Midweek has arrived which meant it was time for the Junior cup to officially get back underway.
The stadium buzzed with noise as the crowd leaned forward in anticipation, the energy palpable. Trip stood at the center of the battlefield, his arms crossed as his Pokémon â a Serperior â slithered gracefully in front of him. His opponent's Pokémon lay knocked out on the ground, the battle already over.
The referee raised a hand. "Serperior is unable to battle! Trip wins!"
Trip barely reacted. He returned Serperior to its Poké Ball and tucked it into his jacket with a calm, almost detached expression. He had already secured his spot in the next round, so this battle had been more of a formality than a challenge.
Up in the stands, Ash sat back in his seat, arms crossed, eyes half-lidded. He hadn't paid much attention to the battle. His mind was elsewhere.
Leaf's words from yesterday echoed in his head like a broken record:
"You've got a crush."
Ash frowned slightly, his foot tapping against the floor beneath him. A crush on Serena... Him? Liking Serena? He had known her for so long, but somehow he had never considered that this was what he had been feeling. Now that Leaf had said it out loud, it made too much sense â the flutter in his chest when Serena smiled at him, the way his mind blanked whenever she touched his arm, how his pulse quickened when their eyes met.
But... what was he supposed to do about it? Just walk up to her and tell her, "Hey, Serena, I think I might like you?" That sounded ridiculous. He wasn't even sure how this kind of thing worked.
"Trip remains undefeated in the group stage!" Freddy's voice boomed over the speakers. "That's three wins out of three â Trip is officially at the top of Group C!"
Trip walked off the battlefield without so much as a glance at the crowd. He passed by Ash, barely acknowledging him with a slight tilt of his head. "Good luck, Ash," Trip said calmly.
Ash blinked. "Uh... thanks."
Trip walked off toward the stands where Paul, Gary, Barry, Sawyer, Alain, and Tobias were already sitting. Paul sat with his arms crossed, his usual cold expression unchanging. Gary leaned back with a smug smirk, while Barry was practically bouncing in his seat from the adrenaline of the last battle. Alain sat quietly, his gaze focused, while Sawyer had his notebook open, furiously scribbling down notes. Tobias, the most mysterious of them all, simply sat with his arms folded, looking completely unbothered.
Freddy's voice returned over the speakers. "And now... up next is Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town for his third and final battle in the group stage!"
Ash stood up, exhaling through his nose as he rolled his shoulders. He had already qualified for the next round, so this wasn't about pressure â it was about keeping his momentum. He adjusted his hat and started toward the battlefield.
"And now," Freddy continued with an extra edge of excitement in his voice, "we'd like to welcome a very special guest in attendance today! Please give a warm welcome to the Champion of the Sinnoh region â Cynthia!"
The crowd erupted into cheers as a tall, elegant figure stepped forward near the VIP seating. Ash's eyes widened slightly when he saw her.
Cynthia.
She was stunning â long, silky blonde hair that cascaded behind her knees, with two large side curls framing her face. Her golden teardrop-shaped hair ornaments glinted under the stadium lights. The heavy black coat she wore, with its fur-trimmed sleeves and hem, gave her an aura of mystery and dominance. The silver ornament clasped at her chest reflected the sunlight, and her striking gray eyes scanned the field with quiet intensity.
Cynthia gave a slight smile and raised a hand toward the crowd in polite acknowledgment. Her expression remained composed, but her presence alone radiated authority.
"She's watching?" Ash muttered to himself.
"You better not blow it," Gary called down from the stands with a smirk.
"Yeah, don't embarrass yourself in front of the Champion!" Barry added, laughing.
Ash narrowed his eyes, his competitive edge sharpening. If Cynthia was watching, then there was no way he was going to hold back.
He stepped onto the field, his cap casting a shadow over his eyes. Pikachu hopped onto his shoulder, sparks crackling from his red cheeks.
"All right," Ash muttered, his gaze hardening. "Let's do this."
From the stands, Cynthia's gaze lingered on Ash for a moment longer. A small smile played at the corners of her lips.
This should be interesting.
The battlefield was alive with energy as Ash and Stephan stood face-to-face under the bright lights of the Junior Cup stadium. The crowd murmured with anticipation, and even Cynthia's eyes were locked on the trainers below.
Malik, a tall, sharp-eyed man from Hoenn dressed in a sleek black and white referee uniform, raised his hand. "This will be a 30-minute battleâ15 minutes each half. Trainers may make substitutions at any time. After halftime, you will have a brief period to adjust your strategies." His gaze sharpened. "Understood?"
