Chapter 19: The Battle of Heavens
Val stood at the threshold, staring at the undead mass gathered beyond the gate. They didnât move. Dozens of them, shoulder to shoulder, silent, unblinking. The fog swirled between them, disturbed only by the shifting breeze.
She felt a chill run down her spine. Their stillness was unnatural.
Why had they stopped?
Why here?
Why were they faster now?
Was it the blight? Did it evolve? Strengthen them the longer they were infected?
Valâs mind spun with questions as she stood there dumbly.
Uneasily, Val turned away from the staring undead. To her left sat a small graveyard, the headstones weathered and cracked, some nearly overtaken by creeping ivy. They looked ancient, their names long eroded by time. Ahead, a narrow dirt path wound through the mist, leading toward a large stone structure barely visible in the distance, its silhouette shrouded by the fog.
Advancing slowly, Val glanced at her shoulder. The gunshot wound still burned, but the bleeding had slowed. Looking up, she spotted two stone pillars ahead, each crowned by a stone gargoyle perched in silent vigil. Between them stood a large wooden door, weathered but intact. The thick stone walls surrounding it were finally coming into full view.
An old castle, she thought. Of course.
To her right, Val noticed a massive crater carved into the earth, still smoldering from the recent bombing run. Smoke curled from the blackened soil, the scent of scorched stone and metal hanging in the air. At least now she knew, she was heading in the right direction. What had drawn the strike, she couldnât say for certain, but maybe the military had been tracking the source of the fog, triangulating its origin.
Val turned her gaze back toward the castleâand froze. One of the stone gargoyles was gone. The other, still perched atop its pillar, now seemed⦠different. Its head had turned slightly, eyes locked on her with an unnatural stillness. Its skin was the color of old stone, grey and mottled, but unnervingly lifelike. Muscles coiled beneath its surface, talons gripped the stone ledge, and massive wings lay draped over its back like a great cloak.
With a growing sense of anxiety, Val drew her pistol. As she did, a sharp lance of pain shot through her arm as the movement tugged at her wounded shoulder. Gritting her teeth, she slowly raised the weapon toward the gargoyle perched on the pillar. But before she could line up the shot, she felt itâlong, cold claws gripping her right shoulder, sinking deep into her flesh. She screamed in pain, then the ground fell away beneath her. The second gargoyle had her, and it was lifting her into the sky.

Shocked by the sudden burst of pain as the gargoyleâs claws ripped through her muscle, Val lost her grip on the pistol, and it tumbled from her hand, falling helplessly to the ground below. Gritting her teeth, she clawed at the beastâs talons with her free arm, but they were embedded like iron hooks. The creature was too strong. Her panic flared as it surged upward, wings beating powerfully, climbing higher into the fog-streaked sky. With no other choice, Val fumbled at her belt and drew her dagger. With a desperate cry, she drove the blade into the creatureâs calf. It roared in fury, the wound forcing its grip to falter. Val seized the moment, yanking herself off the talon, tearing flesh and muscle in the process, breaking free from its terrible grasp.

Still gripping the dagger with her uninjured arm, Val glanced downward as they continued to climb. Nothing below except the fog, no longer able to tell how high they were. Then, suddenly, light as the gargoyle broke through the veil of mist, revealing a surreal panorama: horizon to horizon, nothing but churning fog, glowing faintly in the afternoon sun. Val stared in stunned silence for a heartbeat, awestruck by the scale of it⦠until a talon sliced past her face, snapping her back to reality. It was trying to kick her loose she thoughtâone final drop to her death below.
Reacting on instinct, she swung herself around the creatureâs leg, using the embedded dagger as leverage. Like climbing a pole, she hauled herself upward, muscles screaming in protest, her injured arm nearly giving out. With a cry of pain and fury, she yanked the blade free and thrust it into the gargoyleâs back. The beast howled in pain, wings faltering, limbs flailing wildly as it reached behind itself, desperate to rip her loose.

Gripping the dagger with both hands, Val screamed into the wind, âTake us down!â She didnât know if the creature could hear herâmuch less understand herâbut she screamed again, voice ragged with desperation. âTake us down!â
As if in response, the gargoyle twisted violently in midair. The sudden spin sent her flying. The momentum tore the dagger from the beastâs back, and Val was flung weightless into open sky, tumbling through the air. For a moment, she lost all sense of up or down. Then, as she extended her arms to steady herself in freefall, something caught her eye in the corner of her vision.
The gargoyle, it was hurtling at her like a missile, wings tucked and eyes locked. It slammed into her midair with a bone-jarring impact, one claw clamping around her neck as they spiraled downward together at terrifying speed. Val gasped, the crushing pressure tightening around her throat. With her vision blurring at the edges, Valâs hand found the dagger still clenched in her grip. With a final burst of strength, she drove it upward, piercing the beast through the chin and out the top of its bulbous head.

Oh God, Val thought, panic rising as she realized the terrible truth, the gargoyle had been her only hope of surviving the fall. Now it drifted lifelessly away, spinning into the mist like a broken kite.
Frantically, she reached for her backpack, knowing it might be her only chance. The straps strained against her shoulders in the slipstream, and she fought to shrug it off without letting it fly away. Her fingers clawed at the zipper, fumbling in the cold rush of air. How long did she have left, she thought. Seconds?
She tore open the pack and reached inside, just managing to grab one of the helmâs wings before it was ripped from her grasp. With no time to think, she pulled it over her head and took a sharp, terrified breath.
Like a furnace igniting from the inside out, heat surged through her body. Her nerves screamed in protest, and just as the pain reached its crescendo, the world exploded in a crash of white-hot impact..
