Miles didnât know what was worse: Hyperionâs smirk as he loomed closer or the systemâs cheerful and utterly useless commentary.
âHyperion is closing in. Distance: 10 meters. Probability of capture: 72%. Suggestion: Start running.â
âYeah, no kidding!â Miles hissed under his breath as he darted down an alleyway. His heart pounded, and he glanced back to see Hyperion striding after him, not running, just confidently walking like he had all the time in the world.
âHey! Stop playing hard to get!â Hyperion called out, his voice rich with amusement.
âNo thanks!â Miles shouted back, turning a corner so sharply he nearly ran into a stack of barrels. âSystem, help me out here. How do I lose him?â
âRolling for an escape routeâ¦â
A pause.
âCritical success. Turn left at the next corner, leap over the crates, and enter the bakery on your right.â
Miles didnât question it. He turned, vaulted over a stack of crates (barely), and burst into a bakery filled with the smell of fresh bread and confused customers. He dashed past the counter, startling the baker, and dove through the back door.
Hyperionâs voice echoed faintly behind him. âReally? A bakery? Thatâs your brilliant hideout?â
Miles kept running. âI swear, this guy is like a mosquito that just wonât quit.â
âCorrection: Mosquitoes can be swatted. Hyperion is 94% more persistent.â
âNot helpful!â
After what felt like hours (it was probably ten minutes, but adrenaline made time weird), Miles finally managed to lose Hyperion. Or so he hoped. He ducked into a quiet shop, panting, his nerves on edge. The shopkeeper, a portly man with an impressive mustache, gave him a once-over.
âYou look like youâve been chased by a demon,â the shopkeeper said.
âClose enough,â Miles muttered. âI need a disguise. Something that says âordinary, unremarkable person.ââ
The shopkeeper raised an eyebrow but gestured to a rack of clothes. Miles rifled through them, looking for something simple. His fingers landed on a set of earthy-colored robes that seemed plain enough.
âSuggestion: Roll for disguise effectiveness.â
âSure, why not.â Miles rolled, and the system let out a smug âNatural 20. Youâll blend in so well even your own mother wouldnât recognize you.â
If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
He grinned. âFinally, some good luck.â
Moments later, he stepped out of the shop, now dressed like a modest merchant, complete with a leather satchel and a wide-brimmed hat. He even threw in a fake accent when he spoke to the shopkeeper on his way out.
âThank you kindly, good sir,â he said, tipping the hat.
The shopkeeper gave him a skeptical look. â...Right. Just donât forget to pay next time.â
Miles barely made it a block before his disguise backfired.
âOi, rich boy!â A voice growled behind him.
Miles froze. He turned slowly to see a trio of scruffy-looking men, all eyeing him like a wolf eyes a lamb.
âIâm not rich,â he said quickly, holding up his hands. âIâmâuhâjust a humble traveler.â
The biggest of the three laughed. âYeah, with those fancy clothes and that shiny satchel? Nice try. Hand it over.â
Miles glanced at the satchel. To be fair, it did look expensive. He cursed the shopkeeperâs taste. âThis isnât real leather,â he blurted. âItâs fake. Cheap stuff. Totally worthless.â
The smallest thug stepped closer. âWeâll be the judges of that. Empty your pockets too.â
âWarning: Probability of being mugged is 98%. Suggestion: Roll for persuasion.â
Miles rolled and got a 3. He groaned. âYouâre supposed to be on my side, system!â
âThe dice decide your fate, not me. Good luck!â
âYeah, thanks for nothing,â Miles grumbled as the thugs closed in.
Milesâs mind raced. He needed a distraction, a way out, anything to avoid losing his stuffâor worse. Inspiration struck.
âWait!â he said, raising his voice. The thugs paused, surprised by his sudden outburst. âYou donât want to do this.â
âOh yeah? Why not?â the leader sneered.
Miles pointed dramatically at a random rooftop. âBecause heâs watching.â
The thugs exchanged confused glances. âWho?â
Miles grinned. âHyperion.â
The thugs visibly paled. âYouâre lying.â
âAm I?â Miles said, channeling every ounce of confidence he could muster. âWhy donât you stick around and find out? I hear heâs not a fan of thieves.â
âRolling for bluff effectivenessâ¦â
A pause.
âResult: 18. Moderate success.â
The thugs hesitated, clearly unnerved. âFine,â the leader muttered. âBut if youâre lyingââ
âIâm not,â Miles said quickly, backing away. âHave a nice day!â
As soon as the thugs were out of sight, Miles exhaled deeply and slumped against a wall. âThat was too close.â
âNote: Your bluff would have been more effective with a higher charisma stat.â
Miles rolled his eyes. âGee, thanks for the critique.â
Milesâs moment of relief was short-lived.
âWell, well,â a familiar voice drawled behind him. âSeems like youâve had an eventful morning.â
Miles turned slowly to see Hyperion leaning casually against a lamppost, his arms crossed and his infuriatingly smug smile firmly in place.
âYouâve got to be kidding me,â Miles muttered.
Hyperion tilted his head. âDid you really think you could outrun me?â
Miles sighed. âCanât a guy catch a break?â
âProbability of Hyperion capturing you: 99%. Suggestion: Stop resisting.â
âOh, now youâre on his side?â Miles said out loud.
Hyperion raised an eyebrow. âTalking to yourself now? You really are an interesting one.â
Miles groaned. This was going to be a long day.
Miles darted down another alley, feet pounding against the cobblestones, heart racing like a squirrel on caffeine. Behind him, Hyperionâs calm yet infuriating voice echoed through the city streets.
âYou know, youâre only making me more curious, little rabbit!â
âWarning: Probability of escape is 3%. Suggestion: Stop running.â
âNot now, system!â Miles hissed, rounding a corner. âIâm not going to just give up!â
âRolling for stamina⦠Result: 5. Youâre already wheezing like a broken kettle. Good luck with that.â
Miles doubled over, hands on his knees, gasping for air. âI hate you so much.â
âHate is a strong word. Perhaps focus on not being caught?â
Before Miles could retort, a shadow loomed over him. He looked up to find Hyperion, hands on his hips, staring down with an exasperated smile.