"Got it!" Ash and Stephan said in unison, their voices echoing across the field.
Malik nodded approvingly. "Shake hands."
Ash stepped forward, extending his hand toward Stephan. Stephan grinned and clasped it firmly. "I've seen your battles, Ash. You're strong. This is gonna be a good one."
Ash smiled faintly. "Wouldn't have it any other way."
The handshake broke as they both took several paces back to their designated trainer boxes.
Malik's arm shot upward. "Send out your Pokémon!"
Ash's hand instinctively moved to his belt. His fingers brushed against the familiar Pokéball, his gaze sharp and focused. "Lucarioâlet's do this!"
In a flash of red light, Lucario emerged, his steely blue frame poised and ready, crimson eyes flashing with determination. His aura pulsed through the field.
"Zebstrika, let's go!" Stephan called, throwing his Pokéball.
A burst of white light revealed the sleek, black-and-white striped figure of Zebstrika, its electric mane crackling as it stomped the ground. Sparks danced along the field.
Lucario and Zebstrika locked eyes, sizing each other up. The tension between them crackled as Malik's hand sliced the air.
"BEGIN!"
Referee Malik from Hoenn
"Alright, Lucario, let's show them what we're made of!" Ash called, his voice steady despite the intensity of the battle.
"Zebstrika, let's light things up!" Stephan responded, his voice full of confidence.
Zebstrika stamped its hooves, its mane crackling with electricity. It charged forward, lightning-fast, a streak of white and black blurring as it headed directly toward Lucario.
"Watch out, Lucario! Use Detect!" Ash shouted, his voice clear and commanding.
Lucario's eyes flared with intensity. In an instant, the aura around him flared as his body shifted just slightly, narrowly avoiding Zebstrika's Wild Charge. The attack passed by with a thunderous crack, leaving a trail of sparks where it had been.
"Nice dodge, Lucario! Now, follow up with Aura Sphere!" Ash shouted, determination clear in his voice.
Lucario's body glowed a soft blue as he pulled his paws close together, channeling the power of his aura into a ball of pure energy. With a swift movement, he launched it at Zebstrika. The ball of energy streaked across the battlefield like a shooting star.
Zebstrika, quick on its hooves, skidded sideways, using Quick Attack to avoid the brunt of the Aura Sphere. However, the edges of the blast hit it, sending Zebstrika stumbling back a few steps, its body flickering with electric power as it regained its footing.
"Not bad, Ash! But Zebstrika's speed is what makes it dangerous! Let's go, ZebstrikaâWild Charge again!" Stephan commanded, grinning.
"Lucario, Counter it!" Ash countered instantly.
Zebstrika surged forward with blazing speed, crackling electricity dancing around it. The force of the Wild Charge rattled the air, as the electrifying attack roared toward Lucario, but Lucario was ready. His body glowed with the same blue aura as before as he stood his ground.
The moment Wild Charge connected, Lucario took the full brunt of the attack, his body absorbing the electrical charge. But with incredible focus, Lucario used the impact to his advantage. As the electricity surged through his body, he tapped into his own energy reserves, redirecting the power to launch a massive Counter. Lucario's fist was wrapped in pure aura energy as he struck out at Zebstrika.
The collision was deafening. The force of the counter sent Zebstrika flying backwards, its mane flickering and sparking wildly as it hit the ground, groaning in pain.
"Zebstrika!" Stephan shouted, his eyes widening in concern.
"Lucario, finish it with Bone Rush!" Ash yelled, his voice sharp and focused.
Lucario's eyes narrowed as he summoned his Bone Rush technique. His aura swirled around his body, and he formed a long, glowing bone from the energy, ready to strike. Lucario charged forward with incredible speed, moving faster than most would expect for his stature.
With a powerful swing, Lucario's bone slammed into Zebstrika, sending the electric-type skidding across the battlefield. The force of the blow was enough to knock Zebstrika unconscious, its body twitching slightly before it finally came to a complete stop.
"Zebstrika is unable to battle," Malik called out, raising his hand and signaling the end of the round. "Lucario wins this round."
The crowd erupted into cheers, their applause echoing across the stadium. Ash's heart raced with excitement as he raised his fist in the air. "You did it, Lucario!"
Lucario stood tall, chest heaving as he lowered the glowing bone, panting slightly but looking proud. His glowing eyes locked with Ash's, and Ash could see the respect and determination in his partner's gaze.
"That was a good battle, Stephan," Ash said, his voice filled with gratitude. "You and Zebstrika were amazing."
