Chapter 10: Crossed Lines

SHATTERED Fears583 words~3 min read

The cold air of the wilderness was heavy around them, the weight of the unknown pressing down with every step. Ethan, still unconscious from his fight with the Fear of Darkness, was slung across Ava’s back. She was struggling to carry his weight, but there was no time to rest. They had to keep moving, away from the horrors that lurked behind them.

Jake, his senses heightened and on alert, led the way, his mind whirling with the idea that something wasn’t right. They had been watched for days, but by who? And why hadn’t the Fear monsters caught up to them sooner? Something in the back of his mind told him they weren’t alone. He didn’t know whether it was an enemy or an ally, but whoever it was, they were following them.

Then, without warning, the world seemed to shift. The monsters—those insidious creatures of fear—came charging through the trees, their eyes glowing with malice, their growls echoing through the still night air. There was no time to react. Jake drew his weapon, but they were surrounded.

Ava couldn’t do anything; her hands were tied with the unconscious Ethan on her back. Her heart pounded as she scanned the area, helpless. She wasn’t sure what to do. The monsters were closing in, and there was no way they could fight them off. The fear began to cloud her mind.

But then, just as it seemed like they would be overwhelmed, a figure appeared from the shadows.

It was a woman—a stranger, someone they had never seen before. She didn’t speak, didn’t hesitate. The figure moved with a terrifying speed, almost like she was one with the darkness itself. Before Jake could even process what was happening, she had already struck.

The woman’s power was unlike anything Jake had ever seen. With a terrifying scream, she tore into the monsters, her energy pulsing through the air, causing the beasts to howl in pain. The creatures recoiled, but the woman—this stranger—was relentless. She slashed and ripped through them as if they were nothing more than fragile paper.

Her movements were sharp and controlled, and yet there was an underlying desperation in the way she fought. Jake could see that this wasn’t just a fight to protect them. This woman was using everything she had to survive, to break through the fear that the monsters brought.

Then, without warning, she stopped. The woman staggered, as if the very air around her had grown heavier. She gripped her throat, as if in agony. The strain from the scream—the terrible, forceful scream that had torn through the air—had taken its toll on her. Her legs gave way, and she collapsed to the ground.

Jake was already at her side, crouching down beside her. He checked for a pulse, his mind racing with questions. Who was this woman? How had she done that? Why had she come to their aid?

In the moments that followed, as the last of the monsters fled into the woods, Jake’s attention remained fixed on the woman. She was barely conscious, her body limp as she lay on the cold ground.

She barely opened her eyes, but when she did, she met Jake’s gaze. Her voice was weak, barely a whisper.

“I am Mei,” she said, her words coming out strained.

Before Jake could say anything else, she fell unconscious in his arms.
