There were no other sounds than my light wheezing, the ring of the heater, and whispers from the other side of the door.
It stayed that way for a while.
Without my consent, my eyes fixated on his house. My breath hitched and dampness fell selectively down my face like a spotlight on my insecurities. My head bonked my window pane and my knees hit the side of my day bed, causing me to fall over it.
"If you could just open the door, we could talk about it," his voice was so demure. It almost didn't sound like him.
Eventually, I just stopped hearing from him. Maybe he stopped talking, ditched again, or I subconsciously tuned him out. It's not like it really mattered anyway.
My mind was taking a trek through the great unknown. My heart was experiencing the darkness of broken light. My body was taking her time to heal. Identifying which of these three journeys was the most difficult was no small task.
The severest part was that I couldn't pick one and leave the other two to figure themselves out. I required all three. Every part of me had to work together to figure it out.
It was like a switch flipped and I was no longer in my room, but somewhere deep inside my mind. Truly, I can't recall how long I dwelled there in the same uncomfortable position.
All I knew was that I saw evening orange turn into night blue and night blue turn into a deeper almost black kind of blue before I realized I was locked inside the glass mirror. Once this realization came, a sledgehammer fell from the ceiling.
The tool was cold in my hands, but I knew exactly what I had to do. I forced myself to stand and swung the handle with all the strength I had.
I broke the glass.
It shattered all around me. But before I could crawl my way through the frame and touch base with my reflection, I was confronted with shattered pieces that lay before my feet.
How could I move toward a new life while I was still trapped by the shards of an old one?
Then, sharp edges started raining down on me as I was reveling in the pain. Something emerged behind me and pulled me back miles away from the frame of the mirror.
I landed with a thud and screamed out in pain. I was impaled by the glass. I could see a pool of blood encasing me. The pain was becoming unbearable and the fight felt like one I couldn't win.
But then, I heard them.
"Be safe out there, Little Miss."
"I'm your dad, I mean you know harm."
"Of course."
"You don't know everything that will happen in your life. Just try to be a little more open to what comes your way!"
"A terrible morning can be a start to the most perfect day, the outcome depends on you."
"I love you too, Day. You see me... the way no one else does. You mean the world to me."
"I'm here, there's no need to be afraid."
"Take every day one at a time and take every situation on a case-by-case basis."
"Today we can be weak, and then we will emerge stronger than ever."
All of these voices were reaching out to me and so many more. Words spoken before were filling my head and gave me the encouragement I needed to pull myself back up.
I took diminutive steps ahead. My feet were aching and covered in my own thick blood. I looked down and grasped a portion of glass in my hand and saw faces, Jayson, Liv, Dad, my new friend, Mom, Dennis, Michy, and almost every face I remember ever seeing in my life.
I covered them up with both my hands and squeezed. Blood covered my feet and my hands. A scream of hurt erupted from my chest as shards poked through my delicate palms.
My knees felt weak, but I knew that if I fell they would be grazed too.
I had to keep moving.
With all the strength I could muster, I threw the glass as far as I could and yelled incoherent words.
Through the glass-filled trail, my steps became faster until a run started. I could see the frame coming closer into my view, causing me to keep running, but brisker.
My body stopped aching and it almost felt freeing as I was being carried through the glass palace by my legs.
A smile spread across my face and my body suddenly stopped moving as I got just inches away from my destination. A blank expression drove my smile out of the way, replacing it wholly.
When I looked past the frame and into the authentic world, I saw me. I was sitting there, in the same place that I could last remember. Daybed, hand, and head hanging where glass should've been, and eyes unmoved staring at my lap.
Reaching out, I realized that I hadn't been running toward a broken mirror, but a broken window. The girl on the other side who I couldn't even recognize until I got this close, wasn't a reflection, but me.
With shaky fingers, I brought my hand closer to her face and the other me looked up in such a swift motion it startled me. I stumbled backward, and almost fell.
She stretched to grab my hand and only caught me by my index finger. The wind started picking up, I looked around and saw that behind me the ground was quickly cracking, and a twister was forming in the distance.
"You have to pull me in! Please!" The split in the ground was getting closer and closer to me. She just looked at me with the same wide green eyes that I shared.
Her grip on my finger strengthened as I grabbed her arm and pleaded for my life. "Save me! Please, you have to save us!"
The crack finally reached me, and I felt the ground beneath disappear. The full force of my weight was apparent as I was dangling over the abyss.
She had no intention of letting me go as we investigated each other's tear-plastered eyes. She threw her other hand down and I latched onto it. I knew she was trying to pull me in, but part of me knew she just wasn't strong enough.
We weren't strong enough.
My other hand was slipping down her arm and I was yelping. She was grunting to verbally display the energy she was using to haul me up.
By that point, the wind felt like a category four hurrican. Her body was halfway through the window. She inched closer to being in the same predicament as me, but worse because she had no hope. No one would be on the other side to save her.
"Daya, you have to let me go," I screamed up at her and she started shaking her head profusely.
"No, if you don't we'll both fall! One of us needs to keep living," I presented.
Her head kept shaking as if what I was saying was so amiss that it wasn't even worth considering. We were jolted down until only one of her legs was still inside the window.
Abruptly, her whole body was dragged out and she grabbed onto the frame.
I was screaming and trying to pry our hands apart, "Let me go, let me go!"
One by one, her fingers were being lifted from the frame. She looked back at me as I was still screaming, "The twister, it's on us!"
Our eyes connected, and I stopped yelling. It felt like the two of us were akin in this cloud of chaos. She had accepted her fate, our fate, and let the remaining two fingers on the frame free.
Out of nowhere a hand appeared and grabbed onto her.
Peering over to see who I had to thank for saving us, I saw that it was no other than...... me.
A third Daya came and was struggling against the window pane. But she also couldn't bear the weight, so another and another came to our rescue.
By the looks of it, a train of Daya's came to help until we were pulled back into my room.
As soon as my foot passed through the window all of us merged into one body. And then I awoke with new eyes.
