Part 34

The 'Outcast' - First Year2,040 words~11 min read

That same day after school when Jack and Calem had gone over to Lysandre's office to talk about the consequences of their actions. Calem came to understand the situations just a little bit better. The same went for Jack though will a little more hesitation on his end. Anyways now with Ash...

It was a crisp afternoon in Vaniville Town. Ash strolled down a familiar path with Pikachu perched on his shoulder, the little Pokémon happily chatting away, his ears twitching with excitement.

"Hey, Pikachu, I never thought Vaniville Town would be so peaceful," Ash remarked, glancing at the peaceful scenery. It had been a while since he had time to himself, away from the hustle of traveling and battling.

Pikachu gave a small, contented "Pika!" in agreement, enjoying the calm too.

The reason he was having a nice peaceful stroll today was to get his mind off the chaos which had unfolded earlier that day during lunch, but also due to the conflicting emotions troubling him about her, that performer girl who seemed to be occupying his thoughts more and more as the days went on.

As Ash walked along, lost in thought, he suddenly heard footsteps approaching from behind. Turning around, his eyes widened in surprise.

"Serena?" Ash called out, enthusiasm lighting up his voice.

Serena, the blonde-haired girl who lived nearby, was walking toward him with a soft smile on her face. She was holding her bag casually in one hand, and her gaze lingered on Ash for a moment before she spoke up.

"Hey, Ash! What are you doing here all by yourself?" Serena asked, her voice warm and friendly, though there was a glint of curiosity in her eyes.

Ash shrugged, looking down at Pikachu before answering. "Oh, just thought I'd take a walk. It's been a while since I had a moment like this to just clear my head."

Serena raised an eyebrow, sensing that there was something more behind his words. She walked closer, her steps light, and glanced up at him.

"You look like something's on your mind, Ash," she said gently, trying not to pry but clearly concerned. "Is everything okay?"

Ash paused, his gaze drifting for a moment. Normally, he would brush off questions like this, or at least deflect with some casual answer. But for some reason, standing here with Serena in the quiet of Vaniville, he felt a little more at ease. He sighed, looking down at the ground before meeting her eyes.

"Actually... I've been feeling kind of like an outcast," Ash admitted, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. "I mean, I'm always traveling, meeting new people, and... sometimes it feels like I don't really fit in anywhere."

Serena blinked, surprised by his honesty. She hadn't expected Ash, of all people, to feel that way. He always seemed so confident, so mellow, But now, she saw a side of him that was a little more vulnerable—something that made her heart ache in sympathy.

"Outcast?" Serena repeated softly, her brow furrowing in thought. "But you've got Pikachu with you, right? You've got friends... You've never seemed like an outcast to me."

Ash chuckled softly, but there was a hint of sadness in his eyes. "Yeah, I've got Pikachu. And I've met a lot of amazing people. But sometimes I feel like... I'm just always moving around. Like I'm constantly on the outside looking in. I don't have a place to stay, or a group that feels like 'home.' It gets lonely sometimes."

Serena's expression softened, her heart warming with a mix of affection and concern. She took a step closer, her voice gentle but sincere.

"Hey, that doesn't make you an outcast," she said. "Sometimes, it's easy to feel alone when you're not in one place for long. But... you've made a lot of friends, and you've helped so many people, Ash. You might not always feel like you belong in one place, but that doesn't mean you don't have a place in the hearts of everyone you've met."

Ash blinked, taken back by her words. He wasn't used to hearing such heartfelt things from others. He opened his mouth to respond but found himself at a loss for words.

Serena smiled softly, a faint blush coloring her cheeks as she looked up at him. She seemed to hesitate for just a moment before speaking again.

"I think... you've got a place with all of us, Ash. You might not see it, but we're all lucky to know you." She gave him a shy but warm smile, her heart racing just a little. At last she was getting somewhere with her crush. Even though he was extremely oblivious.

Ash, ever oblivious, scratched the back of his head awkwardly, his usual cheerfulness returning momentarily. "Haha, you really think so?"

"Of course," Serena replied, her smile never faltering. "You've inspired so many people. I think you're more important to everyone around you than you realize."

Ash grinned, his eyes lighting up. "Thanks, Serena! I guess you're right. I've still got Pikachu and my friends, so maybe I'm not as alone as I thought."

"Exactly," Serena said, her tone light but meaningful. "And besides, you've got people who care about you, even if you don't always see it."

Pikachu, who had been listening to the conversation intently, piped up with a cheerful "Pikachu!" as he gave Serena an approving glance.

Ash smiled and knelt down to give Pikachu a scratch behind the ears. "Thanks, buddy," he said before standing up again. "Wow, I feel a lot better now. Thanks, Serena."

Serena's heart skipped a beat at the warmth in Ash's voice. She smiled to herself, glad to have helped him, even if just a little.

"No problem," she replied, her voice soft but sincere. "I'm always here if you want to talk."

Ash, still unaware of Serena's deeper feelings, smiled in return. "I'll keep that in mind. You're a great friend, Serena."

