehearsed the mechanism. "Understood. Now let's go kill that son of a bitch."

With a shared sense of purpose, they turned away from the relative safety of their encampment. Together, they strode with determined pace toward the city, where plumes of smoke rose and the distant roar of flames and chaos signalled the battle that awaited them.
