Chapter 13:The Quiet City

SHATTERED Fears1,045 words~6 min read

After two days of rest in the small hospital, the group was ready to leave. They had no solid plan, no map to guide them. They were just traveling forward, not sure of their destination. Their only goal: to keep moving, to survive. The city was behind them, and ahead of them lay nothing but open land, destruction, and uncertainty.

The hospital, though an isolated place, had served its purpose. It was a quiet place, with no fear monsters lurking near its boundaries. It wasn’t a city—just a small, makeshift facility meant to tend to the injured and sick. Still, it had given them a brief respite. But now, it was time to move on.

They walked through the remains of ruined cities and towns, the devastation all around them. Abandoned houses, wrecked cars, and desolate bunkers. There were no signs of life. It felt wrong, like the silence was too deep, too eerie. But at least the monsters they encountered were weak, and they could take them down with their basic weapons.

But after several days of aimless travel, something unexpected happened.

They stumbled upon a city. Not a large one, but it was intact. The buildings stood tall, unscathed by the destruction surrounding it. It seemed like an oasis in the middle of the wasteland, a stark contrast to everything they had encountered so far. They couldn’t help but wonder how it had survived when everything else had crumbled.

Jake’s instincts were sharp. His mind raced, sensing something off in the air. But he didn’t say anything just yet. They were too close to the gates now.

As they approached, two guards stepped forward, blocking their path. The guards were clearly Fearborn, just like them. The smaller one was young and short, while the taller one was muscular and imposing. They didn’t look like your average guard; there was something else in their eyes, a knowing that seemed hidden beneath the surface. But the group didn’t press the matter just yet.

The guards eyed them cautiously, and one spoke up. “What brings you here?” His voice was sharp, wary.

“We’re just looking for a safe place,” Jake answered smoothly, though the lie hung in the air. They weren’t here just for safety. They were looking for others like them—Fearborns. But they knew they had to play their cards carefully. They didn’t know who to trust in this strange city.

The guards seemed to accept their answer, though their eyes remained calculating. “Fine,” the larger one said. “You may enter, but we’ll be watching you.”

With that, they let the group pass through the gates.

As they entered the city, the darkness began to settle in. The streets were eerily quiet, and the once busy roads now felt deserted. It didn’t feel quite like a normal city. There was a weight in the air—like everyone was waiting for something. And just as they were about to question it, a shrill scream broke the silence. It was distant but unmistakable: Fearborns were coming.

The group froze, tension thickening in the air. It didn’t take long for Jake to realize that something was off. The Fearborns were coming in waves, much more coordinated than he was used to. The guards’ faces betrayed no fear, but Jake could feel something they weren’t showing—something he had to dig deeper to understand.

The guards remained calm, moving into positions, ready for the oncoming threat. Jake observed them closely, his mind churning. He knew this city wasn’t what it appeared to be. There were too many questions, too many things left unsaid.

“What’s going on?” Mei whispered, glancing nervously at the guards and then at Jake.

He shook his head. “I don’t know yet, but we need to be careful. Something doesn’t feel right.”

As they moved deeper into the city, their footsteps echoed in the silent streets. The sound of distant screams and the shuffle of Fearborns in the dark kept the group on edge. Mei stayed close to Jake, her mind racing with thoughts of her own. The fear monsters they had encountered earlier felt like nothing compared to what was ahead. They were about to face something much more dangerous.

As the hours passed, the group began to settle into a temporary safehouse within the city. The tension remained thick, but they needed rest. The day had been long, and though they didn’t fully trust the place they had found, it was the first haven they had in days. They spent the night together, talking, strategizing, and opening up about their pasts.

Ava, who had been quiet for much of the journey, spoke up. “I never thought I’d be in a place like this. I mean… after everything we’ve seen, to find a city that’s still standing? It feels like a miracle.”

Jake nodded, but his eyes stayed sharp. “It’s too quiet. Too controlled. There’s something wrong with this place.”

Ethan, still weak but recovering, chuckled softly. “You always have that paranoid look on your face, Jake. Maybe you’re just overthinking it.”

Jake didn’t smile. “Maybe. But I’m not taking any chances.”

Ava added, “We’ve been through a lot. We’ve lost so much already. If there’s even a chance this city can help us, we need to take it. But I agree with you, Jake. We should keep our guard up.”

They all nodded, knowing that staying alert was the only way to survive in this unpredictable world.

As the days passed, they grew closer, sharing stories of their pasts and dreams of what they’d do if the world ever returned to normal. It was strange to think about a future when the world they knew had shattered, but in the moments they shared, they found solace in each other’s company.

But Jake couldn’t shake the feeling that something was coming. The fear monsters in the distance were just the beginning. The quiet, controlled nature of the city made him suspicious. He knew the people here weren’t entirely who they seemed.

And as night fell, the sounds of screams growing louder, Jake felt the first stirrings of doubt. This city might not be as safe as they hoped. But they would find out soon enough.