Serena's smile lingered, but there was a quiet ache in her heart as she watched Ash turn back toward the path. She knew he was oblivious to her feelings, but for now, she was content just to be there for him. She followed a few steps behind, Pikachu still on Ash's shoulder, the two of them heading down the peaceful road of Vaniville.

The sun had dipped lower in the sky as Ash and Serena continued walking down the peaceful streets of Vaniville. The town, usually so quiet, felt even more serene with the two of them walking side by side.

Pikachu, still on Ash's shoulder, was chatting away happily, making little sounds of joy as the trio moved along. Ash occasionally tossed a remark to Pikachu, but his attention was mostly on the path ahead. Serena, however, was trying to act casual while her heart fluttered in her chest.

As they walked, Serena couldn't help but glance over at Ash from time to time. He was walking so confidently, so easily. And yet, here she was, standing so close to him, trying not to give away the fact that being near him was making her incredibly nervous. She tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear, pretending to be focused on the scenery.

"So," Ash said, breaking the silence between them. "I don't think I've ever asked you, but what's it like living in Vaniville?"

Serena blinked, slightly startled by the question. "Oh! Well, it's pretty peaceful here. Not much excitement, but that's not always a bad thing." She gave a nervous laugh, hoping it didn't sound too awkward. "It's actually nice. My mom runs a Pokémon performance studio, and I help out there sometimes."

"Oh, that sounds pretty cool!" Ash said, his voice genuinely interested. "I bet that's a lot of fun, huh?"

Serena smiled softly, her cheeks heating up just a little. "Yeah, it's nice. It's... it's my place. But sometimes, I wish I could travel more, like you do."

Ash grinned. "Well, you've got plenty of time for that! I bet you'd be awesome traveling and doing your own thing."

Serena's heart skipped at the way Ash said it, as if he believed in her abilities more than she did. She looked away for a moment, trying to hide her blush. "Maybe... I'll see what happens."

They walked in comfortable silence for a few more minutes, the gentle sounds of the town surrounding them. Serena tried her best to remain casual, but being so close to Ash felt different now—more real. With every step they took, her heart seemed to race a little faster. She felt her palms getting slightly clammy, but she wiped them on her skirt, hoping Ash wouldn't notice.

They had reached the street where she lived. She stopped and glanced at Ash, who had been so wrapped up in the conversation that he didn't seem to realize they had arrived.

"Oh! Right, this is your place!" Ash said, his eyes lighting up with recognition. "Well, thanks for walking with me, Serena! It was nice talking to you."

Serena smiled brightly, trying to keep her nerves under control. "Yeah, it was nice! I'm glad we had the chance to talk."

As Ash began to take a few steps back, Serena hesitated. There was something she wanted to say, but it felt silly. What if it sounded too forward?

"Um, Ash... maybe... we could hang out again sometime?" she asked, her voice soft and a little unsure, but hopeful all the same.

Ash turned around, his usual clueless smile lighting up his face. "Sure! I'd like that. I'll catch you later, okay?"

"Yeah! Later, Ash," Serena replied, feeling a blush creep up her neck.

With a wave, Ash turned around and headed back toward the direction of the town's center. Serena watched him go, the fluttering in her chest still there as she stood outside her house, feeling like her legs might give out from under her.

As she finally took a deep breath and turned to the door, the familiar sound of footsteps echoed behind her. She quickly opened the door, not realizing that her mother, Grace, had been standing just inside, watching the entire exchange with a knowing smile.

"Well, well, look who's back," Grace said with a teasing tone, crossing her arms as she leaned against the doorframe. "I see you've been taking a walk with someone special."

Serena froze, her face turning a bright shade of red. "Mom! What are you talking about?"

Grace raised an eyebrow, her playful expression not leaving her face. "Oh, come on. I've been watching you. You're practically glowing. Ash, huh? My, my, looks like someone's got a bit of a crush." She grinned, clearly enjoying her teasing.

"I—" Serena stammered, looking anywhere but her mother's amused expression. "It's not like that! We were just talking. He's a friend, Mom."

Grace chuckled softly, walking past Serena to close the door behind them. "I'm not saying it's anything serious, sweetie, but you can't fool me. You're definitely different when he's around."

Serena rolled her eyes, trying to act like she wasn't embarrassed. "We're just friends, okay? Don't make a big deal out of it."

"Oh, I'm not making a big deal out of it," Grace replied with a wink. "But it's nice to see you getting close to someone. Ash seems like a great boy."

Serena sighed, trying to hide her flushed face. "I don't even know what you're talking about. You're just imagining things."

"Sure, sure," Grace said with a smirk. "But if you ever want to talk about anything... you know I'll be more than happy to listen."

Serena, still red-faced, hurried into the house and immediately headed for her room, trying to escape her mother's teasing gaze. As she closed the door behind her, she leaned against it, her heart still racing from the walk with Ash.

Maybe... just maybe, she thought, there's something there.