Stephan grinned, wiping a small amount of sweat from his forehead. "You weren't bad yourself, Ash. Lucario's a powerhouse."
As the battle between Ash and Stephan raged on, Serena watched the intense match. Her blue eyes sparkled with admiration, her gaze fixed on Ash as he commanded Lucario with such focus and determination. Every movement Ash made, every strategic decision, left her heart fluttering in her chest.
She couldn't help but beam with pride, a soft smile forming on her lips. To anyone else, it might've seemed like a simple battle, but to Serena, it was so much more. She had always known Ash was a talented trainer, but seeing him perform at this level made her appreciate him even more. His bond with his Pokémon, his unwavering confidenceâit all made him so... incredible.
"Wow, Ash really is amazing," Serena murmured, her voice filled with awe. Her hand lightly gripped the edge of her seat, barely able to contain her excitement.
Beside her, Misty and May exchanged knowing glances, both recognizing the twinkle in Serena's eyes. They could tell that Ash had a special place in Serena's heart, even if she wasn't ready to fully admit it just yet.
A few seats away, Cynthiaâan imposing figure in her long, elegant black coat, with her signature teardrop ornaments glinting in the lightâwatched the match with a quiet smile. Her grey eyes were sharp, analyzing every move the trainers made. Despite her usually stoic demeanor, there was a clear sense of respect for Ash's abilities. She had seen many battles in her time as the Sinnoh Champion, but the way Ash and Lucario worked together left an impression on her.
"Impressive," Cynthia murmured to herself, the corner of her mouth lifting slightly. "He's certainly not your average trainer." Even though they had history, Cynthia was immensely impressed at how much stronger Ash had gotten.
The atmosphere in the stadium grew tense as Stephan reached for a Poké Ball and threw it high into the air. "Alright, Sawk, it's your turn!" he called confidently.
The ball burst open, releasing a burst of light that formed into Sawk, the Fighting-type Pokémon. Sawk landed with a firm thud on the ground, its muscular legs flexing as it glared at Lucario.
Ash's heart raced as he locked eyes with his opponent. "Lucario, are you ready?" he called, his voice steady and confident.
Lucario gave a firm nod, his aura glowing brightly as he prepared for the next round. Despite Sawk's obvious strength, Ash knew Lucario had the advantage with his ability to think strategically and his incredible speed.
"Let's do this, Lucario! Start with Close Combat!" Ash commanded, knowing full well that Lucario could handle the power of Sawk's raw strength.
Lucario blurred with speed, rushing forward with incredible agility. His body twisted and turned as he aimed a flurry of fast, powerful punches at Sawk.
"Block it, Sawk! Use Brick Break!" Stephan called.
Sawk leaped into action, its fists glowing with a powerful orange aura as it blocked each of Lucario's punches with precise, calculated movements. Each impact sent shockwaves through the arena. Sawk's strength was immense, but Lucario's quickness kept him just out of range.
"Lucario, Counter!" Ash shouted.
Lucario's body radiated blue energy as he deftly avoided Sawk's strike, redirecting the force with his own counterattack. Lucario's fist glowed brightly as he struck Sawk's side with incredible force, sending the Fighting-type stumbling backward.
"Sawk, shake it off and hit back with Karate Chop!" Stephan ordered, his voice firm.
Sawk, with determination in its eyes, charged forward once more, its hand glowing as it aimed for Lucario's chest. The force of the attack was tremendous, but Lucario saw it coming.
"Dodge and use Aura Sphere!" Ash called, his eyes locked on his partner.
With lightning-fast reflexes, Lucario swayed to the side, his body bending at an impossible angle to avoid the incoming Karate Chop. In one fluid motion, he gathered his energy into a glowing blue sphere and launched it directly at Sawk. The Aura Sphere streaked through the air, its power surging forward with immense speed.
Sawk took the full brunt of the attack, the energy ball exploding on impact and sending the Fighting-type skidding back. Sawk struggled to regain its balance, its body glowing with fatigue from the powerful hit.
"Sawk, don't give up! Use Focus Punch!" Stephan urged, clenching his fists in determination.
Sawk, despite the damage, charged forward once more, its body glowing with intense focus. Its fist was surrounded by a glowing orange aura as it wound up for a devastating punch.
"Lucario, Protect!" Ash shouted, refusing to let his partner take the full brunt of the attack.
Lucario crossed his arms, his body enveloped in a shimmering green barrier. The punch hit the shield with a tremendous crash, but Lucario remained unharmed, his barrier holding strong.
