Part 30

The 'Outcast' - First Year1,453 words~8 min read

After the homecoming event had passed, the Junior Cup tournament was ready to begin again. While Ash still had victory on his mind, he found himself troubled. with conflicting feelings from the weekend. For the first time in a while, he felt like his old self after having an unforgettable time at Homecoming on Friday. Lately, though, that honey-blonde performer kept occupying his thoughts. It was almost as if she always managed to bring out the best in him...

Lumiose City, Sycamore High

In the middle of a fierce battle, Trip had easily defeated Calem in his opening match. Now, he was facing Lucas, a trainer from the Sinnoh region known for his strategic, defensive style. Below them, Ash sat in the stands with his friends Barry and Calem. Calem was completely engaged in the match, while Barry was distracted, fidgeting in his seat. Ash, however, was hardly paying attention. His mind wandered again to the honey-blonde girl.

"Ash? Hey, Ash!" Calem called, waving a hand in front of his face. Ash blinked and snapped out of his daydream to look at Calem.

"Are you alright?" Calem asked, his expression concerned. Ash gave a slow nod, settling back into his seat with his arms crossed, attempting to refocus on the match.

"Is something wrong, bro?" Calem asked again.

"Huh?" Ash responded, not catching the question.

"I said, is something wrong with you?" Calem repeated.

"Oh, no, I'm fine," Ash said quickly, though his tone was less convincing than he'd hoped. He didn't like making others worry, but it was becoming obvious.

"No? So, what's up? Are you tired or something?" Calem asked.

"Tired? Yeah... something like that," Ash mumbled, clearly not fully engaged. Calem seemed to accept the answer for now, though he mentally noted to check on Ash after the match to figure out what was really going on.

"Ohhh! Serperior lands that Solarbeam right on target and knocks out Lucas' Empoleon in the final minute! That's crucial timing, and with that, Trip becomes the first trainer to secure a spot in the round of 16, having already won two matches!" Freddy, the announcer, exclaimed through the microphone. The crowd erupted into applause as Trip claimed victory.

"Looks like Trip's heading to the round of 16 after all," Calem said, finally sitting down.

"Well, now that that's over, let's take a look at possible opponents for Trip in the next round," Don George suggested. "In the other bracket, he could face Cameron, a strong trainer from Unova," Freddy added.

"Could be an interesting matchup if things stand as they are," Don George said. "Anyways, battle fans, stay tuned for the next match of the day, featuring Ash against Remo, a powerful Mega Evolution user from Kalos," he concluded, signaling the end of the segment.

Ash, Barry, and Calem left the stands and made their way toward the Plaza outside the stadium. Barry led the way, walking alongside Calem, while Ash trailed behind, deep in thought. Calem noticed this and slowed his pace, throwing an arm around Ash's shoulder in a gesture of concern.

"Ash, what's going on? I know you're the type to keep things to yourself, but it's pretty clear something's bothering you," Calem observed. Ash glanced up at him for a moment, a trace of stubbornness in his gaze. Maybe it was about time to open up...

"Lately, I've been feeling different. I don't know why, but I just don't like being alone anymore," Ash confessed. He wasn't great at expressing his emotions, and his hesitance made it harder for Calem to fully understand.

"What do you mean?" Calem asked, puzzled.

"I might be overthinking it, but sometimes I find myself being rude to others just so they'll leave me alone. And then when they do, I feel bad about it," Ash explained. Calem listened intently, recalling a conversation he'd had with Gary a while ago.

"It sounds to me like you're struggling to be your true self," Calem observed.

Ash furrowed his brow. "What do you mean by that?"

"Not trying to put anything harsh, but I think... maybe you're holding yourself back from being open with people. You seem to be hiding behind a wall," Calem said carefully.

Before Ash could respond, Barry interrupted. "Hey, I'm sensing some tension here, but we should probably hurry up. Paul and the others are waiting for us," Barry called out, pointing ahead to the purple-haired trainer. Ash and Calem nodded, following Barry at a slower pace. If Ash was being honest, Calem's words weren't wrong. The number of times he pushed people away instead of just being himself was starting to add up.

"Hey, guys! You see my match against Lucas?" Trip called out casually.

"Yep! We were watching. Congrats on making it to the knockouts!" Barry said, clapping Trip on the back.

"Thanks, but I've still got a lot more to prove. I want to top my group and show everyone who's really in charge here," Trip replied with a grin. Hearing Trip's cockiness Paul scoffed. "Get a little bit more cocky why don't you." Meanwhile, Ash stood to the side contemplating what Calem had just told him moments earlier about being his true self. As he was in deep thought he felt a light tap on his shoulder. He turned to see an unfamiliar blue short haired girl smiling with her hands behind her back.

"Can I help you with something?" He asked, trying to sound polite. Though right away Ash could tell this girl was not here because she needed something. She was there to tell him something.

"Well, I was just wondering," she began, her voice soft and teasing, "if you were single?" She let out a little giggle, her eyes scanning his face with a flirtatious gleam.

Ash blinked, completely thrown off by the comment.

"Uh... what do you mean?" he asked, genuinely confused.

She stepped a little closer, her fingers lightly brushing the sleeve of his jacket. "Oh, you know, just noticing how cute you look when you're deep in thought," she teased, her voice light but confident. "I'm sure it's even more irresistible when you smile."

Ash's confusion only deepened. He narrowed his eyes slightly trying to figure out where this was going. "Oh, um, I wasn't really thinking about anything like that. Just... you know... some stuff." He felt his nervousness growing as the girl's smile widened.

"You really don't know, do you?" she asked with a playful tilt of her head, her eyes locking onto his. "Well, I'll give you a hint... You should smile more, Ash. It suits you," she added, her tone now soft and suggestive, lingering just a little too long on his name.

'Wait a minute. She knows my name?!' Ash thought to himself.

Ash, still not entirely understanding, scratched his head awkwardly. "Oh... thanks?" He offered another nervous smile before glancing away. "I guess I should... I mean, I'm just trying to figure some things out..."

The girl's smile softened, her voice suddenly a little more teasing. "Well, if you ever want someone to talk to... or maybe just a little company while you figure it all out..." She trailed off, leaving the invitation hanging in the air.

Ash's face turned slightly redder, and he chuckled nervously. "Uh, yeah... maybe sometime." He wasn't entirely sure how to respond, but he was grateful that the conversation hadn't gone any further.

The girl giggled again, her eyes glinting mischievously. "I'll hold you to that," she said with a wink before turning and walking away, leaving Ash standing there, completely bewildered by the whole exchange.

As she disappeared into the crowd, Ash sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. "I really need to figure out what's going on with me..." he muttered to himself, still unaware of the flirtatious encounter he had just experienced.

Meanwhile, Miette made her way back to her group of friends—Ursula, Georgia, and Burgundy.

"I think you really got to him, Miette," Ursula remarked with a sly grin. "That's the most emotion I've seen from him so far." The girls continued to chatter and giggle about the scene that had just played out. Miette, in particular...

"I hope Serena saw who had the guts to actually talk to him face-to-face," Miette muttered under her breath.

A/N: Apologizes for the delayed update. This chapter was supposed to be up yesterday afternoon but I was not able to access Wattpad for some reason. Also I'd like to add that I have figured out the issue about the inconsistencies. I should be updating regularly from now on. I know how annoying it can get to wait an entire week for an update to be published on a weekend.