"Sawk's getting tired! Let's finish this, Lucario! Bone Rush!" Ash declared, his voice filled with conviction.
Lucario's aura flared again as he summoned a glowing bone from his energy. He charged forward, moving so quickly that Sawk had little time to react. With a swift swing, Lucario struck Sawk across the chest, sending the Fighting-type flying backwards with a force that left the crowd in awe.
Sawk struggled to rise, clearly exhausted. With a final groan, the Fighting-type collapsed, unable to continue.
"Sawk is unable to battle!" Malik, the referee, called out, raising his hand and signaling the end of the match. "Lucario is the winner!"
The stadium erupted in cheers as Ash pumped his fist in the air, a wide grin breaking across his face. "You did it, Lucario!"
Lucario stood tall, his aura glowing brightly as he gave a satisfied nod. His breathing was heavy, but he was still standing strong. Ash felt a rush of pride for his partner.
Referee Malik, standing tall at the edge of the battlefield with his sharp gaze fixed on the action, glanced down at his wristwatch. After a few more seconds, he raised the whistle to his lips, his fingers poised with precision.
The sharp sound of the whistle echoed through the arena, cutting through the tension in the air. Malik's voice rang out, clear and authoritative.
"Half-time!" he called, his tone unwavering. "Both trainers, take a break! You have five minutes to discuss tactics and make any necessary substitutions."
Lucario staggered slightly, clearly tired but determined to continue.
As the announcer's words reached the crowd, a wave of murmurs and excitement rippled through the stands. The audience knew this was no ordinary battleâAsh and Stephan were giving it their all.
"Great job, Lucario," Ash said, his voice full of admiration. "Just hang in there a little longer, buddy. We've got this."
Malik observed the trainers as they retreated to their respective corners, giving them space for their strategy discussions. His job was simple, but essential: to make sure the battle stayed fair and in line with the tournament rules.
The break was over. Referee Malik stepped forward, his sharp eyes scanning both trainers and their Pokémon. The time had come to finish what they had started.
"Alright, trainers! Back to your positions!" Malik called out, his voice clear and authoritative. He glanced down at his watch before blowing his whistle.
The crowd went silent as the second half of the battle began. Ash returned to the battlefield with Lucario by his side, ready for whatever Stephan had in store. Stephan, with a determined look in his eyes, tossed a Poké Ball into the air.
"Liepard, you're up!" he called as the sleek, dark-colored Pokémon emerged onto the field with a graceful leap. Its eyes narrowed, and it immediately assumed a stance of readiness, eager to prove its worth.
Ash gave Lucario a reassuring nod. "You can do this, Lucario. We've got one more round in us. Let's finish strong!"
Stephan wasted no time. "Liepard, use Night Slash!"
Liepard darted forward, its claws glowing with dark energy as it aimed to strike Lucario. But Lucario, ever the calm and composed fighter, side-stepped with ease, using his agility to avoid the attack.
"Now, Lucario! Aura Sphere!" Ash commanded, his voice steady and firm. Lucario gathered energy in his paws, launching a powerful Aura Sphere that collided with Liepard head-on. The attack sent Liepard skidding back, visibly shaken but still determined.
"Impressive..." Stephan muttered, gritting his teeth. "Liepard, use Feint attack!"
Liepard charged again, attempting to confuse and disorient Lucario with a quick, feinting attack. But Lucario, calm as ever, took the hit with minimal effect, his strong resolve unshaken.
"You're not going to fool us that easily," Ash said with a slight smirk. "Lucario, finish it with a Close Combat!"
Lucario unleashed a flurry of powerful punches and kicks, overwhelming Liepard with speed and precision.
â
As the Malik blew his whistle once again, signaling the end of the match. The crowd erupted into applause as the outcome was decided.
Ash raised his fist in triumph, smiling in victory as Lucario stood proudly by his side. On the sidelines, the others watched with mixed reactions. Sawyer's eyes widened in admiration.
"Wow... That was incredible," Sawyer said, his voice full of respect. "Lucario's strategy was flawless."
Tobias remained as stoic as ever, not showing much emotion, but his eyes gave away a hint of approval. Paul, standing with Barry and Gary, cheered for Ash, the slightest smirk tugging at his lips. Even Cynthia, watching from the stands, couldn't hide her small smile of admiration.
"You've definitely improved, Ash," she said quietly to herself. "You're one of a kind."
Ash didn't hear Cynthia's words, lost in the feeling of his victory, but the crowd's energy around him made it clear he had earned the respect of everyone watching. The Junior Cup was just getting started, and he was ready for whatever came next.
